2 "little" enhancements I'd like to see

Post by Cantankerous »

I think that PureSim is an outstanding baseball sim, and I think it works very well as the game stands now, but there are two small enhancements that I think would probably be easy to introduce and could improve management of rosters.

(1) The minor league rosters are already very crowded with information, but it would be nice if you could identify a player as "lefty" or "righty" (whether a hitter or a pitcher) without having to click on his player card. Sometimes you might want to call up a left-handed pitcher from the minors, but if you're like me I have so many to think about I generally forget which minor league players are left-handed or right-handed.

It would nice if some type of color coding could be used to differentiate each player. Right-handers (both hitters and pitchers) could be listed in the standard black color; left-handers could be listed in red; switch-hitters might be listed in blue. This would make it quick and easy to identify these types of players and it wouldn't require yet another column on the already crowded minor league spreadsheet layout.

(2) Sometimes when a player gets hurt (especially a pitcher) but the injury is not so severe as to warrant DL time, I might want to rest him by clicking the "keep this player on the bench" tab on the player usage settings. Unfortunately, as forgetful as I can be, I might sim a week's worth of games and then completely forget that I have designated that player to sit the bench. If I shut the game down for the night, tomorrow it might completely slip my mind that the player in question will not be playing even if he now is completely healed.

Therefore, I would suggest that an asterisk (or some other subtle designation) be placed next to the player's name on the major league roster to denote that this player is currently designated as being kept on the bench. That way forgetful people like me won't end up simming a month's worth of game wondering why a particular player seems to be getting no playing time at all.

Just some suggestions that would make me happy! [:)]

Funny, I was just doing some work tightening up some locked roster / player usage code, so I was able to get a tweak in there that provides a visual cue on the modify roster screen if a player has been locked into a lineup or rotation slot via a player usage setting.

Basically, I just show a little padlock after the player's name.

Here is a screen shot:

Um, Shaun, that's not exactly the bit Cantankerous was posting about. In fact, I agree with him - that possibility has annoyed me enough in the past that I'd stopped using "Keep on the Bench" altogether several versions ago. Your padlock icon is great, and serves one fine purpose (showing locked roster spots), but I think the need to address C's suggestion was greater: showing players who are locked OUT of the game due to "Keep on the Bench" option.

(And apologies if you also added that - the screenie doesn't show it.)
