Dude vs Zeta - Hirohito Style

Post by WiTP_Dude »

This is the AAR of my match vs Zeta16. I am the Japanese and will attempt to bypass the PI and Malay initially and go for other, more far out targets. In China, there will be a house rule in effect to make the situation a little more historical. I will stay on the defensive for several days so the Chinese can get organized and better prepared.

In the initial going I have sent every carrier, scout crusier, and seaplane tender on port attacks to destroy the Allied fleet. Air losses are high but five battleships and several submarines are sunk. High amounts of damage likely in many other ships as well.

A few landings also take place across the map. Palmyra, a key forward atoll near Hawaii, is taken on the first day. Most of my bigger units are still in transports moving toward their landing sites.

He kick my butt on the first two days. It was kinda painful to watch. He is every where and I have little to use at this point. He totally killed my fleet at Pearl, and hurt the other ports real bad, it will take me several turns to start forming a defense. Since this the first time I have played more than one day turns, does anyone have an idea how to play it different than one day turns. Also two day turns really help the Japanese when they are going all out, the allies kinda have to sit there and take it. We set it up that I did not enter any orders for the first turn.

The second day attacks pretty much came up empty. I sunk five battleships at Pearl on the 7th but none the next day. Singapore and Manilla also recovered their defenses and kept most of their force intact. The Prince of Wales and Repulse will survive to fight another day.

note to self...

as allies, avoid two day turns till much later in the war.

I wonder if he is now moving on Alaska and India per the plan? This will be interesting.

Hi, Yes on 1 day turns the Japanese plan does not do as well. The Japanese can even be hurt on 1 day turns. I think it is silly to use this plan and use multi day turns. The ALlied units just sat for 2 days? Yeah

2 and 3 day turns are TOUGH.

Knavey and I used to play them in UV. The advantage is that it move the game along quickly, and a coveted CV that is due in 30 days, is only 10 turns away, instead of 30. There's also the "hands off" sort of feel, that you're giving orders, and hopeing your guys get it right. However...

This can be VERY dangerous. What happens is (for either side), you plan your invasions to be at the edge of LBA range at the start of your turn. Then set your TF to run in, and unload. They now have 3 days to do so, before your opponent can react. Or what also happens is, you do something collossally stupid, and you can't get the he11 outta Dodge for 3 days (by which time, you're dead).

Another drawback is that your aircraft can't transfer bases except for every 3 days (so you effectively lose 2 bounces).

It used to be a problem in UV with a fatigue issue, and your pilots would litterally fly themselves to death over the 3 days. But this has been corrected in WitP.

Playing 3 day turns is tough. But you get used to it. Takes more planning, and a LOT more second-guessing (hopefully correctly) of were that TF is going, that is loitering just outside of LBA range.

Good luck with this!

Hi, I guess you have to take the good with the bad. Myself I am in no hurry. I'd rather spend 3 years playing the war right then finishing in 1 year but having the results tilted by being unable to react for 3 days at a time. 3 days is a long time for a carrier battle or amph landing to go on before the player can intervene with common sense orders.
Turn 1 in this game is an excellent example. Not only do the Japanese get surprise attacks on PH they get them at Manila and Singapore many hours later where it is simply impossible to say they would have gotten surprise. And then they get all these attacks a second day as well.
A plan has no merit in my mind if it requires one player to exploit the system to work.
In a 1 day turn game with not silly business at Manila or Singapore this plan will begin suffering huge loss on day 2.
I'll even make room for 1 more PBEM game to show the difference 1 day turns and no super Japanese make.
The Japanese plan is to take forward bases as soon as possible. It does not work. The Japanese player will be insane by April 42.

I would never claim that I make the perfect Japanese plans or the best Japanese plan. I do know how to count and how to add and subtract. My plans always confine themselves to what I can supply. I plan for refitting and repair of ships. For rest and refit and training of LCU I give the units time to get to 100 for future objectives outside the SRA where the Allied units will be stronger and better prepared. (Japan cannot dump unready units in hexes where prepared full size Allied units are waiting)

There are a horde of objections to this plan. Foremeost for me is it cannot be supported logisticly and it does not attain the primary objectives of Japans going to war in the first place. It does not provide the Japanese economy with a secure supply of resource and oil but at the same time it requires an increased expenditure of supply and fuel. When you take a number and subtract that number from a smaller number..................................

Actually, has anyone tried altering the number of days per turn, in mid-game? I hadn't actually thot to try. Obviously, multi-day turns (esp) the for the first, can have catastrophic consequences. But what if you had 1-day turn for turns 1 and 2 (or whatever). And then went to 2-day turns? Can you even do that?

2 day turns weren't so horribly bad when we did them. The "run in and unload exploit" wasn't as dramatic; certainly managable. So could you play 1 day turns for the fist turn, and then switch the PBEM setting 2 day turns...?

But yes, in our current Team PBEM game, Knavey and I vs. LtFighter and KBullard, we're only playing 1-day turns.

Hi, Yes on 1 day turns the Japanese plan does not do as well. The Japanese can even be hurt on 1 day turns. I think it is silly to use this plan and use multi day turns. The ALlied units just sat for 2 days? Yeah

[Rant]

Funny no one has mentioned the problem of Japanese ridiculus pre-war deployments! Most of the units are based on Formosa and Hainan, preparing for invasions of the Philippines Islands and Malay. This means that have to travel many thousands of miles to get to their landing sites. Now, if they were based in Japan, Truk, Palau, Saipan, and Kwajalein, they would be thousands of miles closer to where they need to go. So, in effect, the Allies get a couple of extra weeks to setup their defenses that they should get.

But no, let's focus on the additional submarine and destroyer that got sunk due to 2-day turns!

[/Rant]

[/Rant]

Hi, There are 3 count them 3 divisions of Japanese troops not counting smaller formations in Japan on turn 1. The South Sea Detacthment is at Bonin and can be redirected. There are plenty of troops. The troops at Formosa and Taan can be used to cut off SRA while Palau (A Bde) heads towards South Pacific.

My normal plan has a Bde that begins at Saigon landing on Wake. I don't think anyone expects the Japanese to land on these advances bases on turn 1. The silliness of turn 1 is Japan getting multiple days of surprise when in history she had a few hours. The 2nd strike at PH encounteredd strong AA fire. Most of the Japanese loss at PH were from 2nd Strike.

Give me a break! If your going to be a "mod", you don't need to make these kind of cases to prove your point. 1 of the divisions doesn't have any boats, so this is going to delay them by several days. 2 divisions are not enough for all the targets. 5 divisions is not enough.

If the Japanese were actually going to do this plan, they would have eight divisions plus several brigades in Japan and the Central Pacific. The fact that there is 2 divisions and a few smaller units is not a sound argument. The fact is that most of my units are in Saigon, Hainan, and Formosa, several thousand miles away from the action. This is obviously of no benefit to me for executing "Operation Hirohito".

I sunk all five battleships on the first strike. Nothing after that. So the Allies got to kill a dozen or so pilots at no cost. Same thing at Manilla, the vast majority of losses came on the first strike.

Hi, One of the first PBEM AAR I did with Kid in testing was plan just like this. I captured Midway Johnson Palmyra, Baker, Canton all on turn 1 or turn 2. I had no plan to invade PH since earlier test had resulted in my losing 1/3 of the IJN and every transport used.

None of these bases have allied garrisons except a few baseforce and Midways defense unit. Japan does not need to use divison landings. Break up the Divison at Osaka. Use the South Sea Detachment There are strong SNLF/Naval Guard units at Kwajalean.
You don't need a lot of force to take the bases and as long as you get 1/3 Div units to them in first 2 weeks they can be held.
All units can be in place in first 30 days and that is plenty fast enough. The problem is not how fast Japan can take bases but whether once taken they can be maintained. They are easy to take and Japan has troops to place on them for short term defense.

My problem with the plan in general is how does any of this equate to "Lawerence, Stonewall or Sun Tzu"? It is simply a land grab that converts into static defense and then it is the Allied player not the Japanese who does all the hit and runs. These early base grabs turn into targets before mid 1942. The IJN will wear it's self out trying to defend them. Since that is the purpose of this AAR I just want to make my predictions early on and see how well my calculations have been done. Japan will be suffering a servere long term supply shortage by march 1942. This plan does nothing to solve that crisis and much to magnify it.

Remember, Hirohito planned to take Hawaii, New Zealand, several more islands, ect. I'm not planning to invade Malay or the PI in any major way so having all those units in Southeast Asia is not necessary.

Well days 3 and 4 saw my forces hit back just a little bit. Still trying to get things moved all over the place and to stay out of the way of his carriers until he thinks he is safe. It hurts not getting air units for several weeks, and then how to get them to Pearl, maybe I will use the Sara for that. If he doesn't come for the Phi. and DEI quick I think they will make great bases once I start getting stuff. It may take longer to get to OZ with his new bases but what is a couple of weeks when OZ and DEI are great bases behind his front. The plan for the first three or so weeks is to hold one and wear his force in the Central Pacific down and then counter attack. I am still debating wether to take Conservitive or Attack appoarch in the first year of the war?

I think I may just eat some chicken wings instead.
