Bourbons Vrs. Hapsburgs. The Stuggle for the Throne of Spain

Post by The Almighty Turtle »

Ironically, I came up with this idea while thinking of a almost-completely different topic. I was contemplating on my recent piece about the colonies, and who would support who, and I thought about the many diverse backers of the Revolutionaries (thee were backed universally by England, Napoleonic France, Holland, Sweden (to an Extent) and even the US.) Then I realized one party that did everything it could to try to undermine the revolutionaries that was NOT Spanish. The Austrian Hapsburgs, for the simple fact that they wanted Spain (and Portugal) for itself. This led me to thinking. Since the end of the Spanish War of Succesion, the Hapsburgs lost their throne in Spain but kept the bulk of their power in Austria, but never gave up on reconquering the Iberia. However, The French Bourbons, despite being severed from the chance of uniting the French and Spanish crowns, were not going to let the Hapsburgs walk into Madrid and seize the crown off the heads of their relatives, and Austria's old allies were simply not manifesting support, as the Russians were wary of the Hapsburgs and might have seen in them a potential foe, or a possible conquest. The British were worried about Austrian encroachment in Hanover and (had they taken Spain) Portugal, and they were not eager to return to having an over-powerful Hapsburg family.

However, the French Revolution saw the Bourbon royal branch in France be executed, and if Austria and the Alliance could defeat France there WAS the definitive possibility of Austria re-assimilating the Spanish into the Hapsburg realm, and they could even claim that they were justified as Portugal and Spain both tetered between the French and the Alliance in Sympathy.

Is it possible to add political objectives to the Austrian Political guide to show the Hapsburg intrest in reconquering Spain and Portugal? I believe it would enhance gamplay as it would make whoever is in Madrid a little bit more wary of signing any alliance or right-of-passage act with Vienna... Is This possible?
