RE: Starcraft 2
Well I was correct the first time. SC2 you can't play off line. Get this. If you, lets say come home and your internet is down then you can't play it off line but if you are able to connect to blizzard and then lose your internet connection it will allow you to play off line(if you have activiated the game).
Talk about stupid.[:o][&:][:@]

You can play the game offline. My internet had the very very rare downtime Tuesday afternoon and I was able to play. Battle.net will ask you to sign in and if you click ok and it tells you that you cannot connect then you can continue in offline mode.
You can play campaign and skirmish but achievements are not recorded.

I hope you remembered to send a thank you note along w/ your check or money order.

Yes, the game recognizes that you do not have a connection and tells you that it cannot sign into Battle.net and then gives you single player options.

I'd like to buy Starcraft 2 as my sons and I still play the original over LAN as multiplayer all the time and have a blast.
However, I don't think anyone in this thread has mentioned that there is no LAN support for multiplayer- you have to log in to a Battlenet account. As a result one copy of the game is required per player - that would be $180 for me and my 2 sons!!!!
At someone mentioned above I hope Matrix, Battlefront, HPS etc don't get tempted down this slippery slope and devalue / overprice their games...
I won't be buying in disgust at the money grab.

RE: Starcraft 2
I understand where your coming from. I only will play two rts games SC and Tiberium wars(long time player of both). When the expansion for tiberium wars came out it required a internet connection but the first game did not.....So I am done with the series.[:-]

RE: Starcraft 2
If you have one million customers who will buy the game at $40 you will take in $40 million.
If you release the game with things that will make some people not buy it,..you raise the price so that those who will buy it make up the difference.
750,000 customers at $60 = $45 million
So they lose 250,000 customers,...but still end up making more....................... and wait until they release an expansion pack that adds the zerg and then the one that adds the protoss,........they will be charging full price for games that cost them a fraction of the development cost of Wings of Liberty.
Depending on how you look at it its either REALLY smart or REALLY greedy.
EDIT- there is the slim hope that they will release the next two campaigns as expasnions. Also there is the possibilty of a 'full game' version of Heart of the Swarm which is a stand alone game and an 'add on' version which upgrades Wings of Liberty at a reduced price.
Regardless this game is going to make such an obscene amount of money that any tactics designed to bleed extra money out of the custumer is really unecessary and unacceptable.

RE: Starcraft 2
I failed to realize that we reached a moment in history when making a good or service that people want to buy is an obscene thing. Profits is how and why the games are made, if you don't like the marketing strategy don't buy the product.

We don't like it and we won't! [:)]
I failed to realize that we reached a moment in history where we can't discuss that a corporation may have gone over the line in balancing their corporate profit with customer service - possibly (hopefully?) to their detriment.

What is the complaint on customer service? I've not had any issues with battle.net or Blizzard.
They could charge $50 and a monthly server usage fee, but they don't. They could have done DLC for additional special Terrian units, but they didn't. They could have only activated one side for multiplayer, but they didn't. They could have release a broken game with tons of bugs and poor AI, but that's not the case either. They choose to go with a seperate campaign for each faction in an expansion. I fail to see the issue. Again it's not unlike many, many other games on the market.
Anyway it really doesn't matter. I've the feeling some will never be happy and will always find a reason to complain about how unfair any game developer/publisher is in marketing strategy.

Some people dont realize they are getting screwed over,....some do, but are willing to accept it as the price that has to be paid to have their favorite hobby. Neither is a good thing, and the latter is most definately not true.
As I posted earlier nobody is 100% sure how the next two installments are going to be released. From all the signs their current marketing campaign gives,..they will be full priced stand alone games.

Customer Service isnt just when you have a problem,...but the service a company gives its customers from the beginning. If you screw your customers over in ANY way,...you dont have good custumer service.
EDIT- to be fair though it is considered by many to only be how well a company deals with a customer when they have a problem. We dont really know how Activizzards customer service is going to be yet.......................
RE: Starcraft 2
How have they "screwed" the customer over with Starcraft 2?
RE: Starcraft 2
Scott;
How does the game play? Is Starcraft 2 better than Starcraft? Is it worth the hype? Is it just another Command and Conquer clickfest and then run out of a resource and lose?
It's a shame that it won't ever be on sale at Steam. I see NO Blizzard games on Steam at all.
I don't mind paying big bucks for a game that's worth it, but from the videos I've watched and from all I've read, my $60 is staying put.

RE: Starcraft 2
Bison,...as of now they havent, which will get into LarryP's question. But if they release the next two campaigns as stand alone games with no option to get them without buying the entire game,....again,........then they will be most definately screwing their customers over. That appears to be their plan,...but we dont know for sure.
As for the game,..LarryP,..is it definately a good game. It is better than the orignal starcraft,.....with the MP part still needing to be worn in to be determined but looking good as well so far. They put more into the story this time,.....and have a few new features that really are more than just bells and whistles. As always with Blizzard I have heard of very few issues which arent on the users end,....aside from the overheating video card issue. There is no doubt that it is worth buying, if you like RTS games,.............the only question is how much its going to cost to get the other 2 campaigns...........

RE: Starcraft 2
Regarding losing customers because of the required internet connection...
I believe kids these days are very connected with facebook, twitter, etc. and have easy internet access and always online.
Because of this, they will not care about the internet connection requirement for Starcraft 2.
As for me, when ever my computer is turned on, I am automatically and constantly connected to the net. So it's really no big deal.
I hear that the single player campaign story telling is better than the Starcraft 1. Muliplayer is more of the same.
