Jetlag - Oleg(J) vs sveint(A)

Post by sveint »

Standard scenario, no mods. Oleg (Japan) vs sveint (Allies).

The Japanese opening moves are rather surprising: a weak attack on Pearl Harbor and a direct assault on Singapore, covered by at least 2 CVs. Allied planes even landed a bomb in one of the CVs.

Repulse sinks. The KB seems to be hunting for CVs but finds only empty ocean (it's moving southwest, for all I know it's headed back). Landing at Singapore continues, costing the Japanese some escorts and transports.

Japanese CA Takao sinks, apparently it was rather heavily damaged. More troops unload at Singpore. A large air raid sinks the vessels that were too damaged to leave Manila, mostly submarines but also some transports. And the KB searches for CVs that are long gone, all it finds is a lone MSW.

On December 10th! [X(] That's b@llsy of your opponent landing on it directly. I'd be expecting an invasion of India in the next week or two. If I were you I'd start withdrawing form Burma now & preparing a counter-thrust anywhere you think it could cause some trouble.

Anyway, good luck!

This game vs Svein belongs to latest "series" of games, all employing similar basic starting outline. It includes sending reduced KB (4 CV) to execute classic PH strike (OR support Johnston invasion - some call it "CV hunting" I don't [;)]).

Remaining 2 CVs + that small ugly CVL support direct landing on Singapore + Force Z hunt (if possible). 4 divisions + 2 brigades land directly on Singapore (some on day one, some on day two). It's a carnage, but I think well worth it in the Big Picture. I need CV support because if any Allied opponent would decide to use Force Z to *actually FIGHT* (shudders [:D]) it would be even uglier carnage. But no, every Allied opponent I have ever seen decides to RUN. Fine by me, if they run into my CVs even better [8D]

Svein game is the last of several games I started recently, so I don't mind him posting an AAR, because other opponents already went thru this. I must also say Svein game had the *worst* start for me of those games started recently. I lost a CA vs Singapore fortress (my biggest loss in Singapore invasions ever). Svein is also the only one to start running from Malaya up North in vain hope he might escape to Burma. Others decided to make a stand on Malaya after losing Sing.

That's a scary strategy! I'm surprised the worst you've lossed is a CA.

I'd think the allies would have to use Force Z in such a case - losing Singapore that early is disastrous - time to throw in the kitchen sink IMO. That's easy for me to say, however, since I'm not playing you. (Glad I'm not - I think you'd kick my b--- [;)])

Good luck - this looks like it will be interesting.

Oleg better have a good reason to take Singapore that early. So far the balance sheet is not to his advantage, a CA lost, no US BBs sunk, about half the Allied forces in Malaya escaping, and finally no chance at all to sink Allied ships trying to evacute personnel from Singapore.

The only thing I can see that would justify it is an early assault on India, which will not be as easy as I think he has hoped for.

No one, not *one* Allied opponent I have ever seen has used Force Z for anything else but running away like cockroach (and those are oftenly the same people who complain of *UNHISTORIC PLAY* if IJN player ends up two inches away from recorded history on 7th Dec) [;)]

Well of all games I started in this latest "round" Sveint's is both a) worst luck for me so far b) apparently the most active opponent of all. After Singapore attack I sent my mini-KB amid the escape routes for Phillipine shipping, and they just sat there for 2-3 days, never launching one bloody strike, with sea around them practically black with escaping transports - and they didn't even have that damn cloud icon above. This reminded me how much I hate this game and how damn frustrating it can be on selected ocassions.

Well, this war won't be decided by couple transports, but still....

Sveint decided to run up the Malaya isthmus with his units, which I believe is wrong, but more on that later. I have one division in Songkhia to block his way, but he managed to sneak past with 5-6 units without attacking (I didn't even know it could be done).

I'd be expecting that (India invasion) too. I held India once against a July '42 invasion but it seems like it would be extremely difficult or impossible this early. But then you also have a good chunk of the Malaya troops. I'm an AFB so I hope I'm wrong. [:)]

That's surprising to me. I don't doubt you, but I would think at least a few would use Force Z (from what I can tell you've played a gazillion games). Personally I like using Force Z on Dec 8th and with one exception (the entire KB & baby KB in the South China Sea on Dec 7th) I always have.

If he still holds Victoria Point he can march into Songkhia and then re-set the movement orders to Victoria Point.

The only thing I can see that would justify it is an early assault on India, which will not be as easy as I think he has hoped for.

Well it had nothing to do with India initially. My "reason" to make day 1 attack on Sing is this: couple patches ago (I believe it was 1.40?) auto-shock attack when crossing the river was introduced. I opposed this rule *vehemently*, in billion flamey posts on the board. I don't know whether it's because I am stupid, or something, but not only I hated this rule, I also had very bad results even when I knew shock attack is about to happen (I think there is HUGE disruption penalty added when crossing the river, so combined penalties for the attacker are downright murderous). All this made attacking the well defended Sing fortress all but impossible. And I mean - sometimes really impossible. I played a test game vs some guy, my bet was that as Allies I will keep Sing till mid March 42 *easily*. I did that, and it was my impression I could have kept it, like, forever.

As for the auto shock attack rule (which I still hate with passion) altho some people sided with me, finally the group consensus was "shut up already, overcome and adapt". So I did, decided to avoid miserable damn river crossing altogether and devised "Sing day 1" strategy. I never regretted using it ever since, and it's the standard part of my repertoire in every IJN game. As I said, this CA lost vs Svein is my biggest loss so far (in 9-10 openings where I used Sing strategy) - which goes in line with me having exceptionally bad luck vs Svein so far. I hope that'll change though. Still, a CA is small price for having Sing this early. I will be using this strategy for as long as stupid, illogical, hated "auto shock attack + immense disruption" rule is in effect

So, there is no special India strategy behind that, I don't like land war, and I don't like attacking India from "aesthetic" standpoint - it makes for an ugly war (and unhistoric too). I invented this strategy simply to avoid endless miserable campaign involving humliating defeats when crossing the Johore Strait (a "river" [:@][:@][:@]).

Still, capitalising on early fall of Singapore by attacking India is quite obvious so I won't say neither "yes" or "no" to that [;)] We'll see, I think having Singapore this early is an award in itself.

Now, having said all that about Sing, India defence from an Allied standpoint is different issue altogether, nothing to do with Sing.

In my opinion, there are four "pillars" to successful Indian defence for Allies. But more about that later. Lets just say I disagree with Svein's comments "about half the Allied forces in Malaya escaping" and "no chance at all to sink Allied ships trying to evacute personnel from Singapore" [;)]

had this done to me at Nanning. As the Allies I advanced on the city from the rail line leading out of Wuchow. When i entered japanese held Nanning, the japanese, after a few turns, advanced down the same rail line i had just come up towards Japanese held Canton.

not sure how your situation is, but if the bases are as follows....

A----B----C

...and you own only base "B" and enemy troops are coming from base "A", once they enter base "B" they can click on friendly base "C" and start advance towards that base...thereby bypassing your troops at base "B"
