Pirated Copy Message

Post by rhinobones »

I was troubleshooting a TOAW III scenario in the PBM mode by playing both sides and sending the PBL file to myself for alternate turns. When I open a file sent to myself I get the message “Your Opponent May Be Using A Pirated Copy”.

Hmmmm . . . the copy I have is one of the courtesy copies provided by Matrix.

So the question is do my TOAW III opponents see this message (maybe not since no one has yet mentioned this) or, is this pirate message an anomaly of playing a PBL game against myself or, is this something peculiar to the courtesy copies?

Inquiring minds need to know.

Not to worry. PBEM game files are signed with the serial number of the game installed on the machine that they are played on. If both sides are played by the same numbered game, then the program sends the piracy message. This may, in the future, include those serial numbers that have been pirated and blacklisted.

This is one reason that hotseat games were set to not have variable initiative, so that you can test, or solitaire play scenarios in the same mode that they would play as if PBEM'ing.

Thanks, that’s comforting. Good to know what little reputation I have is still intact.
