Read somewhere they planned on using the logo, on helmets ans team colors would have been black silver . So did them up that way .

I remember being all excited when this team was coming about... The CFL actually granted Halifax an expansion franchise (I want to say 1983), and everything was a go, except there wasn't a stadium big enough in Halifax at the time. Still isn't.

If they just could have sorted out the stadium problem, who knows what the league might have been like today.

They could have kept the name and everything, just play somewhere that has a stadium. I forget who did this....but it worked...... Wait a minute..... that was New Orleans last year. Didn't they play in Baton Rouge or somewhere like that (it was LSU's stadium, forget where though...)

So the Halifax team could have played in Montreal or somewhere untill a stadium was built...

There's a guy that sits a row or two infront of me at BC Lions games that has an Atlantic Schooners T-shirt. A bunch of them were made in the early 1980's when everyone thought the team was a sure thing.. now the shirt is a collectors item and everyone asks him where he got it. It has the same logo on it as you're using on your helmets.

Just like the National Football League, the CFL has a territorial limit for their franchises. I believe it's 75 kilometres, but I could be wrong. In the NFL, it's 75 miles.

Last year, the Saints were granted an emergency exception to play elsewhere instead of disbanding and collapsing the franchise or suspending operations, which just wasn't an option. If there isn't a catastrophe or extenuating circumstance which prevents a team from playing within it's territorial limits, teams must play their home games within 75 miles of the city limits of the city they represent (or are based in, in the case of teams that represent a state or states). This has more than just aesthetical values, as in the NFL, if a team sells out a game, that game is the only game that may be broadcast on television within that 75-mile limit at that time. If the game does not sell out, the game is blacked out within that 75-mile limit.

The CFL does not have the same broadcast rules, but the territorial limit rule is just as stringent. If a team is named after one city, and plays somewhere else, it is impossible to get a fan following and sell seasons tickets, which puts you behind the eight-ball from the get-go. While you're expending time, effort and money to pay for an itinerant team without a real home, unless you consider a roll of hundreds pocket change, you can't put together funds to build a stadium. Footnote: of the nine teams in the CFL (including the dormant Ottawa franchise), not one of them own their own building. They play in what's been put together for them by the city, and most of the stadiums are ancient by sports standards.

No, having the Schooners play on the road until a stadium was built would have been a recipe for disaster. Better the team never come to fruition than have it travel the country as a running joke.

Dude, you're a Roughriders fan and a Lions seasons ticket holder?

I've held seasons tickets for the home team in all CFL cities I've lived in. I wear green and white to all the games, regardless of who's playing.

Oh. Okay.

I'd probably do the same and wear Black and Gold to every game I attend... then again, after last season, I'd need a bag over my head to complete the outfit.
