Supply lines

Post by Valgua »

I've played my first game (italian v. greeks at the beginning of the invasion). The game is really great! Thank you everybody for the advice! [&o] However I don't understand exactly how supply lines work. They are graphically represented as straight lines but are they actually straight? I read that there are virtual trucks moving from the bases to the units, so I suppose that a supply line is open as far as there is a road a truck can use. Do foot path count as well? I'm a bit confused... [&:]

Glad to see that you are enjoying the game.
Supply is generally by truck although you may see manpacks at 50 kilos (phew!). These truck will generally travel by truck routes, i.e. roads. Again, generally they will try to take a low risk route. It's something you don't have to worry about, just place your base near a road and the AI will do the rest. So that players don't have to micro manage, logistics require very little effort by players other than to make sure your bases are out of harms way and protected if required.
I shall be testing you on the manuals later. [;)]

Sorry if something I'm asking is written on the manuals but I had not the time to print them so I'm reading on screen. My main concern is the best way to cut of enemy units. In the game I played
my troops had occupied all the major roads around a cluster of enemy units. The supply line was still good for them and remained that way. On the other hand one on MY units got "red" on supplies. The strange thing is that that unit was a company and the other companies of the battalion had green supplies [&:] I thought than units under a same hq used the same base. Was I wrong?

Filippo,

Welcome. I'm glad you are enjoying COTA.

The straight lines you see from Base to drawing units is purely abstract. The actual supply line follows a supply route that is generated when the supply column is despatched. This is like a normal avoidance route but with a uses a very high caution factor and so gives any known enemy concentrations and their firepower influence a wide berth. They will try to stick to raods but are not restricted to them. We don't display this path, because of the processor load. Instead we use the straight line and colour it to indicate the status - ie open, threatened or cut.

To cut off enemy supply lines you need to surround the enemy such that there is either a friendly unit or its strong firepower influence blocking all possible routes in. Alternatively overrun its base.

Each drawing unit develops its own supply route to the base, so it is quite possible that one company of a battalions four or five could be out of supply while the rest of the battalion is in supply.

Arjuna, is it possible to, just like the normal unit pathfinding, to see the actual supply line? I'm sure the same question came up sometime ago, but can't remember what the answer was.

And how about choosing the supply line with checkpoints and all... ?[:o]

Trigger Happy,

There is a significant hit drawing routes. It can be done but it's the performance hit. It's something we can introduce when machines get a bit faster.

It would be marvelous to see Panther Games' AA engine evolve into a heavily threaded app in the future. The continuous-time game engine this series employs is truly revolutionary, period. I can't help but grin at the possibilities of an already sophisticated AI taking advantage of a quad-core processor.

The more time I spend with COTA, the more impressed I become with what this team has achieved. I'd say the future looks bright for the Panthers, and good for them!

It's already multi-threaded, with one thread used for the UI, one for the AI and up to another four for sound channels.

Thak you for the answer, I think I'm beginning to understand. It is not sufficient to block the main roads, I have to cover with my fire power ALL the accesses, foot paths included. It makes certainly sense. One doubt though: if 4 of 5 companies of a battalion are supplied and one is not do they share in part their supplies? Is this modeled? If not I think you should consider it for future realeases (not a critic at all, the game is indeed wonderful, one of my best investments!). Again, I'm sorry if all this is covered by the manual but reading on screen isn't easy. I'll get it printed as soon as possible.

Sorry, one more question. Is it correct to state that the supplies are transported from SEPs to bases and from bases to units? If I block the line between SEP and base will it have some kind of effect for the enemy?

Third question (ok, I'm anoying.. [;)]). I have a situation where several companies in the same locations all use the same base but only one of them have a red supply line. You've already explained that each unit has its own route to the base, but why is it that way?
Would it not be more realistic if the supply carriers used the same route, exspecially if their specific route is blocked by the enemey? I suppose that i Real Life the thinking goes like this:

1) Oh! No! My route to the unit is blocked!

2) Ok, I'll use the other available routes already used by other carriers. This will perhaps overload the roads a bit, but better that than leaving the unit unsupplied.

Am I wrong? Am I missing something?

Yes. The quantity of supply available at the base's depot will not be re-supplied. The base will have to do with what it has on hands. Sometimes it doesn't really matter as the base have plenty of stock. But in some scenarios (I believe all including para drops) it does matter a lot.

Cheers,

JeF.

Also remember that the state of the supply line is determined when last a request was processed and a supply column despatched or when that supply column either reached the unit or failed to. This could be several hours ago. So even if in the meantime the situation has changed it will show what it was until a new request is processed etc ( eg if fours ago it was cut but now they could get through it will still show "cut". )

I see! Thank you for all the explanations! The game is a masterpiece and I will print the documentation as soon as possible.
