Room for a nursery?

Post by Count dTen2 »

Okay, I bought the game, cranked it up, and went into shock. Been reading the manual and tutorials, and pouring over posts. I'm so confused I can't even re-find the old posts I'm desperately trying re-read. The computer laughs at me whenever I turn away. It locks up at unrepeatable moments, and I can hear the hard disk whispering long after I go to bed. Mornings I find candy wrappers, scribbled notes and half-empty cups leaving rings by the monitor. The computer is playing without me (and doing much better). The AI, at least, is learning.

May I suggest a Beginner's Luck or some such clearly marked forum section where the clueless can post without fear and be nurtured. Mostly so I can find it again...

Gah, I had a big long post with tons of threads linked, then my browser ate it.

What I would suggest is set the forum to show All topics. In the dropdown menu where it says 180 Days, click and select All topics. The forum is about 7-8 pages long, so there is a ton of information.

As a start, I would look at the tutorial threads:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=995092
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1007609

If you still have questions (as I am sure you will), feel free to post on the forum and ask. I or any one of the games fans will be more than happy to answer. We all had to start somewhere, and we are all still learning about the game (and I'm the guy the designed it.... I'm still finding cool stuff about it I didn't know it could do or stuff I put in and forgot :) )

Thank you. Hopefully I'll at least get the forum software figured out soon. [&:]

One of the tutorials you listed I hadn't seen, and I need to reread the others as I learn more.

An old friend of mine on the opposite coast has now bought WPO as well and hopefully we'll keep each other encouraged until we gain some measure of competency.

BTW, when you get near the 1.4 update of the future, please consider some additional French ships. The French nation would have sent some assets, no matter how reluctantly, to protect IndoChina interests. Besides, I love the way the old battleships look as well as the CA's you've already included.

No if I can just get a game to go far enough along to see the CA's in action.....

Don't worry, the entire 1920s French Navy is getting added in, along with the hypothetical Normandie (sans Bearn which is a CV) and Lyon class battleships.

Right-click on a hex and his number will appear on the top menu-bar [;)]

[:)]Thank you for the reply. I have, of course more questions.

For one, why can't I get my land based air to target a nearby taskforce, or even an enemy port facility just two hexes away (within range of the attack squadron)?

Also, since I am trying to experiment instead of playing fair, is there a quick way to halt the play out of a turn? This would allow me to easily repeat the turn and try something different (while I can still remember what I just did).

I've also tried task forces following each other, but in night combat at least, the second task force never seems to take part.

In another case I was landing troops with two taskforces "escorting," but when the enemy ships jumped the task force at night (and went through a couple of rounds of combat) the escorts never took part. [X(] Is speed or leadership a factor?

It's a fascinating game, but very slow-playing on my poor pc.

You can't point the TF as a target, but you can set port (airfield) as a target.

Also, since I am trying to experiment instead of playing fair, is there a quick way to halt the play out of a turn? This would allow me to easily repeat the turn and try something different (while I can still remember what I just did).

No, you can't interrupt resolution phase.

I've also tried task forces following each other, but in night combat at least, the second task force never seems to take part.

There is a die roll, which depends on many factors - TF compositions, leader, enemy TF, enemy leader, weather, experiences, etc.

In another case I was landing troops with two taskforces "escorting," but when the enemy ships jumped the task force at night (and went through a couple of rounds of combat) the escorts never took part. [X(] Is speed or leadership a factor?

The same as above. Yes speed and leadership are important

It's a fascinating game, but very slow-playing on my poor pc.
