APD McKean
APD Little
DD Aylwin
DD Perkins
DD Fanning
DD Grayson

Allied ground losses:
18 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

we continue to attack the troop convoy. One torp out of a salvo of 6 hits the big AP, which won´t be enough to sink such a big ship.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 69,131

Japanese Ships
SS I-3, hits 2

Allied Ships
DD Stewart
DD Parrott
DD Smith

ASW TF that is following the troop convoy one hex behind... one real hit...

we lose the usual 4 Sallies again. 3 ops, 1 flak... 3 Dakota I are also lost to ops so I bet they are still flying supplies to Homan. Amazing how they do that to a completely wrecked airfield.

Allied Ships
DD Stewart
DD Parrott
DD Smith

DD Russell

I-3 gets attacked again and is hit with another real hit. Damage is at 37/79 so this is probably the second sub lost during the operation on the troop convoy. Means 2 subs lost for 2 DDs and an AP damaged. Not really good for us...

the expected attack. As hoped, we can withstand a deliberate attack, a shock attack would have kicked us out probably. Also the deliberate attack nearly achieved a 2:1. Only 50.000 Chinese troops more but 2500 assault points more... [X(]

ASW attack at 67,131

Japanese Ships
SS I-18, hits 9, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Rathburne
DD Lawrence
DD Humphreys
DD Scout

I-18 is sunk immediately. DD Scout is the one that sunk the sub on it´s own. Means I lost 3 subs for damaging 2 DDs, 1 AP and perhaps sinking one AO. Really amazing how heavily escorted those convoys were. If my opponent will escort all his convoys like this then all I can do is have my subs sitting in port somewhere in Japan. There were more than 20 DDs around... [8|]

two big tank brigades (with 200+ assault value those brigades look more like divisions...), an Indian division, a base force and another understrenght Indian division are defending Myitkina. 55 out of 103 Tojos scramble. Seems impossible to get more than 50% of the fighters in the air. 55 Tojos are no match for the bombers it seems. What was really surprising is the fact that only one out of 48 grounded fighters was destroyed. Must have been a very unlucky die roll for the Allied as "normally" I would expect min. 30 destroyed on the ground, bringing up the kill/deatch ratio of the 4Es to at least 2:1...

nice alt to attack a super defense base with a 100% success rate... last turn 14-21.000 ft (one plane destroyed on the ground), this turn ALL 6000 ft (everything destroyed on the ground). This turn again showed that this PBEM won´t go for long anymore. There´s just no sense in playing it through the long run (really cool that I´ve got two stock games in late 43 and early 44). More than 70 fighters were undamaged after the last turn, with 90% cap I see a LAUGHABLE number of 21 in the air... this with the last patch implemented randomness of radar must mean for the Japanese that don´t have a radar at all to never bring up more cap than 50% at best. Going down with the randomness to 10-15% what I´ve seen so far in the game. What really is funny to me is that my Allied opponent kind of complained about the last turn when he lost a dozen bombers to only 3 of my fighters. Now the kill rate of the UNESCORTED bombers is at 3 or 4:1 again... which has been the overall kill rate of unescorted Allied bombers for the last 8 months. The FIRST 8 months of the war so it can just go worse.... hahahaha

The really ridicoulos fact is that with a better A2A model like we have it here you get completely off situations (like I see them in other AARs playing the same campaign too). The A2A works just perfect but it doesn´t fit all the other factors of the game. There´s no flak, no matter how many bombers you damage, they are back the next day, instead of inoperational for a week, FAR too many available that do far too many damage (if I think about my 50 - 60.000 ground casualties so far then the smiling goes on...) and so on...

never seen so many runway hits as the Japanese. Transports are still flying supplies to Homan as LRCAP intercepts them. Though none of the transports was shot down. A Dakota I and a C-47 was lost to ops... The runway and airbase is 100% damaged as you can imagine with such results. That doesn´t hinder the transports though. I´ve lost two dozen fighters so far that are flying LRCAP (3 hexes and I´m rotating them every turn...) and the LRCAP was able to take perhaps 5-6 transports down... [8|]

house rule about not constantly bombing of empty bases seems not in effect anymore... it´s allowed to bomb empty bases now and then to bring the damage up to 100% again as the "native" engineers are repairing the bases, slowly, but they are repairing. NO CONSTANT bombing allowed though...

a dozen base forces are able to damage 5 out of 100+ bombers. Not even 5%... outside a base the same number of units was able to damage (or take down) 39 out of 45 bombers... hey, is there something wrong??? No, there´s nothing wrong with the game... [>:] 6 Tojos torched on the ground brings the total losses of Tojos to 50 (out of 108) for the loss of perhaps 20-25 bombers... [8|]

My Dinah IIs report one guerilla unit North and one South obviously marching towards hexes to cut off my troops at Changsha. Mmmmmm, we have a house rule about only using "real" combat units to create ZOCs to cut off enemy troops. If the Allied use those 5-10 assault point guerilly units then I will use Japanese construction battailons too. Next house rule without effect it seems...[:(]

168 4Es out of Darwin... [8|] they attack at a range of 13 and guess what! NOT A SINGLE 4E FROM THIS ATTACK IS LOST TO OPS (not a single 4E out of 260+ is lost to ops today, all operating at looong range). I´m not saying Japanese medium bombers should be compared with Allied 4Es but when I see 260+ Allied 4Es attacking on and on and on at looong range taking 0 op losses most times but my Sallies attacking at a range of 3 and they take 5+ op losses all the time then I think there is something wrong (within other things... [8|]). At least 20%+ of those 4Es flying 1560 miles for the attack on Koepang should be NOT ready for action tomorrow... though in the game 99% can fly again tomorrow, again suffering NO losses... [>:] There should just be one of those famous die rolls that make a BIG number of planes not operational after such an attack for 3 days+. I bet in the game the Allied drop FAR MORE bombs into the jungle than in real life were dropped on Germany...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

the short time of Allied bomber attacks couldn´t really harm our ground units and we kick the Allied out with our second shock attack. We achieve nearly 200 points in ground losses, so a couple of squads should have been destroyed. We will probably see a huge bomber attack on the airbase next turn which will take out 2000-3000 of our support troops. All units are ordered to march out of the base immediately...

will take still a long time for the sub transports to evac all those troops. At least a year we will still have a target for our training squadrons.

3 dozen bombers, 1084 casualties... note the complete INEFFECTIVE flak...

At least your mud strip in the jungle is still operational. The result is hardly any more ridiculous than the PH strike which knocks out 5 different well developed airfields on Oahu for 4 days with a total of about 60 bombs from 2 carriers' Kates.

yeah that´s the same, but it doesn´t make it any better. Not at all, if you compare the perhaps three days of pearl harbour with the following 4 years... [8|]

and I have yet to find a reason why flak (Japanese flak) is 10 times more effective if NOT the base is the target...

after two failed attacks weeks ago, the Allied are attacking again and our heartbeat goes up for a moment. 1:1 and far from 2:1 with heavy losses to the Chinese again. While our losses seem severe too, in fact "only" the five HQs that are the first units in the stack are completely wrecked... [8|] Don´t want to write about that again, I just don´t understand it why HQs in the rear area of the front should be the nummero uno target during a ground combat and not the inf units lying in the trenches... Grigsby knows best... [;)]

SS Cuttlefish, hits 9

Allied ground losses:

Cuttlefish had to go through Bataan when leaving Manila where it had picked up another fragment. My DDs were waiting already and 2 of them actually engaged the sub and achieved 8 near misses and a real hit. Not much damage it seems though... perhaps another FOW thing...

USS Cuttlefish (SS-171), 1934-1947
USS Cuttlefish, a 1130-ton Cachalot class submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned in June 1934. Following initial service in the Atlantic area, she went to the Pacific in June 1935 and operated along the West Coast and in Hawaiian waters until late June 1937. Based at Groton, Connecticut, Cuttlefish spent more than a year on experimental and training duties at the Naval Submarine School. From October 1938 to March 1939 she performed similar functions at Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone. The submarine operated out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after June 1939, participating in combat readiness exercises and making cruises to Samoa and the U.S. Pacific coast.

When the Pacific war began in December 1941 Cuttlefish was completing an overhaul at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California. Following her return to Pearl Harbor, she began her first war patrol in January 1942. This took her into the north central Pacific, where she gathered information on Japanese-held islands. Her second war patrol, into the Marianas in May 1942, included three encounters with enemy forces that subjected her to depth charge and bombing attacks. While returning to Pearl Harbor in early June, Cuttlefish was assigned picket duty well to the west of Midway Atoll. In the early stages of what became the Battle of Midway, she detected and reported part of the Japanese fleet advancing to attack that U.S. forward base.

Cuttlefish's third war patrol, off Japan in July-September 1942, included several attacks on enemy shipping but apparantly generated no sinkings. Like most U.S. submarines of her generation, she suffered from chronic mechanical problems and, at the end of that cruise, was ordered to the Atlantic for training service. She spent the rest of World War II assigned to the Groton Submarine School, helping to prepare submarine officers and men for combat. USS Cuttlefish was decommissioned in October 1945 and sold for scrapping in February 1947.

hopefully USS Cuttlefish in the game won´t see action the whole war... [:D]

this has no sense... moving my unit back to Cagayan... would think that this 0/0/0 Allied unit won´t be able to take a base, though I bet it can and soon I will see it moving into an unoccupied base on Mindanao and the deliberate attack will take the base... [8|]

not good to see that my first strike (airfield attack) seems to always go in without escort when I have also ordered ground attacks that go in second. The ground strike gets all the fighters which could lead to a disaster... IF only one strike get´s escort then the only logic would be to give it to the FIRST strike... dumb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here comes todays surprise...

moved a 12 plane Tony chutai to Taung Gyi (cap 90) to have the aircraft symbol pop up on the map knowing that this will IMMEDIATELY attract a huge bomber strike with all the Allies have... they thought they could again destroy dozens of fighters on the ground for only losing 10 bombers... this time my opponent thought wrong as I have only this small group there but am flying LRCAP with 72 Tonies from Rahaeng also. The first wave is met by 31 Tonies and is shot up pretty good.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
no surprise, the next wave...

Day Air attack on Taung Gyi , at 33,32

Japanese aircraft
Ki-61 KAIb Tony x 16

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 16

Runway hits 80

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet
12 x Wellington III bombing at 6000 feet

The clue is to always send in the smallest wave first, because no matter if it´s small it damages A LOT of fighters and the next (bigger wave) has to face far less fighter, while the last (biggest) wave is in no trouble at all then... [8|]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
no surprise either, the hammer goes in as the last wave... funny to see that this kind of coordination is just perfectly working. Probably it´s just luck that this order of attacks is happening but it´s really working perfect for the Allied...

whenever there is an aircraft symbol over my base, the Allied bombers all are coming in at 6000 ft as this is the perfect altitude to destroy between 60 and 90% of the grounded planes that don´t fly cap. At 15.000+ ft they still achieve a lot of hits but the destroyed planes are going down to very low numbers it seems. Of course the 14 Tonies left are no match for the 4Es and not much is happening. The base is out of action again of course... While the Allied lost 47 planes today all in all and we only lost 12 which still is not really encrouraging as only 3 of the 4Es were lost, which are our primary target. 3 is just a joke as the Allied get 5 [8|][8|] every day and they are just immune to everything and are repaired at the same rate as my Tonies/Tojos. I tested it and while I get an average of 4 IJA fighters in a daitai repaired every day, I also get 3 4E bombers repaired in every squadron... [X(][X(][X(] Why this is like this, I don´t know... Thought with more than twice the durability of the 4Es compared to my fighters they SHOULD repair at a far LOWER rate which really surprised me, it is not like this. I thought this would be common sense that it takes longer to repair and maintain such a 4E bomber than it takes to repair and maintain a fighter...

Common sense is nothing that brings you further in this game... I already mentioned in the past the relation between common sense and programmers... [:D]

89 unescorted 4Es are coming in, range 13. Out of around 90 undamaged IJA fighters 42 are in the air. [8|] They manage to take down 8 Liberator III today. Nothing more... [8|] We lose 41 aircraft today, 2 Sallies and 39 Tojo/Tony at Rahaeng. A2A kill rate of the 4Es today was 6 kills for 8 losses, 33 [8|] fighters were destroyed on the ground. Means the kill rate of the 4Es is once again around 5:1 laugh, cough, laugh, cough, laugh, cough, cough.... [8|][8|][8|] As you can see, with 9 damaged B-24 the fighters are not able to take one down. The ratio between killed and damaged 4E is somewhere around 10. Not saying this is unrealistic but you see how it effects the game with all the UNREALISTIC side effects of the availability of B-52s... Those bomber pilots must have a fatigue somewhere between 40 and 50 now, still not a single is lost to ops. When I would use a Sally datai with a fatigue of 50 and transferr them 3 hexes then 15 would be lost to ops... 3 dozen 4Es are damaged, they will be repaired in 3 or 4 days again... probably I will see 60-70 4Es again tomorrow... cough, cough...

If the availability of the 4Es would be 100% more than it was in real life (not replacement rate, availability for operations) then it would be perfectly realistic coupled with the very good working A2A model of the mod. The only problem is that nearly the same number of 4Es can destroy another 40 fighters on the ground tomorrow. The day after tomorrow again, in three days again....

You can see a nearly 100% availability of the B-17 and B-24 squadrons. Those are bomber groups with a max of 24 planes. While all the time there are a lot damaged this turn 23 of 24 B-24 and 21 of 24 B-17 attacked again. I took notes and those are not bomber groups that are rotated, they are always the same... [8|][8|][8|]

The article about the 5th airforce that denisohn posted some time ago really opened my eyes, we are just playing an Alice in the bunny land game... we are so far from reality (not just the 4Es, a lot of what I´m having available too) that this game is as realistic as the often mentioned World of Warcraft... wonder what is more realistic though...

and I have yet to find a reason why flak (Japanese flak) is 10 times more effective if NOT the base is the target...

One of GG's mysteries.

Don't know if you played UV, but one of the earlier versions had a pretty realistic rate of damage/repair/rate of availibility for all aircraft, especially the multi-engined ones. Due to the damage and lack of repair it made it hard to transfer squadrons. Most people didn't like it and it was changed. Personally, I liked it.

never played UV, if I would, perhaps I wouldn´t have bought WITP! [:D]

Would love to see a realistic damage/repair/rate of availability! Get this done and probably half of the problems in WITP are solved... that´s the problem of game designers, they have to follow the wishes of their customers. If they don´t want a more or less realistic game but instead a game that has 10 times more planes available for strikes then the designers follow those wish - unfortunately.

TF 1054 encounters mine field at Wallis Island (93,107)

Allied Ships
CA New Orleans, Mine hits 1 Type 88

now that was something I was happy to see about. No biggy the cruiser isn´t heavily damaged, it isn´t even on fire, though perhaps it has to spend some time in the repair yards on the West coast. With the dozen CAs the Allied lost so far this is surely not something the Allied commander likes to see. Those mines were layed two turns ago! [:D]

Day Air attack on Chungking , at 43,32

Allied aircraft
I-16c x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-61 KAIb Tony: 1 destroyed

I-16c: 3 destroyed, 1 damaged

at Chungking there are reported 45 transports (those who fly supply to Homan). I ordered 300 Sallies to attack the airfield which should have gone in AFTER this sweep. However just before this sweep, "Sally not able to find target". The sweep was supposed to clear the skies BEFORE the bombers are going in... why should I think that this works? So I would have been really lucky to see my bombers fail to find target if there were a bigger cap...

here we go at Taung Gyi again! 90+ fighters, not even half of them in the air... surprising? Not anymore... the next strikes will surely follow, meeting an even smaller cap...
