Should I wait?

Post by grraven2004 »

A friend and I are going to get this game. With the problems I'm seeing with the current version is it playable now or should we wait until the next patch comes out?

Thanks

The game is definitely "playable" - the guys who are finding the bugs and arguing over databases n' stuff are all really "pro's" at this game. I'm afraid that most of what they find a newb wouldn't even realize was a problem!

Even that buggy new patch, I'm told, has lots of good fixes for the basic game. It has problems with multi-player so... proceed according to your own tastes (or do dual installs with one for Multi-player and one for single).

Remember, you can get the game and have fun with it now and the patches will be out there eventually. Matrix doesn't abandon their games... you are in no danger of losing your money due to lack of support. Any bugs, will be fixed, I have no doubt about that.

I do have doubts about the Harpoon community ever being at peace with itself though. [:D][:D][:D]

Buy the game! Enjoy! Patch later!

My old Piczo site seems to be gone, so no more Navajo Nation pics :(

Rhonda is exceptionally well suited to answering from the perspective of a newbie. However, I will disagree just a bit with her. [;)]

For the most part, IMO, the basic game (v3.7.0) is functional. The definition of functional being used here is, "Few, if any, CTDs." If that is satisfactory to a purchaser, then this game is ready for you! [:)]

However, I feel that there are a number of bugs that make the game not behave in the manner that the publishers detailed in their manual. The biggest one, IMO, is the one labelled Target List Bug. A quick example of why this is a problem is to imagine a flight of B-52s on a mission with cruise missiles. Instead of attacking the primary targets like bunkers, hangars, and other vital facilities, the bombers unload all their ordnance on the nearest hotels, restaurants, and other civilian structures.

So, if you are attacked by the AI, it usually turns out that it will be easily defeated. The game will not crash (usually). If this is sufficient for you, then you might want to go ahead and purchase, now.

If you are specifically seeking MP play with your friend, just remember NOT to install the Beta 3.7.1 patch. I makes ALL MP play result in CTDs. It is UNPLAYABLE, IMO. Stick with 3.7.0 and you will get a modicum of MP playability. However, there are still more than a few bugs that will disrupt your MP sessions. i.e. you might get 1/2 way through a scen and it just ends on you. [:@]

Harpoon is fine. There are somethings that need fixing though.

Like Rhonda said there's alot of knowledge out there and some huge molehills have been made [:)]
