Best game... ever?

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Best game... ever?

Post by dobeln »

After getting some time with GGWaW-AwD, I can rather surely say it is the best computer game I've ever played, in terms of sheer fun, despite the somewhat rough presentation compared to most AAA titles. Perhaps Counterstrike can compare, but that's in a somewhat different genre ;)

Just wanted to give the kudos to Gary and the team ;) Impressive effort!

It's almost the only game I'm playing since I discovered it by december 05 (WAW), now I'm playing its sequel AWD. Strategic command 2 is the other, but AWD is winning by a mile.

I think I´ve logged about 4 hours per day on the game and an additional hour or 2 per day on the Forum since June, this makes for about 600+ hours.  I´ve had the pleasure of completing at least 40 full PBEM games, this is even more time than I spent with A3R.  Yep, it´s a pretty good game. [:(]  The upshot is that it is just as rich, but easier for others to learn as the all-time most awesome board games (so now I actually have opponents!)

I find it hard to compare games of different genres. That said, AWD is an excellent game and among the best I ever played. [:)]

I agree. Been playing SC2 but I think AWD is a better game. Just started playing AWD last week.[:D]

Great game so far.[:'(]

Already started a thread about it at a German forum about strategy games and convinced at least one person to buy it. As soon as I've got the time, I'll tease them with an AAR - unfortunately that might take a little.

While reading these threads and hearing it from GKar, I'm getting more and more convinced that I should buy this game...[:)]

I'm trying to get my group into it...

We all shelled out close to $100 for GMT's 'A WORLD AT WAR' back in 2003... and although I believe that is the ulimate WW2 game out there, alas, we've not even got as far as punching the counters.

I think this is the way forward - so I'm doing my best to draw them into a PBEM game, so that they go and buy copies.

Having now had some pretty serious gametime and one completed PBEM, I stand by my assessment. Best WWII Strategy game ever. Better than Clash of Steel. Possibly best Strategy game ever. Possibly most enjoyable game ever. Thanks Gary! :)

Seeing statements like "best game ever" always makes me wonder.

Either you're prone to risky absolutist statements like me, or you could actually decide what is better, a bowl of fresh fruit, or fine chocolate.

Just to be clear, some absolutes are just not possible :)
I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

Depends on which fruits are in the bowl :P

Seriously though, ranking cross-category is always a fuzzy business, but I don't think doing so is meaningless. I have a fairly good grip on which games I enjoy playing, and GGWaWAwD PBEM just takes the cake right now.  I think part of it is the nature of PBEM though - gameplay is doled out in rationed chunks, so anticipation comes into play in a way that TCP/IP or solitaire play can't match.
