Pac Fleet HQ, Pearl Harbor Hawaii
Ryan, Nimitz and Marky are looking at the map, adding what has been lost

Ryan: And that about sums it up sirs.

Nimitz: Hmm, theyre moving faster than we thought

Marky: Indeed. We need to accelerate those convoys.

Ryan: Yes sir the Lexington and Enterprise will arrive within 48 hours.

Marky: What if we abandon Canton?

Ryan: I wouldnt suggest abandoning anything sir, or the enemy will move right in

Marky: Hmm indeed, but we dont neccessarily have the resources to defend everything Commander

Ryan: No sir, but we must defend the lines to Australia, and Australia itself

Marky: You think the japs will contemplate an invasion of Australia?

Ryan: *sigh* Its possible sir, but itd be a hell of a job to do, and theyd need alot of troops and ships and material and aircraft, and certainly all their carriers to support it, itd be a big gamble.

Nimitz: I thought Washington and Marshall didnt think the japs would even try that

Marky: Yes they did say so, but i dont know, theyre pretty strong right now and look how far theyve advanced

Ryan: Yes sir

Marky: They could always just cut Australia off and leave em be

Ryan: Yes sir they could

Marky: We gotta look at the big picture here boys. What is the singular thing that would hurt us most? Aside from losing Pearl?

Nimitz: Hmm. Well theres alot of things they could do to hurt us bad.

Marky: True, but we ghave to try to put ourselves in their minds. The last time i knew the japs were ardent believer of Mahans theories, and supporters of the "decisive battle"

Ryan: Yes sir

marky: So its possible that the japs will go after something so valuable that we HAVE to fight for it, thereby luring us into battle with all those carriers they got in their fleet.

Ryan: Yes sir

Nimitz: Agreed, that makes sense

Marky: So gentleman, what will they decide to go after IF they decide to go the route of the decisive battle? Lets assume for the moment theyll want to knock our fleet out and sink our carriers. What will they do?

Nimitz: They may go after the South Pacific, to try and lure us out, since theres not many good airfields in that area they wont have to worry so much about land based air

Ryan: I agree with that sirs.

Marky: Do you think theyll eventually go after Hawaii?

Ryan: Im not sure sir, its a possibility, but recon and our subs have spotted alot of enemy shipping around the Marshalls and Truk

Marky: So first theyre going for the Solomons and Rabaul?

Ryan: Possibly sir, we just, we need more intel

Marky: all right then, lets get some more subs out there to spot and get these convoys movin faster

Nimitz: Aye aye sir

Ryan: Aye aye sir

Marky: ALl right bouys lets get back to work....

I will tell you this about his play: he is a careful player and supports naval advances with LBA very well. In land combat he doesn't rush in, he sits back, builds planning levels and rolls forward. He does have a tendency to grow bored and do something not well thought out - that is your opportunity against him. More details would give away too much of what you have to face, but he is a good opponent, and very regular with his turns. He does tend to spout Jap phrases at you in e-mails that I have no idea what they mean, so I reply with Suzukisushinissanhonda or something of the sort. I will be following your AAR closely to see how you handle him.

I have a question though: tell me about your strafing with your fighters, is your morale suffering? The attacks don't seem too effective from where I am sitting. What are your thoughts on this?

hmm, thankys [:)]

my experience with the strafing is they get experience from it, plus it causes attrition, and eventually they start following the bullets up with bombs

its mainly an annoyance thing but it does casuse some damage

Yes ive pretty much handed Luzon and Malaya to DB.

But im trying to fall back on Manila and Singapore and turn it into a slug match

ive replaed Percival and Macarthur with Downing and Short

and im builing up more forts

my hope is that this "easy victory" will help to lul DB into a fall sense of security, and maybe infect him with victory disease

he must know im an inexperienced opponent concerning long scenarios, and i intend on using that to my advantage

i want him to get cocky

then...

A Fabian strategy. Sort of a scorched earth strategy in the water of the Pacific. Marky, just don't forget to read the automatic victory conditions.

Oh, and Marky, Baker isn't such a direct threat to your Aussie bound convoys.  Canton Island's fall is.  Neither cas be held if Mr. KB and the Japanese really want them at this point, but, Canton is doable if you acted quickly at th ebeginning of the game to get INF reinforcements to it.

Good luck in your game.  Your strategy is interesting and, in my view, realistic.  I'm sure you'll choose your fights carefully.

PacFleet HQ Pearl Harbor Hawaii

All is calm as Adms Marky and Nimitz are looking over the grand map, as Commander Ryan walks in...

Marky: Commander, any news for us?

Ryan: Yes sir, we know the location of the enemy carriers

Marky: What? where?

Ryan: near Rabaul sir. It looks like theres at least 3 or 4, possibly more judging by the estimate of the number of Vals that attacked

Marky: How many?

Ryan: Almost a hundred sir, possibly more

Nimitz: That sounds like Kido Butai to me

Marky: Indeed

Nimitz: What about all those convoys down there?

Ryan: Well sir, we know that there was a jap sub near Canton, and they may know were reinforcing the base

Marky: But they may not know all the carriers are at Pearl, they may not know at all where they are

Ryan: Yes sir

Nimitz: You thinkin of droppin in on em?

Marky: Possibly, but wed still be outnumbered, outgunned. *sigh* How many carriers do we have available?

Nimitz: 3. Enterprise, Lexington and Saratoga. Yorktown is on her way to San Francisco, but she might not make it here in time.

Marky: Well then lets tread lightly, and carry a large carrier task force...
