Scen 17 pbem. An attempt to capture New Caledonia.

Post by PzB74 »

Started this game after Xmas 2002 against Nomad.
I've created an AAR up until august 1942 - this is when you join us. The invasion of Noumea is only 1 day from happening.

Nomad has retired from the game and Crocky has taken over.

So the next post will be very long and without comments from my opponents. From tomorrow of both me and Crocky will comment on the events.

UV Scen 17 The Beginning Ends PBEM game as Japan.

Summary of may and early june:

The first month of operations secured bases at Buna, Gili Gili, Woodlard isl, Russel isl, Vila and Ross isl. Elements of an enemy Bde and eng unit were wiped out at Gili.

Enemy CV¡¦s sortied outside Lunga and sank a minelayer.

I¡¦m keeping my own big ships well out of harms way since his subs are raiding my ports.
ASW groups and planes have hit and reportedly sunk 3 enemy subs.

My own subs are patrolling outside PM and the Australian ports, sinking AK¡¦s and patrol crafts. 1 sub lost to enemy DD¡¦s.

In late may my CV¡¦s raided the New Hebrides and sank a score of troop transports.
The US CV¡¦s had departed only a few days ago, so no resistance was encountered.

Plan to capture Port Moresby. - Operation Divine Dragon.

This will be my first major operation and a dress rehearsal for the rest of the occupation
of the south Pacific.

10 Regiments and 4 HQ¡¦s including the Yazawa Det, 65th Brigade, 21st Ind Mixed Brigade, 2nd Division and 38th Division will land at Port Moresby.

The 2nd Recon Rgt will land on Lea Lea to prevent the Port Moresby garrison from retreating.

Aviation support from Gili Gili will be transported in as soon as PM falls.
A brigade, Naval garrison, heavy AA units and engineers will be the occupation force in PM.

Transportation cost will be in excess of 70000, shipping for 80000 will be provided.

The following ships are currently in the Solomons.

Totally 92 warships

7 CV¡¦s
3 CVL¡¦s
3 CS
2 BB¡¦s
15 CA¡¦s
6 CL¡¦s
40 DD¡¦s
6 APD¡¦s
10 Subs

DD Sazanami hits mine heavy damage

Will miss the invasion.

5 tankers will perform replenishment missions.
Subs will cover Port Moresby and approaches plus search for enemy CV¡¦s.
Mine sweepers will sweep the shallow shores in the invasion groups path.

The 144th Regiment will land at Lae in 5 days and start marching on Wau.
This will eliminate the last remaining allied stronghold on New Guinea and cut
of the only possible retreat base for the Port Moresby garrison.

Further reinforcements are arriving at Truk the following days.
Unfortunately we can¡¦t postpone the invasion and wait for these.

1 day
SS I-9

23.06

Troops are landing at Port Moresby.
The weather has been favorable with thunderstorms and rain, but lifted today.
Expecting enemy airstrikes tomorrow.

Will the US carriers intervene?
My two main CV groups are patrolling out of sight from enemy scout planes in the Coral Sea while the close support CV group is launching strikes at PM.
If the US carriers arrive from Noumea? - it should be possible to intercept and surprise them with superior force. Expecting 2 CV groups with the Hornet, Yorktown, Lexington and Enterprise. Scout planes have also reported a BB sighting of Noumea.

The 144th Regiment is now marching towards Wau.

24.06

Bombardment group closed the PM airfields, landing continue.
Troops are also landing at Lea Lea and will attack unopposed? today and cut of the retreat route towards Wau. New Guinea should be cleared of all enemy troops within 14 days.

Bombers from Australia bombed the invasion group today. Heavy CAP
didn¡¦t shoot down a single bomber¡Kstrange.
A single bomb hit and heavily damaged a destroyer.

It doesn¡¦t look like the US CV¡¦s will intervene - this was also my assumption since Recon reports only a single Bde at PM.

Seems like 4 enemy fighter squadrons are caught in PM. It will be a fine bonus and weaken the Australian CAP. He¡¦ll miss those when my Betties pound him ƒº

Since the outcome of this operation seems clear, I have to plan the next step. New engineer units will soon arrive and occupy Lunga. With the build up at Shortland, Vila, Russell isl and Lunga, I will have a chain of bases that can be protected from the rear.

In reality I only got 2 options: the invasion of Australia with the aim of securing Townsville or the occupation of New Caledonia. Both will secure an auto victory objective.
An invasion of Australia can be supported from New Guinea and the distance I have to travel is far shorter than the alternative. Damaged ships will have a hard time making it back and airgroups from damaged carriers will have nowhere to land.
On the other hand ¡V there are a lot of enemy airbases in Australia that can be troublesome.

Enemy CV¡¦s have been spotted, they¡¦re heading north inside the coral reef barrier.
Good, they will be vulnerable there without any room to maneuver.
I will place my CV¡¦s 7 hexes away from the probable destination of the US CV¡¦s ¡V Cairns. This should enable my strike planes to launch attacks from extreme range, without getting in range of his CV based strike planes.

Enemy CV¡¦s didn¡¦t move but stayed where I spotted them!!
First airbattles takes place with the CV groups 7 hexes apart.

Disappointing that my Kate bombers didn¡¦t score any hits on his CV¡¦s.
Only a single strike was launched, probably because of the long range and cloudy weather. On the other hand, his unescorted dive bombers got massacred!! At least half of his most valuable asset has been squandered. This gives me a unique opportunity to close in for the kill. Ignoring LBA¡¦s and closing the distance.

Success!! Lexington and Enterprise are wrecked by multiple hits.
Seems like one of his CV groups reacted towards me out of Brisbane port.
Enemy CA¡¦s are also hit hard together with a score of transports and minesweepers.
I¡¦m lucky as he didn¡¦t hit my CV¡¦s, only a CA receives a 1000lb bomb hit. It has been sent back to Gili Gili - > Rabaul.
Difficult decision, an entire fleet of enemy ships are scattering in front of my CV¡¦s.
Fuel situation very critical, red fuel status for the Akagi and Kaga.
Luck favors the bold, so I pursue his remaining CV, the Hornet. My airgroups are getting depleted and I¡¦m worried about his LBA¡¦s. The weather is lifting.

The Hornet has been overwhelmed and crippled, should sink anytime.
His LBA¡¦s came out in strength and my 3 CV TF¡¦s got divided into 2 groups.
The groups with most of my CV¡¦s took the heat and put up a respectable CAP. Light damage to the CVL Shoho and Zuiho. Another CA also took a hit. Again a lucky result for me. ¡V My big CV¡¦s are undamaged.
The airgroups are now depleted at 50% str, the LBA threat is getting unacceptable.
I have to withdraw out of LBA range to refuel. A fleet oiler got torpedoed!! Hope he doesn¡¦t hit anymore.
Wau is captured ¡V entire New Guinea is now in my hands. A small allied covering force form Lea Lea is stranded between PM and Way. Will be eliminated as soon as I catch up with them.

A strange silence settles over the battlefield.
My CV¡¦s are now refueling.
Only the Lexington still remains afloat. 3 CA¡¦s have also been reported sunk.
That¡¦s one resilient lady!! She took a great many hits.
The battle has resulted in a victory far beyond what I hoped for. All US CV¡¦s have
been eliminated and New Guinea has been secured. My own forces are mostly intact and have taken remarkably little damage. 1 AO has been sunk and 7-8 other ships damaged.
My airgroups have been decimated though, and will need some time to regain strength.
Then I will strike again!
New Caledonia or Australia itself is the next objective. I have to consider these options for a while. If I succeed with this, auto victory should be achieved.
Score is 3500 points in my favor already.

Not much happening. My 10 CV¡¦s have almost replenished their airgroups.
The 2 CVL¡¦ that got hit have repaired damage, only 15 and 16 system damage left.
That means that they will sail with their sisters in the next battle.
My ASW group have sunk 2 more subs and this turn a damaged DD was torpedoed
on its way into Noumea.
I¡¦m moving my troops out of New Guinea and back to Rabaul.
PM and all other outer bases are under air surveillance and is henceforth useless as
a staging base.

I¡¦ve decided not to invade Australia! It will be Noumea and New Caledonia.

Now as the decision is made, I¡¦m expanding my bases towards Santa Cruz and starting a deception campaign against Australia. If I can spread his forces thin, victory will almost certainly be mine ƒº

The troop ships are loading
100k men today ¡V tomorrow they will sail.
The most powerful invasion armada ever assembled consists of:

4 transport TF¡¦s with a 100 ships. AP¡¦s, escorts and minesweepers. 8 APD¡¦s provided the close support.
4 replenishment TF¡¦s with 10 tankers.

3 CV TF¡¦s with 7 CV¡¦s, 3 CVL¡¦s and 1 CVE + escorts totaling 45 ships carrying 512 planes.

3 surface TF¡¦s consisting of 45 ships including 4 BB¡¦s, 11 CA¡¦s, 6 CL¡¦s and 24 DD¡¦s

The ships will sail south from Shortland and not turn east until parallel with Noumea.
Hopefully the enemy will be unsure of where I¡¦m heading, Australia is still a possibility until the convoy turns east.

Recons indicate 4 regiments and various support elements at Noumea. It seems like Efate and Lunganville also got a garrison! Good, I don¡¦t think he got more than max 50k troops in Noumea. If my 110k can land, it will be captured.
Ships are also carrying 3 base forces, AA and coastal defense units.

Around 50 fighters and 50 bombers are based on Noumea, but I think more will arrive.
I think there are 3 airgroups from the damaged cv that he has sent back to Pearl. In addition there could be 2 CV¡¦s there.
His LBA¡¦s can damage quite a few of my ships, but he can never stop them. If I coordinate my attack ¡V he shouldn¡¦t be able to inflict more than 30% casualties.
Everything below 50% will be acceptable, even more if I can eliminate his surface and CV force.

Ok, it¡¦s beginning! I managed to sail down the Coral Sea and close in on New Caledonia before getting spotted. My long range fighters and a few Val¡¦s battled his CAP this first turn.

Transfered a Zero squadron from Port Moresby and onto the Kaga. It had room for another 27 planes after its Val complement got reduced in the first days fighting.
I got another 3 Zero squadrons to refill my carrier wings with.

It will take 3 more turns to close in on Noumea, the invasion fleet will leap into the port from one hex and spend most of its movement points to unload troops with.
During these 3 turns, my massive air strikes supported by bombers from Lunga should obliterate his CAP and surface fleet.

Confidence is high! This time nothing¡¦s going to stop the Empire from winning a decisive battle!

SPECIAL UPDATE

The CinC of the US South Pacific has retired.
Apparently the latest defeats and the prospects of New Caledonia being lost got to much for him.

Crocky is the new CinC and will try to save the US from a humiliating defeat.

After a quiet turn without action because of bad weather, everything exploded again this turn.
Again enemy dive bombers and torpedo bombers got slaughtered by my extremely heavy CAP, but this time low flying level bombers scored hits on my light carriers. Not a critical blow and hopefully the worst fires will be put out and enable them to continue to support the invasion.
My own airstrikes were efficient this turn. The BB North Carolina took multiple bomb and torpedo hits. Hopefully this will have weakened it enough to enable my surface forces to finish her. That is a very dangerous ship!

Troops landed on the hex just west of Noumea this turn and will cut of the retreat path.
A somewhat annoying misunderstanding caused a whole transportation TF to unload their troops together with my recon elements. Apparently the TF commander had received conflicting orders. This could make the capture of Noumea somewhat more prolonged and force my CV groups to stay put in the area for a few turns longer than planned.

Next turn the main landing force will land on Noumea.

Landings went well, 3 TF's bombarded Noumea 4 times.
Looks like the battleship has been sent back to Pearl?

Annoying that 2 surface TF's retreated northwards towards Rabaul after bombarding Noumea. Replenishment ships present and they are NEEDED there to protect the invasion force.
Fortunately one TF stayed put and saved the day.
It should really be possible to order them to stay and protect!!

Yep the battleship went back to Pearl along with most of the other vessels that had 40 + system damage........including a few that where in their 90s :) no point in gifting to many points to him he has enough already.....

Situation in Noumea aint looking good my squadrons are destroyed and the bases is a shambles the grunts are digging in and waiting for the inevitable assault from the Japanese troops ...

My Naval forces have basically retreated to Pearl apart from a CA a CL and 6 DDs who have advanced against the incoming masses in the hope of sinking a few APs and slowing him down ...

Time is my ally PzB is a long way from his bases and I still control Luganville and Efate a smile crosses my face every time a bomb hits or a Zero / Val goes down things he cant repair or replace easily.........

Overall I am confident that I can hold maybe not now by eventually I will prevail :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad weather prevented the fly guys from going up today.
3-4 APD's struck mines while helping the mine sweepers to clear the port.
The last US TF was dealt with by my destroyers. Only the occasional airstrikes to worry about now.
Tomo was captured and thereby cutting of the escape route from Noumea.
Next turn the army will attack. Combined assault strength at Noumea is now 1111 :D

One question for the rest of you:
Should it be possible to send severly damaged ships back to Pearl from Noumea while I'm having it under siege?
It isn't like there is a back door that they can silently slip out from...

Heavy losses, but expected as Noumea has been turned into one big bunker... All troops not unloaded yet, so the pressure will only increase. 4-5 more days to capture it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not all important for this game, but Crocky's suggestion about a retreat hex for units going back to Tokyo or Pearl is a must for the game in general!!
Besieged bases like Noumea shouldn't be able to receive troop reinforcements either....

Lost quite a few transports and lesser ships today as a cruiser TF appeared.. - but really not much I could do about it as rain prevented air strikes and it's just not possible to order the warships to stay and protect the transports.
Maybe a follow TF order will make em stay put?

Strange that such a perfect game as UV doesn't have such an elementary command as is needed here?

Well, fortifications reduced to 4! A few more attacks and things should start to happen?

As long as I can keep my troops supplied, I can still do it! In deliberate attacks, air and sea bombardments - US losses are bigger than mine.

Fuel is a concern, but hey - I don't come all the way from Tokyo without bringing half my tanker fleet.)

CHARGE!!

Considering whether I should go for Koumac or Basse-Poya instead as Noumea is being reinforced by air....
Could provide me with a base and supplies.
The reason I didn't do this to begin with was that time and casualties would lessen my chances to get Noumea itself.
