FAQ: When is this game coming out?

Post by Gil R. »

Since the question keeps getting asked, often in the form of a new thread, we might as well devote a single thread to the issue of just when "Forge of Freedom" will be released. Any official announcement will come from Matrix when a release date is set, and there currently is none. However, here is where things stand:

The manual has been completed by the WCS team, and I believe that the Matrix team has also finished laying it out (or is on the verge of being done).

The game itself is in hyper-advanced beta-testing. At this point, the game appears to be completely stable, in that the play-testers are reporting no crashes. There are no critical bugs, but a few that affect particular areas of gameplay are being found (e.g., it was discovered that the "Encirclement" siege option wasn't working properly, but this has been fixed). So at this point, the amount of playtesting still needed appears measurable in days rather than weeks.

Once we at WCS are satisfied that the game is ready to go gold we will produce the final build for Matrix to work its magic on (you know, adding serial numbers for security and that sort of thing), and they will then transfer the installation build to the company that distributes the game to those who download it or purchase CD's. I have no idea how long this process takes, though.

As we reach new milestones I'll announce them here.

No, that's still hush-hush.

Well, if you won't tell, then I will. I know, I know I preomised to keep it to myself, but it's bound to leak sooner or later.

You are close Tiger.  I have it on good authority that Gil intends to push hard for the War of Jenkins Ear.

Personally, I'm a little worried that the name Forge of Otolaryngology might not be especially marketable but I suppose they know what they are doing.

One reviewer who wasn't that fond of "Crown of Glory" parodied its name in his review by coming up with the alternate name "Tiara of Fruity." I think our next game should be called "Tiara of Fruity," and since I doubt that the reviewer trademarked the name that wouldn't be impossible. No idea yet on what the game would be about, though.

You realize that when the fight over where the US ended and Canada began in the Northwest was in full bloom there WAS a war over a pig? I believe it might even have been CALLED the Pig War.

Yep, the patience drops once the developers announce they have a stable RC [;)]. However there is more to it to make it a release. One thing is this freaking monster of a manual, jeez I always thought the WITP manual is unbeatable but WCS proofed me wrong [X(]

But one thing I can promise you, this game is worth all the patience you can bring up.

I can wait for them to get it right. Furthermore, I have plenty of work to do until the end of the year at least -- and I work from home, so there's no getting away from it.

I know of a good doctor if you wind up with too many patients and need to pass a few along....

This puzzles me a bit. I'd have expected Matrix just to take the PDF and pass it on to customers, which doesn't seem like hard work. Does Matrix take the source files and rework the manual in some way? Putting it into Matrix house style or something?

Yes, they format it, etc. We give them the text file plus all the screenshots, and Marc, their graphics person, puts it all together.

Wow. So you don't know what it's going to look like until you see the final product.

I've been writing manuals for twenty years, but I've never worked that way. Always I could produce my own drafts at any stage that looked like the final product.
