And everything which would let his Mikes be within range of Rangoon is now mine again. This is good as I really want to make this a Zero vs ALL Allied fighter planes in India contest. My reason is that if he makes 200 Zeroes and 200 Mikes a month it is obviously MUCH better to just try to kill 200 Zeroes than to kill 200 Zeroes PLUS 200 Mikes ( especially as the Mike outclasses everything I have except the MiG-3 and P-40E/Spits ).

Hmm, I wonder why the Japanese are conducting this assault. The only thing which makes sense is that he is planning to use this as a base for deeper paraborne assaults into the strategic depth of Siberia. Obviously this is being done to prevent me from basing bombers deep in the hinterland but I've taken steps to protect the bases which I must hold.

And below you can see the rather large number of divisions which are going to be freed up from the Phillipines by mid-February.

I think Jagdfluger will go for India and Oz rather than spreading his resources too widely by investing heavily in strategic bombers. He seem to have reached the conclusion that I invested too heavily in bombers in my game as Japan vs him. Since this mod contains the Ki-48 II ( which is armoured ) he may just be going for a Ki-48 II and Ki-49 bomber mix with a few Me-264s to give him a limited strategic capability.
Those planes can be set to recon/naval search, right? How effective are they at spotting TFs at max range? That's how I would use these planes, plus a long range strike every now and then to keep you on your toes.

He's losing only 2% of his bombers per sortie. I have found that in-game the magic percentage within which Japan can train 30 Exp trainees up to 90 Exp experten whilst reserving all fully trained pilots for fighter daitai is a 3% loss rate. So, what we are looking at is an acceptable loss rate which is going to result in 90 Exp bomber pilots by the time the invasion of India comes around.

I'm going to let this continue for a while but I think that once my Spitfire force is back up to full strength ( 48 Spits ) that I may mount an ambush.

In another ten days I'll have enough Pe-2s to re-equip a Shturmovik unit and that'll give me 70 Pe-2s. Since these guys carry 2 x 500Kg AP bombs and can fly higher than the A6M2 CAP that KB can generate I am expecting them to get hits.

Basically I am doing everything I can can to convince Jagdfluger to land in Sri Lanka/ Madras with a view to establishing a defence on the following basis in Colombo, Trincomalee and Madras:
1. Level 9 forts ( x 3 defensive bonus )
2. Either wooded or urban terrain ( 3 to 4 x defensive bonus ).
3. 500 AV minimum per base. ( This should result in an adjusted AV of 4,500 --- although experience levels will reduce this to something around 3,000 which is equivalent to 10 IJA divisions--- about half of the total force he can bring in and probably about 3/4 of what he can bring in in his first lift. )
4. Large numbers of fighters on CAP over these bases with a view to butchering Japanese escorting fighters when they accompany their strike planes.
5. Truly excessive levels of AAA units in each of these bases.
6. I want three Pe-2 units ( currently am just creating my 2nd and it'll be a month before I have the third ) which will give me a solid throw weight of 100 Pe-2s which I can send in in unescorted strikes.

Over the course of a couple of days I expect that these strikes will result in fatigued Japanese CAP, some damage to some of his CVs and serious losses to his strike units. At that point in time I'll bring in all my long-range level bombers from bases far in the rear ( unescorted ) while throwing in escorts en masse to mob the CAP and let large numbers of my own short-range dive-bombers ( IL-2s etc ), torpedo bombers ( B-26s, Albacores, IL-4s, Swordfish) and medium range level bombers.

I really doubt I have six weeks BUT if I do I'll have a horde of US naval air present also and my chances of holding will increase exponentially. Its a solid defensive plan. The only problem is that Jagdfluger just has so much he can throw at me that even a solid defensive plan mightn't be enough.

Well in terms of the strategic situation I have to say that it is MUCH easier to say what he hasn't invaded yet than to say what he does hold.

1. Northern Java is still mine, for now. It will fall very soon though.

2. I still hold Manilla but it is bound to fall within the week.

3. I've repulsed the first invasion of Port Moresby but the next invasion will succeed for sure. This is purely a cheap delaying action.

4. I hold Noumea, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. I am currently in the process of evacuating Fiji though. No need to lose a Brigade to no purpose.

5. I hold CONUSA and most of Alaska - the Japanese have, however, taken Nome.

6. I hold all of Burma worth holding and India.

7. I have a good defensive line set up in China and soon enough I'll be able to meet my supply needs in China out of local resources as I have been pulling troops out at a pretty rapid clip while being able to do more with the forces as I have left as I've anchored my defences on chokepoints, natural terrain and better supply lines.

So, overall he's done well and he has extended his Empire just as is to be expected with this mod. Obviously though India and Australia will be tougher propositions as those are two locations I'll fight for - albeit India will be much tougher than Australia will ever be.

Here's the points screen. We're not playing for points wins etc but still it gives some idea of how things are going....

Well as you can see I've lost 3,215 planes to Jagdfluger's 2,069. Both sides aerial losses are extremely high for this date BUT only 1,500 of mine have been A2A, FlAK or operational losses--- the types of losses which carry the potential for pilot losses.

Japan on the other hand has lost 2,020 planes to A2A, FlAK and operational losses with the potential for significant pilot losses. He can, at best, have replaced 1,500 of these pilot losses by combining two months of new pilot production with the 900 pilots in the beginning pool. So, when the time for the invasion of India comes I am hoping the pilot pools won't be able to withstand serious attritional losses. Well, the IJA pools will be able to but the IJN pilot pools should have been very, very badly hurt.

The Allies have lost 2 CVs, 9 BBs, 1 BC, 8 CAs, 19 CLs, 54 DDs, 83 SS ( of which 71 were sunk while still docked--- most of these were sunk on 7th December actually ) in terms of military shipping. Almost all of those CAs and CLs will respawn. The CVs and the rest won't.

Japanese losses are 3 BBs, 1 CA, 4 CLs, 12 DDs, 3 DEs, 2 APDs, 30 APs ( this is important as I've really tried to go after APs in the DEI area in order to hurt his ability to lift troops for the invasion of India ), 40 AKs, 5 Tankers, 3 SS, 4 ML, 1 DM.

So, overall I'm pretty happy as the Japanese bombardment-capable shipping ( BBs and CAs ) has been pretty badly damaged ( BBs sunk, CAs damaged ) in the run-up to the invasion of India. In addition about 90 Japanese ships are currently tied up in Hawaiian ports following torpedo and mine damage.

And now for some really good news... the aerial losses.

Obviously I've lost a lot of planes ( 341 F4F-3s, 281 P-40s, 241 IL-2s ( almost all destroyed on the ground during transfer from the Soviet Union), I-16 Type 24s ( same story ) but Japanese losses have also been massive.

They have lost 313 A6M2s, 250 B5N2s, 198 D3As, 140 B4Y1s, 101 G4Ms and 79 G3Ms. That's a total of over 1,000 naval airplanes destroyed in the air with their pilots. Since the Japanese have, at best, received 432 replacement pilots and began the game with another 432 this means that just counting these 6 plane types they've already exceeded their ability to replace those pilot losses - and since they need the IJN to cover the invasion of India the fact that the IJN is pretty much out of pilots is very helpful indeed.

Let's look at production; Japan is currently producing the following per month:
A6M2s 215
A6M2Ns 136 ( too many IMO )
Ki-43 73
Me-109 180

G4M 75
Ki-21 46
Me-264 20

D3A 60
B5N2 73

L2D2 - 45
G5N - 38
L3Y - 61

C3N - 23
Ki-46 - 14
H6K4 - 25
H6K2L - 20
H8K - 14

So, basically, since the start of the war about 300 Zeroes will have been produced, just enough to replace losses, but insufficient Kates and Vals have been produced to replace losses. In addition, as you can see, the Ki-21, Ki-48 and Ki-32 losses simply are nowhere near being replaced by the 46 Ki-21 Sallys being produced per month.

So, little emphasis on bombers, lots of emphasis on fighters and transport planes. Its an interesting strategem and with enough Zeroes I think it could work.

[X(][X(][X(] ... + 30 000 points for the Japanese!!! Talk about blitzkrieg start.

By looking at the overview map. Are you going to cut his troops in 1/2... It seems that is has expanded way down South? ... I mean he cannot defend CenPac and North Pacific that strongly. (If he does you are going pick up easy points one after another when time is right)

I do agree that the aircraft losses don't look that bad. I would assume that you do have plenty of capable fighters waiting for the right moment to bounce back?

I could have sworn the entire Pearl Harbor battleline had been wiped out. With Prince of Wales and Repulse that would make 10 BBs, or 9 BBs and a BC.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock, you are right. Thanks for catching that typo.

Aztez, aye I have about 1400 fighters in total. I have only about 800 to 900 available in India but they should be enough to wear down the Zeroes and I do have HORDES of B-17s, B-25s, A-20s, B-26s and SB-2Ms also there. I really think I have a good chance of cutting Japanese invasion convoys to pieces IF they stray out from under Zero CAP --- and I have what I think is a good plan for forcing butchering Japanese carrier-based strike forces in the initial phase of operations.

In terms of my plan... Basically it involves keeping a bit of western Oz in action ( he will definitely invade it, the only question is whether he will invade it before India or after India) and then just disembowelling him by landing hordes of UK, US and Chinese troops in Java and cutting him off from his essential supplies before marching eastward across Borneo and the Phillipines. Ideally if I could thrust north-westward through the Pacific ( starting off near Ponape and cutting up behind Hawaii ) I would like to be able to have my forces meet up around the Phillipines cutting his Empire in half but I don't know how viable that will be.

Ok time to go into India in a bit more detail... This situation is still developing and, obviously, in a month's time I'm looking to have India be a lot stronger than it is right now but, still, I think it is coming along nicely. I'm actually quite looking forward to matching my preparations against Jagdfluger. Obviously if he comes in two months time that'd be even better but I'll take what I can get [:D]

So, in terms of AV etc here's the situation:

Sri Lanka: 995 AV ( and increasing as depleted units gather strength in Colombo ), 168 Engineer squads and 10 Engineer Vehicles. There is Aviation Support for 409 planes and 173 FlAK guns are already in place ( I am hoping to lure him into the area around Sri Lanka and Madras and use the FlAK at these three bases to cripple his carrier-based strike aircraft). I currently have 30 Engineer squads, 20 engineer vehicles in the 811th Engineer Aviation Battalion, an additional 270 Aviation Support ( thus giving both Colombo and Trincomalee RAF HQs to help their planes fly ), an additional 78 FlAK guns in 3 AAA Regiments and an additional 76,000 tons of supply - bringing supply on the island to roughly 140,000 tons.

So, as you can see, Sri Lanka is one big FlAK, CAP and troop trap. Sure he can take any base he wants BUT if he wants any of my bases on Sri Lanka he is going to have to land 3,000+ AV ( I can put 500 AV in x 3 for mountainous terrain and x 2 for Level 5 forts ( currently increasing to Level 9 ) = an adjusted AV of 3,000 AV ) and mount some hellacious shock attacks - hopefully wrecking these divisions for future use on the mainland.

On the mainland I dispose 3,650 AV outside of Karachi - principally in Madras and Calcutta - as well as 180 AV of 9 very badly beaten up Brigades I managed to evacuate from Malaysia and Burma... most of these Brigades are at no better than 25% so they have been ordered to Karachi where the HQs and supplies will help them replenish their depleted ranks.

So, right now India has 4,800 AV digging in and preparing to meet the assault. Most of this force is concentrated in Sri Lanka, Madras and Calcutta but there's enough in Pangim, Bombay and Karachi to meet any end-runs.

What's on the way. Well, in the long run 3 US Divisions from CONUSA are on their way but I doubt they will make it in time so, instead, another 2 divisions of Australians are currently loaded onto ships and heading north. They will arrive by the end of the month and should make it in time for the invasion.

In addition I've had another look around China and decided that I REALLY don't need to keep far more troops in China than I can supply. I've decided to shorten my lines by dint of a few unexpected strategic withdrawals over the next month and free up another 4,000 AV which I can send to India and Burma for rebuilding and strengthening my lines there.

I have 800 AV in Burma and am holding two landing points. I'd like to divert 1200 AV to Burma to aid in holding these two landing points ( 1,000 AV + Level 9 forts + 100% preparation + urban or mountainous terrain ought to result in adjusted AVs of 18,000 AV. Assuming I only even manage 1/3rd of this I think Burma will be pretty safe from anything but a full-scale invasion.

The remaining 2,800 AV will be flown in or march into India and should, with the arrival of further Australian forces and additional UK and US troops via Aden result in an AV of some 9,000 by mid-April. I am confident that that should be able to keep India safe and if I can also hold Burma I will have created quite a launching pad for some late-1942 bomber and ground offensives.

What's the situation in terms of airplanes:
Well, a quick count reveals some 2,200 airplanes basing out of India. Some are of atrocious quality, most can do a reasonable job but only a tiny minority can actually stand and fight against Zeroes. Here's how things actually break down:

I-16 Type 24: 203
I-16 Type 4: 84
Buffalo: 121
Brewster: 33
Yak-1: 32
Wirraway: 16
Martllett: 18
P-43: 36
P-39D: 24
LaGG-3: 38

Spitfire: 33
Hurricane: 96
Seafire: 12
SeaHurricane: 9
MiG-3: 32
P-40E: 48
P-40B: 13

So, out of my 837 fighters only about 260 can actually go in any way toe to toe with Zeroes. The rest are, however, useful in defending my rear area bases and absorbing fighter passes during defensive missions.

Dive-bombers:
Il-2 Shturmoviks: 144
Pe-2s: 56 ( these are planes I am REALLY banking on as in a couple of weeks they should have 80 Exp and can fly higher than Zero CAP).

So that's 210 dive-bombers.

Torpedo-bombers: These are, of course, the real ship-killers in any anti-naval defensive plan so it helps if there are a lot of them.
Albacores: 63
Beauforts: 39
B-26: 112
Swordfish: 32
Vildebeest: 42

So that's 286 torpedo-bombers which is a really nice number to be able to throw at the enemy fleet.

Level bombers:
B-18: 12
V-92C: 36 ( they're pretty useless but they'll absorb fighter passes and save more capable bombers )
Martin 139: 28
SB-2: 48
SB-2M: 165
A-20: 88
IL-4: 24
Blenheim IV: 127
Blenheim I: 7
B-25: 88
B-17 63

So, while there are 686 level bombers only about 151 are long-range four-engined level bombers I'd be comfortable sending in against Zeroes. Still, if he does take a base those 151 very long-range bombers, when combined with the A-20s, Blenheims and SB-2Ms should really help close the base down ASAP and keep it closed so enemy Zeroes can't be flown in.

In addition there are 73 reconnaissance planes, 118 seaplanes.

So, overall, its coming together nicely. It won't stop an invasion convoy which is serious about landing a dozen divisions in the first wave and is escorted by a significant portion of the enemy carrier and surface fleet BUT it will hurt it and give the Royal Navy a chance to sell itself dearly when it attacks the invasion beaches ( I currently have 3 combat-ready BBs, 4 CAs, 5 CLs and approximately 9 combat-capable DDs.... at least as many CLs and DDs are being repaired but won't be ready for another month... Still, that force ought to be sufficient to cause a lot of damaged, destroyed enemy BBs, CAs and CLs/DDs and lessen the target-richness of the environment sufficiently that my bombers really begin concentrating on the enemy carrier fleet.).

If I can limit what he lands in the first wave to a manageable force but ensure that sufficient is landed that reinforcing it makes more sense than abandoning it then I think I like my chances if it comes to a race between my reserves moving overland and his reserves having to move across contested seas with ever-weaker escort elements.

In the meantime I have 2 to 3 divisions becoming available for offensive action. I'm trying to choose between sending them south to Ponape ( where I can base PBYs to give my convoys to Oz warning of enemy CV forays into these oceans ) or sending them north into the Aleutians where I could threaten to enact a Northern Strategy in which Japanese CV supremacy would be less of a factor. Right now I'm leaning towards the northern option as the spectre of two completely cut off divisions sitting on Ponape waiting to be destroyed with no chance of relief rather fills me with dread. At least in the north I will be able to fly large portions of the force out and fly supplies in should the sea routes be completely interdicted. It would also allow me to bring my numerous P-40 and P-39 squadrons in CONUSA into the fight and help them attrit enemy forces at negligible strategic cost.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

I'm assuming you include the B-25's as long-range bombers. It's interesting you haven't bothered to send any Hudson squadrons to India. Is that because they're no good against Zeroes, or because other aircraft were higher priority?

Harlock,

Well the reason behind that is that I get 50 Blenheim IVs per month but only 10 Hudsons per month so if I were to have a significant number of Hudson units in India I'd end up having no depth to my force. The Hudson is certainly more capable but I prefer to use it to harass the enemy a bit around Australia and New Zealand. I will bring in a couple of Hudson squadrons ( perhaps 32 planes ) when Palembang is close to falling just to help out a little. I'm managing to add about 50 bombers a week to my forces in India via the expedient of flying B-25, B-17 and A-20 squadrons in via Alaska and the Soviet Union/China.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/04/42

Its all getting ominously quiet with Japanese bombers looking like they have redeployed from Hawaii and may be basing out of Kwantung/China. Ah well, when the hammer blow falls I'm sure I'll recognise it and have a little time to adapt. No time worrying about it.

His attacks on Rangoon are definitely falling in intensity. If this continue then in 4 or 5 days time I am going to have to decide if it is worth flying in P-40Es, MiG-3s etc into Rangoon to challenge his aerial supremacy. I doubt it will be worth it though although it would be nice to provide sufficient CAP that my troops can increase the rather low fortification levels.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/05/42

Over the next few days we are definitely going to have some serious ground action in China and the Soviet Union. A major Japanese thrust is making for Borzya. I have 1400 AV there but with 15 units on the way this may not be enough ( especially as Borzya only has Level 4 forts and is in clear terrain.

In China Jagdfluger is making an attack on Kaifeng with what looks like 5 units ( so,call it 4 divisions massing 1200 AV )... Unfortunately he has mistimed his movement by 1 day and so 4 units will arrive in 2 days with the 5th unit arriving the next day. This is all the opportunity I need and so I will mount a spoiling attack seeking to remove these 4 divisions from the enemie's OOB. I won't be able to destroy them but even 2 or 3 forced retreats will be devastating to these divisions and filling this gap in his OOB will lessen the pressure on the Soviet Union and India.

Well these Helens aren't massing the throw weight required to keep PH out of service. I can't regain air superiority but I can surely make a few F4F4s serviceable and sortie my CVL to fly a few onto it. It may cost me a CVL but it is worth it to save 5 fighter squadrons.
