1. How do you improve a (Japanese Land unit's) morale in AE because there is no way to do it in Witp! I even tried shipping units back to Tokyo, nothing worked, units that started with low morale stayed low period!

2. Morale for air units in Witp would sometimes jump up and down like a yoyo!

Thanks for the reply Andy. Thats all we needed to know.

You all have certainly had your hands full with bigger fish than this issue, so its certainly understandable. Perhaps a future patch can look into it?

Regardless, thanks again for the post and looking forward to finally seeing the release!

Might be worth to be looked at.
Example: Port Moresby Defense Brigade, fully supplied, June 1945. Morale: 7
Disruption 16, Fatigue 37.

Of course, no effect on the game. Still, it looks sort of silly.
Cheers
Rainer

The poor boys in the Port Moresby Defense Brigade have spent the war sitting at the same old place with nothing but rain, mud, malaria and boredom for years, while soldiers in other units travelled world, saw many places, met interesting people and killed some of them, in short got all the excitement, glory, medals and VD - no wonder morale at PM is so low...

Actually in stock just letting units sit (in a temperate spot) for a looong enough time (months) will eventually raise them up to 99 morale. In AE same process except now there is a new "Rest/Training" mode. Units in this mode will recover morale and other attributes more quickly. Needless to say units spend a lot of time in this mode - but be careful - you don't want to be engaged in any type of combat activity while in this mode (including getting bombed).

. . . now there is a new "Rest/Training" mode . . .

This is unrelated to malaria, but will units 'train' in this mode even without 100 planning points? In vanilla WitP, you would not start training until you had 100 training points, IIRC.

Thanks in advance.

As per stock - you will not start gaining experience until you have 100 preparation points. Not sure whether this is like stock - but each "nation" also has maximums that can be gained in this way - typically in the 50-70 range.

Yeah, its somewhere in the manual what each nation and branch can train too.

So if a unit has 100 prep points, but is *not* in 'Rest/Training' mode, will they no longer train?

They will still train.

Im just curious, this is by no means a critism or a suggestion that it should be different, but why is it called 'Rest/Training' then when training can occur in any op mode, and even when the LCU is in the 'Rest/Training' mode, it is not necessarily training?

Is it just to imply that the unit is far from combat duties at the time and is training and/or resting?

Thanks again for all the replies Joe. Everything is looking great, you and your team have done wonders on this!

It does have an effect on the game. It implies the historical operations in Burma during 1943-45 are not feasible. Both sides are down to a morale of about 10 by the time of the Japanese offensive, and are 0 during Slim's blitzkrieg to Rangoon.

In Witp there was nothing you could do to raise morale, I even tried shipping troops with low morale back to Japan for R&R. it didn't work.

Eh...what?

Try to put them in a non-malaria, well supplied base under the command of a leader with good inspiration. If you can, put a HQ in the base aswell.

What Tokyo isn't a malaria free zone??[8|]

How do you raise morale?

What about low morale ground units that aren't in a malaria zone?

I've never seen a leader raise moral of a ground unit what's not in combat!

For morale to rise, the unit's disruption has to be zero.

Yesterday I just read the section of Fire in the Sky that covered the impact of desease on the campaign and in spite of the use of DDT, malaria continued to be a significant problem, even for the Allies right up to the end.

Most troops ignored the "regulations" requiring long sleves and long pants and pants to be tucked into boots. Many avoided taking their atabrine because it turned their skin yellow and a rumor ran rampant that it caused sterility.

Whether or not this nagging condition should cause a serious drop in morale is really the question and I tend to agree that the current effect is a bit over the top.

It shouldn't reduce morale to the single digits by 1944, which the current model does.

I had a Raider battalion LCU with a Morale of 1 after just a few weeks in combat on New Guinea.  I shipped them back to Noumea (non-malaria zone) and left them there to recover.  Months later they had improved to only 5!  I considered sending them to Sydney to see if they'd like Australian women better than French Pacific women, but eventually they began getting happier (but never really thrilled, IIRC their morale never went above 40) before I sent them off to the Central Pacific...

In stock I took Allied morale 0-5 units from early war Burma campaign and put them in Calcutta - in a few months they were 80+ morale. In AE we have a new "mode" called "rest/training" in this mode morale is recovered more quickly - but this mode cannot be entered if in a hex with the enemy.

The black hole of Calcutta is a better R&R base than Noumea?[X(] Hmmmm, let's post some 1940s pics for comparison. This reminds me of an old banter between Mogami and myself regarding the justification for the massive amount of supplies produced at resource centres, specifically Toboali in the DEI.[8D]

Hopefully the addition of the 'rest/training' mode will offset this issue.

Like I said a number of times in here and the other, new thread: this is by no means a critical issue. But it would be nice to see some improvement in this area post release.

Thanks again for the reply Joe.

Plus, Noumea was maxed out both as a base and airfield, had South Pacific HQ located there, and tens of thousands of supply points, so in theory everything was optimized to improve morale very quickly with any unit there.

I take it morale can be recovered as long as you're not in a hex with the enemy?

I understand New Caledonia is similar to the south of France.
