The defenders of Tomo have shot their bolt!
Fatigue and lack of supplies made it impossible to resist anymore.
There's still one last regiment left - they will Banzai charge the US troops in a last attack!

Also lost a handful of patrol and transport planes. Been flying out base forces the last week. A little surprised that the small airfield didn't get bombed at all?

It took exactly 1 month from I posted the question 'How long can the Jap troops on Noumea hold out?' until they were defeated.
Interestingly enough the last stragglers that got evacuated from Noumea arrived at Truk in sys dam 50+ transports today....

End of chapter....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/08/42

Weather: Thunderstorms

--------------------------------------------------------

Been a while since the last post. The reason can be found in this report ;) Nothing, nix, none, nada is happening.

The Allies need several months to repair and prepare for the great onslaught.

Will step up reporting when things turns hot again......

This game actually got a mirror! Before Crocky took over this game, we had already started another one where I'm playing the Allies. It's about 2.5 months behind in time.

Crocky's been notoriously unlucky in that one! His Jap CV's have been mined and torpedoed. After an early turkey shoot his naval aviators don't hit ****. His last ambush failed to hit a single ship and sent most of his remaining naval aviators into the sea.

I've managed to hold on to PM and there are currently 25k Jap troops there against a similar number allied troops. Got a feeling that the besiegers have become besieged themselves, but I'm not 100% certain....yet!

So we got each our game where the Japs have to do some serious manouevering to avoid total defeat.

Crocky,
Kudos for taking on someone's surrender!
As you know, I am finding it hard to take Noumea as well.
My men are down to thin beer and fish heads.
I wonder, is Auto-Victory such a good idea?

Wanted to harass the buildup around Wupuko! A ca and a cl hit mines on the way in.
Tanaka led the battle which wasn't a decisive one. The Fubuki managed to put a torpedo into the Washington. Hope damage is big enough to send the wagon back home... :D

The Washington got its revenge though, 2 16" shells ripped into the Fubuki. It didn't sink, but got caught by very heavy air attacks when it struggled back home. R.I.P.

Last turn Jap asw groups had a big day! 2 US subs sunk....
11 subs have been lost on both sides so far. (Why oh my can't Tokyo send me another dirty dozen :( )

Long time since the last report, but things have been slow. Just reached December and there's a growing tension in the game.

Seems like the Allies are on the move, probably to create a new base closer to Lunga?

Well, I'm more ready than ever! I've personally occupied a nice apartment in Brisbane and am currently directing operations from there

Just visited the Maritime Museum down here, had a WWII vintage frigate called Diamantia. Here's a pic of me manning the 40mm bofors :p

So if anyone of you guys are in Brisbane, let me know and we'll go grab a beer!

Crocky says that he isn't up to anything  but since I don't regard him as a reliable source of information, I dispatched a scumbat cleansweep patrol to check enemy activity east of Lunga.

Results were quite satisfactory, Matsuyama crossed Cunninghams 'T' and sank the Salt Lake City and bagged a variety of other vessels at Gavigamana.

More action!
Crocky is on the move - securing bases closer to Lunga. I can't allow this. Sent out a big destroyer express loaded with troops to Nevea to make a forward stand.

Not sure what the allied TF did out there, was an inconclusive battle, but that's ok - I didn't send my ships out to fight anyway.
I seldom deploy such large squadrons, it's not very efficient.

So now it'll be interesting to see what happens... Will I be allowed to stay on Nevea and create a forward base that will threaten any allied advance towards Lunga? - or will Crocky lunge :)

The next couple of turns brought mostly minor skirmishes...
Had put 4 DD's in Gili Gili to use as a rapid reaction force in case of enemy raid on PM.

Forget them when a recon mission overflew GG, so the next turn 20 B-17's made biig craters in 3 of them : (

A little concerned about US build up at Gavigamana, managed to mine the base before Crocky :D So a US DM hit a mine this turn! *EG*

Might have to try to prevent a US build up of that base......

My defensive perimeter is now almost finished - a layer of forward bases is protected by a screen of bigger bases. Should be able to slow down a US advance and pound any invasion force in strength.

Will be very interesting to see whether my "fortress" will be able to withstand the attacks of a competent US commander.

That was a modest assessment ;)

You've already prevented an allied defeat by saving Noumea, and can now win the game if I don't manage my resources very carefully.

More allied ships at Gavigamana unloading troops and mines.
Considered to occupy it, but decided against it - to close to Wunpuko...and I wish I had a DMS :(

Instead I'm strengthening my position on Irau and Nevea. The next US step forward will lead to a confrontation.

From another game I learned that Crocky is a 'herder' ;)
150 Jap level bombers suddenly swooped out of the skies, so I expect massive attacks from US US B17's & 24's soon. He has barely used em yet.

The best part of this game is right around the corner!

Hi Nomad, long time!

Well, it was a close shave - just a few k troops from getting a clean 2-1 odds. But that would have efficiently ended the game! In for a lot more fun now ;)

You actually played well - sending in the US cv's to intervene against the PM invasion IS risky, and sometimes it do end like in this scenario.

Holding the US cv's back for 2-3 months until you have 6 of them equipped with updated AA, Avengers and the latest Wildcat model makes them immensly more potent weapons.

Hm, a strange turn! Sent in a surface combat TF to Gavigamana - had spotted a lot of activity there lately. I had to send my TF on a step by step journey to make it arrive undetected from the north. Default route would have sent it south of Lunga....

(I hope they'll make a patch that allow you to plot ship courses yourself one day.) So I had the 'no retreat option' on, forgot to turn it off for the last leg. So my ships stayed a full turn at Gavigamana, not engaging the 2 fat & juicy transport TF's unloading there :(
Even sent in a 'high speed' minesweeper first to clear the waters.

Fortunately bad weather prevented heavy airstrikes and my AA dealt with most of those which did arrive.

I think my plan for a CV battle off Australia was good, just my faulty execution took its toll.

I really didn't leave Crocky in that bad of a position. There were a lot of troops at Port Villa with C-47 transports there also. I was in the middle of a muddled shift change. I didn't think through what I was doing I suppose. I had just put one of the USA Div form SWPAC in at Port Vila and was going to use them to defend PV and Luganville while taking the Americal regiments back to Nouema. But you intervened with your attack on Nouema.

Sorry about how I let a real life imagined crisses affect out PBEM game.

What really killed you was those 100 Dauntlesses that went off on their own and got CAP'ed ;)

That's true - I've sunk an awful lot of US warships, but only 3 CV's have been sunk. So most likely I will LOOSE this game :( A bare 3000 point lead isn't much - unless I handle my dwindling resources very cleverly...

I uttered a few curses when all those troops kept flying in - saved Noumea it did! If you'd like to check out the current situation, I can send you a turn. Guess you still remember your password ;) (I don't)

Hey! Don't worry about that... A rl imagined crisis is ten fold worse than a major crisis in UV! I'm up for a rematch whenever you feel for it.
As you might have noticed, I've moved down to Oz personally to handle things a little closer to the actual battlefronts

Very strange, my bombardment TF went to Gavigamana, sat there for 12 hours and then went straight back home.

Didn't think that was possible with 2 spotted enemy TF's unloading in the harbour and Tanaka as commander? Iffy......

Well, unloaded troops at Irau - and digging in. Santa usually don't bring anything nice to the Nips for Xmas 42 :(
