Well that is just great. I hate land combat, looks like he is going for a auto victory. Time to bomb Japan to the stone age. I have no chance to stop him Russia. The Soviets get no reinforcements for a long time. What can I do. I really do not want the game to end before 44. I want to play the whole thing out even if all of Asia is gone. I guess this means India will be safe until he is done crushing Russia. The question will be will he be able to stop me in the Pacific. He has maybe one or to light CV left. The question is can I get some bombers to Russi quick enough. The railmovement will mean he will crush me real quick. I do not care about losing russia in war terms, the thing that sucks is that he will get a lot of points from this. I hope after 43 he will want to go on and see what happens if he gets enough points (if this can be over ridden by someone). I will never give up and know at the moment I own the air and seas, but he owns the land. This game has also taught me that owning the land is the most important thing in this game. Massed bomber attacks on ground troops does nothing in this game. It does not even slow down his troops at all.

I don't think an "auto victory" is possible for Japan in 1943. Maybe in 1944 with the 3-1 advantage. If most of the islands hold out and Siberia and India are captured, who knows. Basically, I don't think this is possible because of the high number of air and ship losses I've suffered. The key question is if I can hold off 2-1 "auto victory" for the Allies in 1945. If Japan is holding all of Asia then you'll have to invade Japan to get a win.
Also the bombers do kill ground troops. However the numbers aren't that much. Even if you kill 200 men per day that's only 73,000 per year. Big deal. There are probably 250,000 boys turning 18 each year that I can recruit from. This is war.

RE: Soviets Join the War
Zeta, looking forward to seeing your mid-Pacific offensive take shape. Christmas Island was a good first start.
Considering the depleted condition of the Japanese battle fleet, is it time to launch a series of deep penetration carrier sweeps to disrupt his shipping and perhaps begin the neutralization of his island based air forces? It seems like you should be able to go about anywhere you want to now (at least on the oceans).
Perhaps now is the time to revisit some of the prior discussions about defending Russia? As I recall, there are plenty of reasons why it won't be a Japanese cakewalk so don't despair too quickly!

Is it 4 to 1 in 43 or 3 to 1. I just wish I could kill more of your troops with air attack. You will run over Russia pretty quick, did you cross on the last turn, I did not even look at the Intelligence screen. I figure that I was going to have to go to Japan for awhile now. Your only problem is India is going to be harder to take if you go to Russia first. I have rebulit most of the Army I took out of Burma. I still do not think it will hold all of the Kwangtung and Chinese armies though.

Ok i have some questions after reading the game so far:
1)-Wasnt Hirohito's plan supposed to start as early as possible with SOV while on the same time make small operations in the ocean?
2)-How it is possible bombardment attacks to result in such a low casualty numbers?Several times when this type is initiated i see more that 200 art. pieces kill such a pathetic low number of troops(224 guns=>34 casualties).Isnt that wrong?
3)-In general i dont see in the AARs written any mention at all to industry production.Do you plan to tell us how your economy goes in order to give more in depth info since it is important(i think)to know how industry goes depending on the war overall picture?

Japanese artillery isn't very good but the Allies have better weapons. Not sure of the exact dynamics of the combat model though. I would guess that bombardments of infantry don't do much damage vs. artillery used against attacking infantry.

RE: Soviets Join the War
Using art. pieces to bombard the enemy means throwing a large number of rounds-bombs and obviously killing some personel. Now lets take for example the last such attack given by WITP_DUDE.Now he uses 224 guns with result of 10 YES 10 dead japs.
Now even if its piece fires only 1 bomb(art. bombardment means every art. piece fires dozens of bombs)it takes 22.4 art. rounds to kill 1 man.Now am i the only one thinking it as unrealistic? And this is if every gun fires only 1 which simply has no logic since no one has ever initiated bombardment attack by firing 1 round per gun especially since art. barrage is used only by supplied units.
Now if in WiTP bombardment attack means each guns firing 10 round then the stats goes to 224 round to kill a "ubersoldat" Japanese(nationality really doesnt matter it is similar with Jap. bombardment attack).
Keep in mind that WW2 bombardment attack means more than 10 round per gun which means that round per dead ratio gets even more ridicoulous.
BTW art. is and was the number 1 reason for combat casualties since last 100 years and certainly in WW2.
Bye.

Since the infantry isn't attacking there are likely in a stronger defensive position. There were some much bigger bombardments though, check back around page 18 or so:
You have to ask Zeta about what kind of artillery guns he is using in the different situations. If you want to know about how the numbers are determined, you have to ask one of the programmers.

I've noticed and I guess it is programmed in - the more a unit is attacked, the less likely it is to take casualties, even from the same amount (or increasing amount) of force. The first time it is hit, there are pretty bad casualties. The next time, hitting with the same force (be it sea bombardment, artillery, air bombardment) - the unit takes fewer casualties. I think this is the computer's way of simulating battle hardening. The troops know the sound of incoming, and know to go ground.

There is the experience level. Also disruption is another thing to look at.

Hirohito has proposed several plans for the Japanese in WiTP. This game is based on the first one his publically proposed, a massive assault east to wipe out the US Navy and capture a line of islands for defense as far east as possible (Anchorage south thru Hawaii to New Zealand IIRC) before moving on the SRA.
This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.

RE: Soviets Join the War
1st of all thanks a lot WITP_Dude for the info so far.
Now back to our point. In 1 of the bombardment example the ratio guns/dead was 224/10 or 22.4 guns (firing a art. bombardment)for every dead.
In the Dude's offered one there was a ratio of 1113/1784 plus a vehicle. This is more or less a 1/1.5 guns/dead ratio.
Now i am asking again without wanting to offend somebody,am i the only one who thinks that this is a very very low ratio of dead men and vehicles destroyed(ony 1 for 1113 guns!!!!!)per weapons used?
Art. bombardment means constant shell fire over enemy positions which before the bombardment have been pinpointed by the enemy as good as possible since such an act is preparatory for an direct attack and has as a purpose to soften enemy defence before main force marches in.
Now remember each gun fires shells.Lots of if i want to be accurate.I dont know how exactly the dev. team has figured it out but in case that the bombardment is 10 rounds per gun(which is a very small number to be realisitc)it means that the ratio shels/dead are:224/dead for the 1st example and 15/dead(approx) for the 2nd.Now do you really beliave that these numbers are realistic for WW2 Pacific front?
Remember we arent talking about naval preparatory fire against fortified enemy infantry before landing. We talk for 2 armies in fixed positions viewing each other from the opposite direction and in close distance to help for an accurate aiming.
So has anybody at all mentioned this as weired?Because after all i am not a WW2 art. specialist but from what i know and have read this seems pretty much worthless.1113 guns firing a bombardment to kill only 1784 and 1 vehicle simply isnt logical enought.

RE: Soviets Join the War
You have to realize 1700 represents almost 1% of the total forces present on the battlefield. That's a high price for just one day of "bombardments" without supporting infantry attacks. In reality most of the guns won't be able to engage in bombardments either. Each hex represents 3600 square miles so most of the guns aren't going to be in a position where they can easily hit infantry.
