Damaged unit goes destroyed.

Post by Petiloup »

Hi,

In the case a unit is damaged and can run a connection to a factory it goes destroyed (at least I think it's how I did understand it).

If for Ground/Air troops it's quite clear and works pretty well I don't have the same feeling for Naval units.

Usualy the idea would be to send your subs where they can do some damage and maybe interdict some moves in your opponent turn. With the minus 3 if they are alone you could take the risk of sending them piecemeal but one of the result is that when damaged they are simply destroyed.

I would guess it's because they are too far from a port as I can't imagine you need a transport line back to a factory.

Even so subs did move far away (even to the Indian Ocean) from Germany without bases in between so it wouldn't be unrealistic to allow them to survive being damaged even when far away.

Thanks,

Phil.

Ships have to be within 20 MPs of a friendly factory. For subs, its 15.

Yes, Uboats did operate in the Indian Ocean, but not in anywhere near the numbers that can occur in the game. The 15 MP limit helps constrain having mass floods of submarines far from friendly waters.

don't forget, subs will 'dive deep' after being attacked once and will no longer op-fire during that turn. you also have a 2/3rds chance of surface ships failing to engage at all if you are attacked/attack a fleet/cv.

A few changes I like also are the -3 to attack roll when attacking a lone sub ( -2 for two and so on) allows for better survivability without having to mass them. The reduced damage returned to factory range increases the risks for distant operations, a good thing for the game. And op-fire ( the one allowed ) doesn't eat up ammo, so the enemy can no longer run you out of torps.

Ok I got it but in this case my German subs were operating near Hawai and I did control Mexico, Panama, Cuba, Venezuela and so forth but as there are no port in those regions I guess the 15 MP limit was kicking in. This case is extreme but it makes the rule not working well.

Agreed it's no big deal in a game at that stage but can this rule be changed to 15MP from a factory or 15MP to a transport linked to a factory?

I always felt that Panama should be a port.

I'm not actually sure how the rule works. Is it 20/15MPs to a port-factory, or is it 20/15MPs to a port that can trace to a factory? Any idea?

Its the naval range to an area with a working factory that can repair the unit (which means it must be a facotry/port area).
