New Associations and the Initial Draft

Post by Nukester »

Sitting Duck explained to me how I can get a historical league going without having to go through and change all the names (like when doing it through PureSim Classic). Unfortunatly, it was in the live chatroom, and I dont remember how he said to do it.

Im pretty sure he said to start a new league in the year that I want to start in, using the Historical Career mode, saving that as a template, then starting a new league using that template.

Ive done that a dozen times, but I can not get a 1986 league started that way and get an initial draft. Ive been able to get a draft going with a 1903 league that way though.

Im confused as to why I cant get this to work. I start a Historical Career mode league in 1986, letting the game do its thing as far as setting up the association. I cant actually save the league as a template until the rosters are filled and spring training is complete. No problem.

Then I start a new league using the first one as a template, and when it asks if I want to create a new pool or import player to the correct team, I choose "new pool". The association gets created, and the players import from the database. This is where I get confused........When the league starts, it says that the initial draft is ready to be run, and under that it says, in bold, to click there to import the 1986 rosters. When I import the rosters, everyone goes on the correct team, and I dont get an initial draft.

Any help as to what I might be doing wrong would be very much appreciated. To sit through the league being setup, only to not have it the way I want it, is frustrating as all heck, when doing it over and over and over

Build the 1986 league and let PSBB import the teams.

Proceed through the spring and save it as a template.

Then start a new assn and use this template to set it up.  You will be asked what you want to name the assn and also if you want to keep the same rosters or start a draft pool of existing players.

Lemme know if you need any more help.

Thanks

Thats what Ive been doing, but when the 2nd league is built, on the home page, on the top left, it says that the league is ready for the initial draft, but that is not clickable. Under that it says "Click here to import 1986 rosters". I assume I have to do that because the "players" list is empty (or if there are players listed, I cant figure out how to actually start the draft). If I click on the import rosters link, everyone goes to the correct teams.

I know I got a 1903 league going this way, but cant seem to get this 1986 one going [:)]

Thats what Im saying :)

Ive sat here while these 1600 players imported more times than I care to say.

I see that under the option for importing to real teams or create player pool, there is a little blurb about some associations not allowing an initial draft. Do you know what kind of leagues that would be ?

Not at all.  In fact, I never read anything like that, but mainly because I have an issue with reading everything all the way through.  [8|]

I'll give a thought on it.

Do you think it might be because the league has already gone through the spring training?  But that would be odd because your other league, that you got to work, went through spring training before being made a workable template, correct?  [&:]

Im clueless. I just tried the 1903 league again, and couldnt get the initial draft to start. Everyone loaded to their correct teams again. So far, Ive got to say my biggest gripe about the game is being unable to start a league with an initial draft, without going through a million hoops to get it done.

Im pretty sure that the one league I was able to get this done with had to go through spring training in order to be able to mke a template out of the first league. I cant think of any other way to do it. Everytime I choose to put the players into a pool, they end up getting placed on the correct teams anyway, once the 2nd league is created and is populated with players

I've never tried a draft league template using the Historical Roster option.  Only used the PS Classic mode, which is fine with me.

I think it's the same thing I'm trying to do - Start a career in a year (ex. 1986) with all the cities and team names loaded, but then be able to do a fantasy draft instead of having all the players assigned to their original teams.  I know we can do single seasons in Sandbox, but I'm trying to use the career option.

Thanks.

Right, I would like to be able to start a historical league with an initial draft, and also with the correct team names loaded. The only way Ive been able to get a league going with an initial draft (from the DB, not fictional) is to do it in PureSim Classic mode, but then you have to change all of the team names around from fictional names.

I thought I was able to once get a 1903 league going with a draft, by creating a historical career league, saving it as a template, then creating a different league using that as a template. I cant reproduce that again. All of the leagues start out with players imported to the correct team. When the league starts, in the top left corner, it says that the league is ready for the draft, but it is not "clickable". Under that it says in bold to click to import the rosters, and it puts the players on the correct teams.

OK, guys, I know what you want, but I don't have a problem with constructing a historical draft league using Pure Sim Classic. I suppose it's the patience factor.

Whether it's 1946 or 1986 or 1901, if you wanna do it right, you gotta set it up yourself.   It's worth the effort.    You can set historical ballparks and logos and game music and skins and so forth.

To be honest, I think a gamer SHOULD have to put a little work into customizing your game experience.   A labor of love doesn't feel like work, anyway.   I get the impression that some gamers expect everything to be handed to them on a platter.  I disagree with that notion.

The tools are there, so use them.   If you want customized draft templates, heck, you have guys that will do it for you.

Jeez, what season do you want?  I'LL do it, if it's too much for you.  All you gotta do is ask via PM or e-mail.

However, I strongly suggest that you do it on your own.

I dont have a problem changing the names either, but it would save alot of time if we didnt have to. The thing is, I like to do alot of drafts and sims over and over, so saving the league as atemplate wouldnt do. I would like to be able to import a season and jump right into a draft, instead of importing players, changing team names, running a draft, creating another league, import players, change team names, run draft, rinse and repeat.

if I want to run through 5 drafts to see how things shake out, I currently have to change team names 5 times. After dozens of drafts, that time adds up.

I guess one way out of that would be to change the names once, then just before the draft, quit the game and make a copy of the league. That would help out for one season, but we still would have to change the names that one initial time for each different year and keep a copy of that league around just incase we want to redraft from that same year. Not mindboggling, but still time consuming, and it takes up alot more space keeping a copy of every year around.

I still don't understand why you can't do what you want, I don't know if I am just missing something, but the following process should work fine:

1. Create a PureSim Classic Association

2. On the next screen "Association Customization Options" select "Seed Association with Real Major League Players" and choose the year of players you want to use.

3. Run the draft, then before playing any games make any additonal team / region / logo edits

4. Go to the home screen of the association and choose the "Click here to save this association as a template" option.

5. At this point you have a ready-built association template you can use to start from when creating a future association.

To use the template:

1. Create a new association

2. Select the "Use a PureSim 2007 ready-made association template"

3. Choose the template you just created above from the dropdown

4. Another screen will pop up that allows you to give the new assn a name, and let you optionally generate a new pool of players (If you seeded with real players then the generate new pool feature will actually re-import the real players and place them in the draft pool, if the assn template was a fictional assn, then a whole new set of fictional players will be generated.) Or, you can choose the "Use existing rosters option"

I hope this makes sense :)

Or, you can choose the "Use existing rosters option"

Everything goes as planned up to this point. On the screen that asks whether to generate a new pool or add players to the correct roster, even if I choose to create a new pool, when the league actually gets created, in the top left side of the home screen, it says on top that the league is ready for the draft. However, that text is not "clickable" and I have no idea how else to start the draft.

Under that text, there is another line that says to click there to import the players for that season. If I click that, everyone goes to the correct team.

Ive followed your instructions a bunch of times (same instructions Sitting Duck gave me), and I think I was only able to get a draft going once out of probably a dozen times. I was able to once get a 1903 draft going this way, but have not been able to get a 1986 league going this way.

Ok, I see one difference. I was using the "historical career" option to create the first league, not the PureSim Classic mode.

Even doing it your way, you would need to keep a template of every season you might want to use for an initial draft. Hard ? No, but it is time consuming. Plus, you still need to change those darn names once, before saving as a template.

I guess what Im saying is that if you could use the historical career mode, but have an option to dump everyone into a pool for a draft, it would save the time spent redoing all of the team names that once, and also save you from having to keep a template of every season you might want to do an initial draft for.

Say I want to do an initial draft for a 1903 league. Id have to start the league as a PureSim classic league, and change 16 team names. No problem. Do that and save the league as a template to use as the actual league to be drafted. But then lets say I want to do a draft in 1986. Id start a 1986 PureSim Classic league and change 26 team names, save as a template, etc. Then I want to do a 2000 league with a draft. Id start a 2000 PureSim Classic league, and change 30 team names, save as a template, etc.....thats 72 team names that had to be changed to get the 3 drafts going. That gets extremely annoying, plus its 3 extra template "saves" that need to be on the PC.

I fully understand your problem, Nukester.  For each initial draft year, you need to create a new setup from scratch.

Yes, there needs to be a different point at which to create the basic team template, or if Shaun gives us a range choice of "draft years" after the empty teams are created.

This way, you'd need only one template for a 16 team draft association, and others for 24 or 30 teams or whatever.

Is this doable, Shaun?

Maybe an option during PureSim Classic mode to pull in correct team names and cities or to use fictional ones, instead of defaulting to the fictional ones. The game is pulling the players in from the database, and the team names and cities are in the database, so it should be doable.

I understand that this may be to big for this version, but it sure would be a huge timesaver for the next version (but if Shaun got it into this version, I would kiss him [;)])

OK, at least now I understand the issue now. Thanks. I'm not sure when this will make it in, but I have added it to the list.
