AE/AD/AGP/AR/AS/AV/AVD Question

Post by doddleson »

I have looked in the manual but can't determine if these ships have to be in TF's or just anchored to get the benefit. Great game!

Usually disbanded in port, iirc...

I don't believe AE's do either: just docked in a port with supplies in their holds. They gain reloading abilities at sea in 44 IIRC.

Same with all AD, AGP, AR, AS, AV, AVD, and MLE (even though you didn't ask about them).

OK - i had always thought for repair ships to operate, they needed to be disbanded - is this not true?

In order to use SUPPLY functions, the just need to be present at a port and have sufficient supplies (depending on which ship, the size of a port may vary, i.e. - AV can operate from dot bases)... so the question becomes - what do you want them to do?

Yes, if IIRC the manual says that they will work for any port size in one section but in another it says they must be disbanded in that port, hence they can only work in a PT3 or greater

AV and AVD provide support for sea planes (Catalina et al) at ANY port, even port size 0, disbanded or not. Tested and confirmed.

I wished people would not that much speculate when giving answers, or make it clearer they're guessing (mantill, please don't feel offended, not meant to be. Your answer is probably correct in reference to repairing ships but don't know for sure).

if you read Rob's quote I include with my answer you will see it refers specifically to repair ships, not to sea plane tenders

That's why I included my bracketed PS so you would not feel addressed ;)

Best of my knowledge they do not need to be disbanded but, hey, I've been wrong before... [8D]

Sorry - i originally misread the question, and had thought it was asking about repair ships, but of course, it was not. My bad... [:o]

In my experience (and from what i have read on the forums of other people's experiences), REPAIR functions require the ships to be disbanded. As noted, other functions DO NOT require a ship to be disbanded, but depending on what you are trying to accomplish will dictate the size of port. People will often suggest putting ARs in convoys to help damaged ships, but they do not seem to help in saving a ship while they are at sea, nor in port while in a TF (not disbanded.) However, if anyone has shown this to be incorrect, i will be happy to learn otherwise.

i have frequently used dot bases (size zero)to run AVs to fly seaplanes. You need to have supplies there for this, however.

I agree that AR's do not help ships while at sea.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that repairing ships uses supplies too.

Here is a link to a document on Spooky's site. It was created by Kid and Pry. I refered to it a lot in my early days of WITP.

MLEs can be in any TF, as long as they are in a port with "sufficient supplies". There must also be fuel present at the port.

AEs work in a replenishment TF. They must have supplies loaded. Helps to have AOs with fuel present as well.

I believe MLEs have to be in a port - of size 3+ - and have "sufficient supplies". This "sufficient supplies" is has many different amounts and its all called the same. In my experience "Sufficient Supplies" is either 10k or 20k supplies.

MLE's work with less as long as you are not in the red. IIRC they were working for me even with supplies in the orange.

I think maybe in this case "sufficient supplies" means however many supply points it costs to create the mines on the MLs, i.e. not very many.
