Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Butuan one of the last strongholds on Mindanao has fallen to the Japanese aggressors. With the fall of Manila yesterday and the continued success of Jap forces in Mindanao, there is starting to be speculation that an invasion of Midway or Pearl Harbor could come at any time.

In Manchuria there appears to be a major battle forming near Jehol. Chinese forces have skirmished with a large Jap force West of the city. It appears to consist of 2 Jap divisions and several squadrons of armored cars. The Republic of China has been gathering an army at Peking to oppose the Japanese in Manchuria but forces are still in transit.

At sea things remain quiet at the fleet manuever for position. the Asiatic Fleet HQ was captured when Manila fell and the Asiatic Fleet lies exposed. There are rumors that the fleet will be withdrawn from the South China Sea.

Dateline Shanghai:

A major Japanese Army of over 40,000 troops is moving on the Manchurian city of Jehol. Republic of China forces are moving in to defend the town.

In a minor battle outside the city the 49th Chinese Division was forced to retreat back towards Jehol.

The stalemate at sea continues as both sides manuever their fleets.

Dateline Shanghai:

Relatively minor developments in the war. The Manchurian town of Linhsi fell to Jap forces. Meanwhile Chinese and Jap forces continue to mass near Jehol.

In other news the British send a formal protest to the Imperial Japanese government about submarines patrolling near Hong Kong. The British government is implementing ASW patrols in Hong Kong and warns the Japs they bear full responsibility for any incidents in Hong Kong.

It is also noted that convoy HK-110 is nearing Singapore where it will pick up escorts and move on Hong Kong.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

US ASW forces continue to try to hunt down a Jap sub in Pearl Harbor. So far they have met with little success. Destroyers armed with Depth Charges have been arriving daily in the port and it is hoped that this new ASW capability will help drive off the Jap subs.

As previously reported Capt TankerAce the former IG of the ASW Department was recently court-marshaled for dereliction of duty in regards the US pre-war ASW stance. There are serious questions about the US ASW capability. The Japanese seem to be much better at ASW warfare and have already sunk 2 US Submarines. So far the US has not so much as scored a direct hit on a sub.

Meanwhile the whereabouts of the Jap fleet that bombarded Midway several days ago is unknown. US scouting forces are scouring the sealanes, so far without success.

A US Cruiser squadron bombarded Jap positions on Canton Island inflicting light casualties.

The British report attacking a Jap Sub in Hong Kong. It is unknown if they scored any damage. British authorities have warned the Japanese government that they will be increasing their ASW patrols in Hong Kong to keep the port clear.

DEFENSE OF PEARL HARBOR IN DOUBT!!!!!

Recent evidence suggests a massive Japanese buildup in the Saipan and Wake Island areas. With the quick subjugation of the Philippines the Japanese will have more than enough forces to overwhelm the small US garrisons in Hawaii and Midway. Troops are being rushed to the theatre and 50,000 additional men have recently been drafted. However it will be many months before a meaningful number of men will be available for deployment overseas.

The defense of the West Coast of the US lies in the seemingly incompetent hands of the US Navy. The war has been going for close to 5 weeks now and the US Navy has managed to lose several submarines, over 10 of their Bird Class ASW platforms along with several tankers and destroyers by being caught unawares at Midway. The only naval successes so far have been with Admiral Cunningham's Asiatic fleet and the daring of Battlecruiser Squadron 1.

The US Navy did score their first hit on a Jap sub. Evidence suggests that a Jap sub was heavily damaged at Laysan Island, west of Pearl Harbor.

The British Navy reports that a Jap submarine fired a torpedo at a British destroyer today in Hong Kong. Fortunately the torpedo missed. The ASW patrol searched for the sub but could not find it. Additional destroyers from Singapore have been dispatched to Hong Kong to beef up the ASW patrol in Hong Kong.

CHANGE IN HOUSE RULES

Post by Mike Carroll »

In the house rules we stated that the British and Australians would come into the war if the Jap score was 3 to 1 vs. the US Score. We are either at that point or very close. Both Helpless and I feel that the situation is not so dire that the British would come in. So we have changed 3 to 1 Activation to 4 to 1 Activation. We have also changed the 4 to 1 to 5 to 1

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Early indications are that at least part of the main Japanese fleet is massing at Wake Island. There are also some indications of a Jap buildup near Kwajalein.

Jap air forces struck at the US/Filippino forces at Bataan. So far the Japs have not moved on Bataan but US commanders do not expect that to last long.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Admiral Cunninghams Asiatic fleet bombarded the port of Lingayen today inflicting minor casaulties today.

At Wake Island the superior Jap ASW capabilities damaged two US subs operating in the area. They have been forced to retire to Pearl Harbor for repairs.

US ASW patrols at Pearl Harbor appear to have damaged a Jap sub. Such reports are largely unreliable.

The British government has announced that convoy HK-110 will be departing Singapore on 9 July bound for Hong Kong. It will be heavily escorted by the elements of the British Fleet. Force S has departed Singapore today bound for Hong Kong. It is a reinforcement to the ASW patrol there.

Dateline Midway:

The tension mounts as the apparent Jap buildup continues at Wake and Saipan.

Bataan has been subjected to additional air raids but the impact has been minimal.

A US destroyer on ASW patrol was torpedoed at Midway. Again it is apparent that the US is poorly prepared for ASW combat. But there have been some successes over the past several days and it is hoped that the situation will improve.

Rear Admiral Beardall was assigned command of Battlefleet today. It is hoped that this aggressive and innovative commander will be able to get things done and decisively defeat the Imperial Japananese Navy.

The British Government confirmed today that convoy HK-110 departed Singapore enroute to Hong Kong. It is heavily escorted by the Royal Navy and the Japanese have been put on notice not to interfere with its passage.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

BATAAN FALLS!!!!! JAP FLEET TERRORIZES CHINESE COAST!

The small US and Fillipino garrison at Bataan was overwhelmed by close to 175,000 Japanese troops. After a day of vicious hand to hand combat, US commanders were left with no choice but to surrender. The International Red Cross is demanding access to the prisoners, but so far they have been met with silence from the Imperial Japanese Army.

There are rumblings of another Senate inquiry into the seemingly poor state of the US garrison in the Philippines. In War Plan ORANGE the Philippines was susposed to hold out for 6 months. With the exception of some guerillas on Mindanao and some small garrisons scattered around the surrounding islands, the Philippines did not last 6 weeks. With war building for 4 years, why was the Army not better prepared? Army spokesmen point to budget cuts and the generally low budgets given the military as the primary reason for the current state of US defenses. One spokesman went so far as to say "If the Congress wants to investigate us, then they should review their own activities and policies over the last four years".

The Japanese also bombarded the Chinese ports of Canton and Tientsin inflicting light casualties. But the predations of the Imperial Japanese Navy off the coast of China has thrown the local economies into chaos. Additional troops have been sent to the ports to put down riots and secure government buildings.

The British announced that convoy HK-110 which is ferrying the 23rd Indian Division to Hong Kong is 5 days out of Hong Kong. They reiterate that the Japanese should steer clear of the convoy. This is the second of two convoys ferrying reinforcements to the Crown Colony.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The Jap fleet bombarded the Chinese port of Tsingtao today in a blatant violation of International law. The port has not military significance and is just the prelude to Japanese trying to dominate China.

Intelligence reports continued Jap buildups near Wake, Saipan and Marcus Islands. The fall of Bataan will have far reaching consequences as it frees up a large number of Japanese troops to move on Pearl Harbor and Midway. The US is rushing any and all reinforcements to Pearl Harbor, but will it be too little too late?

On the political front Senater Bernie TankerAce (Junior Senator from Oklahoma), the brother of disgraced Capt TankerAce was brought up on federal charges for fraud. Apparently he was instrumental in influencing his brother to award several major maintenance contracts to campaign contributors. It is also thought that a good percentage of these contracts actually ended up back in his campaign chest. This scandal could have long reaching ramifications in the whole process the War Department uses to award contracts to civilian vendors.

The Navy has lost 2 submarines to air attack and it is clear that air power will play a critical ASW role in the future.

small correction.. [;)]

Edit: oops... the first one was from ship-ASW...

The worst part is it does not even account for the 3 subs that were heavily damaged by your air!

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The quiet that has descended over the Pacific is somewhat deceptive. The US building up in Hawaii continues and every day of delay allow US forces to grow stronger.

Meanwhile the saga engulfing the TankerAce family continues. LT Herbert TankerAce (retired) (former Capt), the disgraced and court-marshaled former head of the Navy's ASW Dept was arrested today for disorderly conduct. Apparently he was drinking in Smokey's Pub in Oklahoma City when some patrons made some disparaging remarks about his brother Senator Bernie TankerAce. The ensuing fight caused over $500 in damage and Herbert TankerAce was taken to the hospital for severe head injuries. He will be booked in court on Friday July 16th.

Recent intel shows that the Japanese may be making some moves against the Chinese forces massing at Jehol in Manchuria. The battle should develop over the next several days.

Updated Honor Rules

Post by Mike Carroll »

I made the following changes.

1. Removed automatic activation for all British Empire powers (British, Commonwealth, Australia, New Zealand)

2. Moved the opening of Australian bases to US forces from Jan 1923/27 to June 1923/1927

More to come probably.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

BATTLE OF MANILA BAY!!!

Admiral Carpender's Asiatic Fleet sortied into Manila Bay in an attempt to destroy a flotilla of Jap Minesweepers that was operating in the area. They encountered a Jap surface combat Task Force near Bataan. The US/French Force charged the Japanese. Admiral Carpender was attempting to make a torpedo run on the Jap Battleships. The only successful torpedo run was intercepted by the Jap Destroyer Tokitsukaze, which placed itself in front of the Battleship Fuji and took the torpedo hit. Earlier in the battle the Tokitsukaze also suffered an internal explosion. Admiral Carpender withdrew his fleet leaving 3 Jap destroyers heavily damaged for moderate damage to two of his own.

The value of aircraft in ASW warfare was struck home today. 3 US subs operating in the Wake Island area suffered 5 successful attacks from aircraft. R-16 immediately sank and two other subs were heavily damaged and are withdrawing from the area. To date the US has lost 4 submarines, 3 to air attack and one to conventional ASW operations.

The Jap 61st Naval Guard unit trapped on Canton Island attempted to overrun the base, but the US Marine contingent was able to throw back the attack.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The cat and mouse of scouting squadrons continues in the heavily travelled waters between Wake Island and Midway.

Reinforcements continue to flow to Hawaii, but will it be enough to fend off the massive redeployment of Japanese forces underway from the Philippines.

The Asiatic fleet will do what it can to interrupt, delay or otherwise cause the Japs problems. A major obstacle is a lack of major ports to refit with torpedoes and ammunition.

The lone AD, the Asiatic fleet has is being forced to change ports in order to try to avoid the Jap fleet. It would be helpful if the British would allow the use of Hong Kong or Singapore. But so far they have resisted efforts by the US to become more broadly engaged in supporting the war. Without more active support the Asiatic fleet may be forced to withdraw from the theatre.

The British announced the arrival of the 23rd Indian Division in Hong Kong. This completes the strengthening of the garrison of Hong Kong. British ASW patrols continue to operate in the harbor and the Jap subs are warned to stay away.
