Spain again

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Spain again

Sorry Joel, I did not notice you had already addressed this issue before I wrote this. I am not deleting this post because I'd still like to hear back from the community regarding this. Please delete this thread if it bugs you.

Anonymous:
"what is the deal these days with Spain flipping? I’m playing XXXXXXX (name deleted for privacy) in another game and it flipped in 1940. It’s really getting ridiculous and makes the road very tough for the Allies. I know that some discussion has be made about this on the forum but I wonder if there’s more we can do. From this point forward I think the only sensible Allied approach is to anticipate Spain flipping and plan accordingly, which basically means abandoning the Middle East.(underline added for emphasis by CB)"

and from someone else:

"Going back to the Spain thing, EVERY game I have played since the update has resulted in Spain joing Axis. NO exceptions. (At least 15 games!). I find it interesting that it is not mentioned on the AWD site again......"

Though I ran the AI against AI test 25 times, in PBEM play 7 of 8 games I'm involved in have an active Spain......
I really feel this is a major balance issue and would like to see Lebatron's suggestion (requiring an Axis occuppied Malta/Gibraltar in order to flip) implemented.

Comments?

It's a bug. A late debug change intended to make it happen every time for testing purposes was left in the patch by mistake. This has been fixed and we'll get a patch to Matrix for when they are back in the office after the holidays.

There are two short term solutions.

1) house rules, German player must decline Spain. This is a little unfair since the USA WR will increment regardless.

2) modify the files so that Spain has "already happened", and the event won't fire.

I want to suggest that maybe this would be a good time to do Spain 'right' and not just rush out a patch fix that undoes the test code Gary inadvertently forgot to reset. Take a look at the thread "AWD-The Game that Brings Spain To Life?"
