RE: Managing the Japanese Merchant Fleet
ragrding the xAKL to PB conversion i wasn't thinking of them all at once. 2-3 a month should be considered though.
thanks for the clarification regarding the APDs, another conversion that should kick off right from the start.

Can you wage an effective war without adding any ships? And just convert on a needs basis as the war drags on?
It seems that APs are needed, but you cant convert anything to them...
APs are not the answer to moving resources/oil/fuel. They help support invasions, which decrease in importance as the war drags on. Anyway, you begin with 51 APs and gain an additional 11 in reinforcements. Your xAKs are your workhorses, both as cargo carriers and as personnel transports. I haven't done an exaustive analysis of what is really needed, but I suspect we'll need as many as we can get. Same with TKs.

Why will it take months?
I wouldn't convert any PB to transport if not absolutly necessary. Every ship lost because of lacking escort will be bigger than the small amount of caro space gained by converting PBs zu transports.
Well, the at-start situation is thus:
To'su: 38 xAKLs, 21 AMc's, 18 xACMs (can't be converted back), and 34 xPBs
Ansyu: 35 xPBs
Kiso: 1 xAKL, 14 xACM, 18 xPBs
If we want most or all to be xPBs, there are a LOT of conversions to be made (up to 74 all told). Also, to convert a To'su to an xPB needs a size 10 shipyard.
So, depending on initial deployment, if they are part of initial invasion forces, etc., the conversion process might take a few months. Note that I am NOT saying the process should be delayed, quite the contrary, I think it should be expedited, but it will not be instantaneous and, most likely, we will use some of those xAKLs as cargo haulers before converting them to xPBs because, well... because they are there

The discussions on fuel efficiency for cargo capacity, conversions and such... it reminds me of a railroad simulator more than War in the Pacific. [:D]

Can ships burn crude oil directly instead of converted fuel oil?
This was done in 44 when no refinery facilities were available to the Japanese in e.g. Borneo.
Ships smoked like coalers and engines were damaged - but better than using oars.

RE: Managing the Japanese Merchant Fleet
The last two hours, I made a list with all civilian and auxiliary military ships. I can now say clearly, which ship should be converted to ACM, AS, AR etc... and which to convert would be a waste of cargo space and endurance...
I really had to this. My national pride as German demands that I am the most systematic here. I can't leave this without a fight to americans! [:-] [;)]

ROFL!!!
Now I know where I got my analitical streak from... one of my ancestors, Friedrich von Seyffert, was a Prussian officer who fought against Napoleon at Waterloo... never had considered that attention to detail in wargaming came from him... hmm...

No. Fuel only.

When Grigsby gets War in the East published, you'll have to work on making interchangeable parts for Pzkw II's, III's, IV's and V's. Compared to that, Japanese shipping is easy. [:)]

Johann Gottfried von Herder's "national spirit" and "national soul" seems to exist despit his prooves have been confuted. While he thought that the peoples itself create folksongs, that they come out of the people itself without a creater, most of them can be tracked down to a single person.ORIGINAL: Kitakami

Still, peoples are different. The German love for details is a fact which can be seen e.g. at computer games. Games like the Anno-series are bestsellers in Germany and by far don't achieve that success in other countrys.

The file isn't complete, yet. I still have to add the cargo space for all to finish it. Some more work... [>:]

RE: Managing the Japanese Merchant Fleet
OK, further observations:
I don't know whether they are going to change this, but by now, the mines are far too few. Useing all minelayers would mean one can only use them once evers 3-4 months (IIRC). Consequently, it makes sense to reduce the number of CMs and CMcs. Sokuten e.g. make a fair short range escort.
As there are so few mines, minetender will be very important tu assure that at least the few layed mines will stay in place.
I'm expanding the list with TKs, AOs and all kinds of escorts as some freighters can convert to CMs while CMs can convert to E. To tell which class is best suited for which duty, all these classes have to be in one list... [>:]

Ok, the list is done 207 different ships including all escorts, SC, PB, etc. and destroyers
Cargo, endurance, speed, number available/building, tonnage, ASW and AA (only if the ship has ASW).
To do:
- fuel consumption per cargo
- fuel consumption per ASW-point/mile
- torpedocapacity of DD/TB compared with possible ASW as escort and possible cargo as APD
- torpedocapacity of DD/TB compared with the other DD/TBs ASW/AA to know which are the boats that can be easily risked...
Also thinkable:
- fuel consumption per mine layed

historiker was, is and will be my dear opponent in many many battles before, now and in the future.[:D]
he complains all the time that although he knows it better, he repeats the same mistakes again and again simply because he is a little bit lazy when it comes to micromanagement of the game. it seems that his systematic german nature stopps when it comes to this part of the game which i am happy about, because otherwiese, he would kick my ass.[:D]
by the way: hand me over your list or i will bomb tokyo into the stone age in our next game, torsten.[;)]

Hehe, that's the point. Way too often I'm bored doing the turn and click "End turn" instead of doing the things that are left to do.
Giveing you the list will make Tokyo secure from any attack in our future grand campaign game? [:D]
