Simple cost comparison of ships to aicraft is deceptive. First, for aircraft you need pilots. As attacks against the Allied fleet in 1945, result in 20-30% losses from flak alone, pilots inevitably will be a bottleneck. Of course, you can use kamikazes, which hit even with miserable skills, but kamikaze have their own limitations, like apparently reduced damage compared to just bombing the target. Second, your air effort is also limited by airbases and support, unless we talk about the battle for Home Islands, and possibly even then. Third, even an inferior surface force can disrupt a landing, or cause an amphibious TF to delay/retreat, if it gets lucky, possibly buying you crucial time. I see no reason to turn off most of naval production until Home Islands are cut off from DEI.

interesting comment about Kamis causing less damage than just bombing a target. Where do you get that from? Are we talking about a bug, design or is that just your impression? [&:]

My impression from running tests in Downfall. A single 250-kg bomb delivered by a kamikaze usually does only mild damage to Allied DDs. 2-3 hits are needed to cripple a DDs or create a danger of sinking. Reports from Downfall AARs also show less than imressive damage for the carried number of bombs. I cannot exclude the possibility of this being whims of the random number generator, though.

this doesn´t really sound like it would work as it should be. I found your comment quite interesting because I had just recently a CVE hit by a Frank on Kamikaze and I thought that would turn out to be pretty bad as the Frank would carry two bombs, plus the aircraft itselve just to find out the CVE had 12 sys, nearly no flt and no fire and I thought it would have been a very lucky die roll. In WITP Kami damage was quite high.

Make the 6 Unryu class Accelerated from the start, halt Musashi, Shinano and the late war RO subs to pay for them. Convert all CS to CVL.

This way (assuming no CVs are sunk on either side) you will have parity with the Allies in carrier a/c numbers until late 44.

not if you take all the Allied CVE into that counting. [;)]
