24/4/43
The south west pacific explodes again.
And I break the airforce completely[:(]
Russell island is full of tankers -fat targets.
CV wasp is running away -is he stil scared of KB?

rabual recieves its 1st air raid -the war is entering a new dark period, where I no longer have anywhere to hide.
47 b17s, 12 liberators attack - I have 28 tony and 32 oscar on CAP
Its a fiasco -the bombers blow through, 17 are damaged, but none lost
he gets 54 hits

then begins a very, very long turn of bombers attacking iether russell, or tulgia - where a full scale invasion is taking place
I lose 33 betties, and 30 odd helens, sallies, lillies and so on and so on.

all for 1 ak, and 1 lcm sunk
BAH!!!!!!
BB idaho led a charmed life.
We hit 1 tanker as well

Nevertheless, the attack will continue -all the Vals and kates available are moved to shortlands, and ordered to attack
tanaka -noting the thunderstorms -takes things into his own hands (well i hinted to him) and has sailed -now is the time to strike - if I could score a few tankers that would be the best way to slow him down

KB is coming
reinforcements still on high -so, ahh to heck with it - attack -we might get lucky!!!!

Time to strike

Post by 1275psi »

25/4/43
landings occuring at tulgia
A strike by my air force goes in -27 zero,23 val,9 sally, some lillies
17 corsairs,9 P40 and 24 p 38 intercept
This is the only way to counter the corsair -force him to CAP , or LRCAP for WITP every day -just have the threat there -and fatigue does the rest

I lost 10 zeros but the strike gets through
MM mexico takes 2 bombs - and is burning, she is not hurt too bad -but is burning, and if tanaka finds her....

More pathetic strikes dribble in, mostly the corsairs fail to stop them, but the inexperienced crews hit nothing

Tulgia falls, 1000 men lost
tanaka attacks tonight -and wobbly knows he is coming.

The imperial navy still fights well

Post by 1275psi »

26/4/43
The long awaited naval counter arrives, the CA's under tanaka attack

10 CA,2CL and 4dd encounter BB mexico, the CA shorpshire,CL helena and 3Dd and 2 dms

At 4000 yrds the mexico opens on the CA tahio, mexico wears a torp -yes!, she was still burning
The maya and Shorpshire hammer at each other
The Shorp hits the Kumano, she hits back

The surprise then happen, the little CL Oyoda picks out the Shorpshire, and smothers her in 6 inch hits, little CL yubri also

several other hits each way

7000 yrds
BB mexico takes another torp
takao takes a 14"
The battle rages, Shorpshire wears a torp its been inconclusive, shorpshire sinks! , and The mexico may be in big trouble

In the end as tanaka retires he runs into another group
BB Idaho and CL montpelier,3dd, and !dms

CL Montpelier is hammered by the CL yubri, and the Mikuma, and sinks as well

As tanaka retires, (hitting russell on the way out) we count the cost
takao -36/4/9
CL oyoda 33/0/6
dd yagure 26/2/10
ca kumano-33/23/19

All the others are still in great shape

he loses the CA shorpshire, CL montpilier, the BB mexico I believe is in big trouble, the idaho shrugged off the hits it recieved

More dribbles of airstrikes avoid the corsairs, nail a single ak

KB enters the bismark straight -her task, to get the BB mexico as she crwals home

RE: The imperial navy still fights well

Post by 1275psi »

alright
its the 27/4/43
Allied air should rule supreme, and the japanese navy should skulk about right

wrong
over the next 3 days this will recount how in UV you can do it......
It comes unstuck at the end, but I show that you can do it.
But for the weather this would have been perfect, yet for everything wobbly says this was the best co ordinated, and surprising attack he has ever been hit with
I was pretty pleased[:'(] too

27/4/43
a million ships down south at various places
Munda is being pounded by LBA
Some kates attack the IDaho at russel -but miss -very dissapointed, these were crack pilots saved for over a year for this 1 shot.
grrrrr

Wobbly has sighted tanaka -he's coming again, directly south, just near shortlands.
Wobbly will react -and tells me he's awaiting -russell will be full of ships
to the east 2 cve's begin charging in towards lunga -they set all planes on strike -they have no hope of surviving -but that is not the plan, I want the entire wieght of his LBA to hit them.

KB charges south, now at woodlark

We attack!!!!

28/4/43
all 3 task forces are spotted, and he gets ready, we approach.
a 4th group of 2cs and a BB are not spotted ahead of KB, .
no attacks, but the die is set. tanaka is given his target, not russell, not lunga, but irau!, where dozens of fat tankers lay.

29/4/43
zeros, oscars sweep irau, big battles
The hosho is attacked by mitchells -miss
Buggar - tanaka is 2 hexes short of Irau
and air from nevea strikes it
2ca's aoba and atago are hurt, as is a dd

hosho's strike penetrates the CAP at Irau -and fails to hit anything -this is so cruel, the zeros prevent any bomber losses, all for nothing

but the lure of the cves works guys, every other plane in the area, from russel, from lunga, attack the cves, not the tanaka CAs

the cves get hammered, chuyo sinking

But tanaka is still in good shape

the plan is given -tanaka to charge on, and KB will be right beside her at Irau, it will be the centre of the action, allowing him to escape -and she will cause chaos -we hope.

and a bb is ordered to hit russel, now that he is busy down south.

30/4/43
chuyno sinks
hyga encounters pts, wears a torp[:@][:@][:@], sinks them in disgust
then sinks 5 landing craft at russel, hits the base, and departs

The lba attacks hosho aagin, and again, and then 2 CAs attempting to leave, aoba and hagura are doomed

tanaka battles at irau, encounters BB idaho, cl helena,7dd
its a bust, both sides take considerable damage, but no long lance attack -actually do not think I got one this game

tanaka cripples need to get home -kb will be right between irau and rennell island at dawn
I continue to attack

1/5/43

This game is one year old -fancy that, and we have been playing 9 months or more real life (i think)
swarms of zeros, oscars sweep irau, its not pretty, as the corsairs reap a terrible harvest

And KB is right there -clouded in[:@][:@][:@][:(][:@][X(][:@][:o]
(thats me pulling hair out)
so but for that, the plan was OK
worse, KB decided to refuel, buggar, tomorrow she wears the big stick i think

the cripples are crawling away, it costs 2 ca,aoba, haguro

Overall the great offensive ends in failure, but it was so close
for WITP, you can operate in enemy air zones -its a matter of presenting "better targets"
gamey -but if Id got the tankers -again-, this would have been a great way to slow him down
I dread now the next turn, what is going to become of KB

1 year on, and this game still rocks
Thanks matrix!!!![&o][&o][&o][&o][&o][&o][&o]

This a two day post -or is it 3?[:'(]

Well typically after such massive battles, nothing is happening -zip, narda, none.
No air actions, not a sound.

All my cripples crawl home, wobbly tells me he is trying to rebuild his airgroups, and KB swings back towards lae, and then home -or the admiralties.
More ships tomorrow, and then we try, yet again.

The airforce is finished basically now though.

nothing happened -again

KB, is near GG, and headed back to the admiralties

I lead by exactly 90 points

WHHHOOOOO HOOOOOO[8|]

I get some more battle wagons to play with and break tomorrow

I love battle wagons[:'(]
wobbly must hate his, the way they perform[8D]

Slackos

Post by 1275psi »

feel a bit slack, only 1 turn of UV this weekend.

Its the 6/5/43

Lots of thunderstorms again -so a wobbly surface task force should be in the offering tomorrow -if he runs true to form

KB is swanning about south of rabual -waiting
Started to send poor old Tanaka's CA's home, 3 today, but tanaka gets some new toys, BB Kongo -a favourite of mine, 3CA ,1 cl and 7 Dd head south

Losses so far, after the carnage -(and this only confirmed losses

him
2CV
2CVE
2BB
13 CA/CAA/CL

A lot o destroyers

Me
1 cvl
1cve
2BB
4AV
4CA
11CL
Even more destroyers

yet for a game deep into 43, this is pretty light - but seems fairly historical.
KB still influences wobbly tactics - but I fear for not much longer.

I may do the old send it home again trick.

Thuderstorms, and still little action.

I have spotted a BB parked at tulgia -a cripple perhaps?
If so -Ill have a go

every bettie I have is put to night port attack tulgia, just 1 hit is all i need.

Kb is at rabual, sucks the place dry, 3 days and we head south again -its the last effort, for WITP training ? exercise, I need to know how KB will perform in mid 43.

So here goes, next bad weather spell, and we charge south!

8/5/43

I think its nearly time to commit the KB
last night 37 betties night bombed tulgia -but no ships there anymore
lost another sub, they can achieve nothing now

Wobbly bombs PM, keeps on reconning shortlands

The plan is simple -the surface ships and KB will meet at kavieng tomorrow, fuel, and simply sail south, and give battle.
KB survivors will then go home, leaving planes behind.

desperate, and one hates to lose KB, but its time I think.

Here we go!

Post by 1275psi »

the dreaded corsairs sweep over shortlands -48 planes twice

The brave targets -whoops i mean pilots - rise to meet them.
I lost 11 zero, 14 oscar and 6 tonies, he lost 1(but an ace)

replacements are still on high, KB and the BB will escort 2CS full of supplies to Lunga -come hell or high water.

The troops at lunga must be given hope!!!

KB

Post by 1275psi »

hello new recruit[:D]

KB is Kido baru - the fist of my fleet - the japanese carriers, and she is the only thing stopping wobbly killing me quick

Ive been at sea for a week, but we are back into it now.
date is now 11/5/43, several very quiet turns have passed, but now the weather turns very bad.

goodie

BB Kongo and escorts passes shortland island -looking fo nothing but trouble - she is attacked by the only open airbase on the map- russell
17 dive bombers attack, Flak claws 5 out of the sky - and NO HITS!
Whoo Hoo - russel will be hit tonight

2cs, and 1 dd will use the chaos to slip supplies into Lunga
And the carriers hurry south -also looking for trouble

All 3 TFs were sighted, or attacked -lets see what wobblies reply will be!

BB kongo and CA chokia hit mines while pounding Russell

No planes caught on the ground
The two CS deliver a nice dump of supplies -Lunga remains in hope!
And everyone gets away!

Kongo will have to go home -thats OK -little use for BBs now, a good chance I will get more CVs soon
KB covers her withdrawal.
High command is pleased -wobbly even acknowledges a good turn.
In 22 days 6 new regiments arrive- shortlands bound I guess.

To top up a good day, over 100000 tons of supplies have been delivered all over PNG, and new britian.

This game has a long way to go!

Allies take the lead

Post by 1275psi »

14/5/43
allies take the lead by 1 point

I have decided KB will turn about just south of Rabual, and have another go...

15/5/43
KB, the little CS tF and the Aos all gather all just south of rabual -they will creep south, looking for an opportunity
Wobbly has buckets of ships at russel island, a couple of days ago, washington and North carolina hit a mine, but still reports of enemy BBs everywhere
Kongo goes home, so I have none left in theatre.

The heavy bombers surprise me at Lae - destroying 20 A/C on the ground
Corsairs sweep shortlands -1 zero lost

he must be almost ready for another go - time is ticking if he wants to isolate and destroy rabual

And things move right along[:'(]

Wobbly hits Lae -21 zeros CAP, 31 LBA, more planes damaged on the ground, but I wonder how expensive that was

87 Mitchell hit Munda
More craters on the craters

Tomorrow thunderstorms -and KB has full tanks....

17/5/43
Thunderstorms
KB spotted deep in the solomon sea
Lots and lots of ships in the russel island -we attack!!!
Some BBs there as well
The plan
The CS will run for lunga
The 3 CA will attack russell
KB will stay exactly where she is and fight!

18/5/43
A big day
More thunderstorms

Chokia, Kingasu and kako, sendai and 5 dd attack russell island
Ca helena and denver oppose, plus 9dd
Something nasty reacts south -but never shows

The surface battle is inconclusive -I lose a dd, he does too

Then russell air strikes -22 DB and 12 corsairs and 2 Wildcats attack the CS
No hits![:'(]
another wave -45 corsairs,22 DB, 20 wildcats - 1 hit on chitose

KB is clouded in
I decide to stay and fight, let the enemy come!
Fighters to 30% CAP
The CS will be decoys
Lots of LBA moves to woodlark
tomorrow will be big!!!!

The climatic battle

Post by 1275psi »

19/5/43

3 DB, escorted by 54 corsair attack KB
met by 16am2, 13 am3, 9 zeke

I lose 9 zeros, he 2 corsair, 1 db
CVL Ryujo -miss

We attack shipping at russel -a very long range strike
55 zeros, 49 kate, 101 val, 23 judy
17 corsair and 27 w/c oppose

i lose 15 zeros, destroy 8 wildcats and 1 corsair, the bombers get through

But the experience levels show
CA portland 3 hits, CL santa fe 2 hits, 5 DD hit by a bomb each

The LBA attacks -betties and zeros from rabual -no hits

A second KB strike goes in (his is unable to find target)
CA portland 4 bombs, santa fe 2 more, 2 dd hit again

But the cost!
37am2
11am3
31val
5judy
12 kate
10 betty

Him 10wildcats
7 corsairs
2 db

I now run away -KB has shot its last bolt, I steam at full speed towards Lea.

RE: The climatic battle - KB burns

Post by 1275psi »

20/5/43
21 bettie night attack russell -no hits
The enemy appears, just south of Munda -his CVs

I had sent the CAs back -they are terribly close, but there sacrifice might save KB -which reacts 1 hex, it is right at woodlark

here it comes!!!!
33DB, 16 Avengers, 15 wildcats -only 23 zeros /zekes on CAP, yesterday has emptied my locker!
How the attack went:
5 DB shot down
The attack begins
CV Hiyo -miss,miss, miss, miss
CV Hiyo -Torpedoed
CV Soryu -miss,miss, miss,miss
CVL Zuiho -Torpedoed
CVL Ryujo -miss, miss, miss
CV Akagi -miss

Zuiho seems ok -no smoke!

2nd wave
5 w/c, 32 db, 10 Avengers
The cap kills nothing

CL agano -miss, miss,miss,miss
CV Hiryu-miss,miss,miss
CA chikuma -miss
CVL Ryuho- hit -A dud! - miss
CV Hiyo -miss,miss,miss,miss
CVL Ryujo -miss
CVl Ryuho -miss
CV kaga -miss, miss, miss, HIT!

3rd wave
18 wildcat,17db,18 avenger
Cap is very weak now

CV Akagi -miss,miss,miss,miss
CV Hiryu -TORP -critical hit!
CV Akagi -miss,miss,miss,miss
CVL Zuiho -Torp!
CV Akagi -Miss

My strike goes in -how pale to our former glory
His CAP is massive, and not a single plane even sees the enemy, a genuine turkey shoot

Then the CAs save the day
75DB, 42 avengers attack them - the 3 CAs and 1 dd are smothered in hits, they will sink

We split KB
Hiryu -46/27/12
Hiyo -23/17/19
Zuiho-42/15/19
may get away yet!!!!
The carriers flee
I unload every plane and put them iether at woodlark, munda or gassmatta -the very last throw of the dice
Have 10 AOs and tankers at woodlark
These may save KB -they steam full speed towards the enemy!!!, standing between KB and the enemy CVs
Who knows
If I can get KB out -she will now definately leave the map
He has 4cv,1cvl at least in his TF

So mid 43, and KB is finally brocken
GULP!!!!

Very similar to my PBEM game as IJN, managed to keep most of the KB alive until mid 43 but then they were swamped by my US opponent (Jeffs)....my resignation was graciously accepted! (Almost no land units left to defend the beaches)
