Heroic Italian militia and unit identities

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Heroic Italian militia and unit identities

Post by Tom Grosv »

I really like the addition of Veteran/Elite status in AWD - makes you quite fond of some of your more heroic units, especially lowly militia managing the difficult task of becoming regular infantry. Unfortunately, the lack of unit identities makes it difficult to impossible to follow the fortunes of those units, especially promoted militia. I suppose it's just too difficult in this game to additionally display identities.

An exception to the above is an Italian militia unit of mine that has just become infantry during my invasion of Turkey. Since it keeps the Italian flag and is the only Italian infantry unit on the map as you can't build them, it should be easy to follow it's fortunes as it joins in Barbarossa via the Caucauses and (probably) expires on the road to Stalingrad. Of course, if it is just damaged, it will (presumably) still exist as an Italian infantry unit.

Then again, it may heroically continue to the road to becoming Elite.................. that's almost a mini-competition - the first player to get an Italian militia unit to Elite infantry status............or has someone already managed this?

Yep, I have, and it's pretty damn cool, once all is said and done though, I agree with thr devs; these units are simply too easy to kill to give them names......what I really likr are TFs that go vet (have not seen any gon  elite after 70+ games...............)

would be nice to see flags for teh Hungarians, Bulgarians etc... as well as Italian fighter sprites instead of the ME-109 etc.

However, this is all chrome, and has no impact on game-play... but I like those sorts of details!

I'd like to see this as well, have every nationality identified. At least as a game option that could be enabled or disabled.

One thing is that _if_ anyone mods the game with different surrender rules (e.g. UK surrenders if England, Scotland and Cairo fall) then all of these nationalities are very important, since they dictacte which troops will evaporate.

The reason (as I understand it) is to limit the size of the pop-up boxes..............
