First Impresion

Post by Red2112 »

Hi everyone, First of all, I would like to say aim a newbi here and with "wargames" (almost, played "Operation Overload" once with a friend) but I always wanted to try out a wargame again due to the fun I had. I dont rember what I was looking for at the wargamer site when I came across the COTA banner, whent to the site and read all the info about COTA. The first thing that got me was the flexability of the game, the no hex or turn by turn and the pause botton. Next I read Markshot mini-guide and see how it all un-folds, superb! Guess what happend next? I hit the "buy" digital download and off I go [:D]

At first, I was a bit scared due to the fact that most board wargames requier alot of reading=time and understanding of the game (which most times I dont have). The overall impresion I got with COTA and its engine, is a positive one and the fact that I was buying a long term game, learing and playing wise. I wasent sure If the game included a tutorial, but as mentioned before, I had a clue with Markshot´s mini-guide. I must add that Markshot did a wonderful job explaining his sceanrio.

I bought the game yesterday and whent straight to the 1st. tutorial. I must say it was a bit difficult for me, due to the fact that aim new to COTA and had no printed version of the tutorial guide, so I had to write things down as I whent along (nice thing you can minimize the game). To make a long story short, I got tierd of writing things down when I got to the part where you hit the play button and whent for it! I went to sleep at 5am, won the sceanrio and had a woderful time playing!

I would like to say in my humble oppinion, that you guys put up a awsome game, its very well explained (will get a printed version Monday) and a worthy game with many hours of enjoyment. Thank you and good job Panther and Matrix!

The only question I have for now is as follows, how do the multiplayer games go about? (set-up, time, turns etc.) Can some one give me a overall view on how you play online?

Respectfuly,

Mike

Playing online is pretty easy but finding an opponent can be a bit tricky giving timezones - if you're available next Tuesday evening/night this puppy wouldn't mind a quick online game. PM me if you're interested and we'll set it up.

Mike,

There you go! You have your own dedicated tip on the Mini-Guide. See Page 12 towards the bottom, the discussion of bringing down the Elasson Bridge.

Enjoy!

Thank you very much Markshot. Apart from being witty with words and writing, your are of great help (take note Matrix). I spent most of the day yesterday reading this forum, had fun at it and a good time. I can´t reflect what I learn yet, beacuse of all the reading and trying to absorb all the info and game mechanics. I´am sure alot of question will arise (to many now to sort LOL) as like "how do you order to blow the bridge", I tried with the deny order last nigth, but have to give it another try today after reading your recent post. Had other issues in my scenario (tutorial 1 axis side) to worry about, like getting my a** kicked LOL. Having a great time folks, the down side is I think aim gonna have to get some glasses [:D] Thank you for your dedication Sir. very kind of you. Good care now and God bless.

Just to add my tuppence

Just bought COTA. Had bought Airborne Assault: Arnhem some years ago and, must admit, wasn't won over by it; perhaps it was just too radical for me at the time, being an old hex and turn man. But, after reading this forum over the last few days, I thought I'd give COTA a try. And boy, am I glad I did! Having just played the first tutorial I can say it's the most fun I think I've ever had with a new wargame. Quite extraordinary! Well done to all who've contributed to the game and keep it up.

One quick question though; is it possible when issuing orders to specify a time of execution? Ie, to tell the AI commander of a particular battalion or battlegroup to get his men in position and to start up at 0600? Or is it a matter of working around the order delays and calcuating the optimum time to issue orders in order to effect a 0600 kickoff? I've looked through the manuals and can't spot this anywhere - hope I'm not asking a silly / obvious question.

DSwain,

Welcome.

No you can't specify a Start or End time. It's on the wish list though.
