RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/21/41 - COMPRESSED
The Animals were very happy with the turn. At first glance, you might think they were right, but what didn’t happen is more important: The stranglehold on the Chinese “Cauldron” was not broken, and indeed the IJA retreated to strengthen the Chinese hold. A rescue ship to try to retrieve the 6th Indian Brigade was not found or attacked. And several brigades retreating towards Singapore were able to get past the Japanese roadblock.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Recently, a Thead IJN player (not in this game, but commenting on it) claimed “IJN doesn't run out of merchies. Not by onesies and twosies “ (referring to the current loss of merchant ships in the game.)
Let us examine that premise:
At the beginning of this CHS scenario, the IJN has
761 AKs
287 APs
69 TKs
technically AOs are not “merchies”, but let us throw them into the mix
26 AOs
The Japanese are reinforced with
464 AKs
97 APs
84 TKs
18 AOs
This gives a total of
1225 AKs
384 APs
153 TKs
44 AOs
- - - - - - -
1806 “Merchants”
Since there are 25 days in 1941, and 1460 days in 1942 - 1945 = 1485 days, (let’s ignore 1946) losing merchant ships at an average of 1.5 per day (“onesies and twosies”) will run them out of ships well before the end of the game... specifically, even if they had ALL merchants available before the end of the game, they would run out of ships in 1204 days , which is in the first quarter of 1945.
This assumes that the IJN doesn’t convert any AKs into ARs, etc. Of course, the IJN can move some supplies (but not oil, resources, i think) by AEs, DDs, APDs, etc., but the Japanse economy should collapse well before all the merchants are totally sunk.
Also, please note i don’t consider AGs merchant vessels.

Great summary Rob. Something to aim for.
Well, we are currently attacking something like 3 merchies per day with submarines- most of them getting away due to torpedo failures ("running deep", warhead malfunctions, etc.) - if we could double the rate of destruction (with more subs, better torpedoes) to say 3 per day after 1 year (Jan 1943 - when i think the torps get somewhat better (i'll have to check this)) then, we would have sunk 1.5 x (25 +365) ships = 547.5 ships (call it 547), leaving 1259 merchant ships... and if we can sink these at 3 per day, the IJN runs out of merchants in an additional 420 days - i.e. - 1st quarter of 1944. Of course, i should mention not ALL these merchants are being sunk by subs...
Of course, there will be diminishing returns i think as the number of potential targets decreases, the IJN takes sterner ASW measures, etc.
But, the submarine campaign is off to a good start, i think... kudos to you, Adm. Speedy!!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/23/41 - COMPRESSED AND ABRIDGED
The boring mine actions (where nothing much happens) have been removed from the AAR.
The Japanese apparently realized that the Cauldron was cut off from supply, and moved a division over to break the siege. Clark Field is hammered, and has only one fort left. The ship sent to rescue the British troops at Alor Star didn’t load anyone, and now needs to be rescued itself.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Hi all,
Report from CIC US Armed Forces - 24th December 1941
---------------------------------------
Over the past few days little has happened for the US CIC.
A few sub attacks in the SRA here and there with reported torpedo failures or inexperienced crews resulting in poor performance.
All 4 x US CV's are at PH now. They will await to be fully equipped with the new F4F4 Wildcat and to know the location of KB before venturing out somewhere.
100K of fuel and 150K of supply is on its way in 4 convoys to Niceguy in the Aus region. All convoys are east of PH for now with a couple of enemy I-Boats spotted by Catalinas ahead to the SW.
My main area of concern for now is the Aleutians. Adak Island has been invaded and there are few forces in this region to stop the Japanese at present. I have a mixed PC/PG/MSW/AVD force trying to attack enemy shipping at Adak tomorrow. I have a BF en route to Cold Bay and 40,000 tonnes of supply on the way.
Other plans for the next few days include the arrival/sending of 4-8 air groups of fighters and bombers from Alaska/WC to this region. I also plan to send a SC TF from WC to the region. Maybe evening comprising a repairing USN BB at Seattle. We'll see.............

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/25/41 – Compressed
A very Merry Christmas - unless you happen to be on a sinking ship (two from each side went down), or at Pontianak, or lived on Adak, or in Johore Bahru, or various places in China... let’s see what happened today. I am trying a new experiment and linking the AAR to a wide-scale map below ... the number on the AAR hopefully corresponds to the map number.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) The invasion of Adak continues... we succeeded in slowing down the conquest of Adak a bit by flying in troops, shooting up the invasion landing (last turn) and then flying them out... it also had the extra benefit that the Animals shot up the undefended base, and now will have to use supplies to fix it:

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
OK - here is the Allied Intel screen for 12/26/41 - i shall be annotating it later on today, so this is temporary:
EDIT: OK - here is the annotated screen. We Allies lost 324 points on bases... but this appears to be a temporary setback in that Pearl Harbor and other bases are low on supplies right now, i think and this probably suppressed the base score. Otherwise we lost about 20 odd points on the three bases.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/26/41 - COMPRESSED
This turn is the first turn 1.806 has been installed - unfortunately, I am not sure some of the advertised upgrades are working, specifically the new minesweeping routines. I have been having severe problems sweeping mines in Columbo, and when I ran the turn under 1.804, some of the mines got swept up. However, there is a noticeable LACK of mine sweeping in Columbo in this AAR which was run under 1.806...
Other than that, this was a relatively slow turn... undefended Dili fell to another paratroop assault, and undefended Clark Field fell to the Animals.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Some more details about the past turn: it was apparently slow in pace because the entire northern third of the map is socked in by bad weather, limiting air ops.
The supply situation in the PI has gotten significantly worse since 30000 tons of supply did not shift with our troops (in 2 days) and so were captured by the advancing animals...[:@] This has caused supplies shortages throughout Luzon, and so has drastically caused a downward shift in points for bases... i guess we should learn to get used to the loss of points, though: with the speed of the advance and lack of supplies, things are not looking terribly optimistic for a prolonged PI defense.
