What starship SciFi series\flicks can those who play starshatter recommend?

Post by Destraex »

Personally I have watched

Battlestargalactica NEW series - like it a lot, but the realism is spoiled by the cornyness of the plot at times. The dark universe is cool but I wish their was more ship variety
Star Trek - watched this but am not the strongest fan.... I like the idealism but it gets on my nerves when it gets really corny. THe ships look good but I kinda phase in and out of liking them for some reason... those engines look like you could shoot them off
Babylon5 - again very bad acting but I enjoyed it especially the movies... the ships in this for the most part look cool and remind me of Nexus TJI. I played I've Found Her for this reason but never really got into it due to the lack of ship variety and old style linear campaign
Star Wars - This used to really be great as a kid but since the new movies I cannot bring myself to enjoy it. PErhaps its just too kiddy. The original ships look cool but the ww2 dogfights annoyed me
Wing Commander - the main characters in this movie were damned annoying but I liked the supporting cast.... ww2 in space again, pinging in space and keeping the volume down in case sound travels in space!!! Ship Special effects in this though imho were amazing for the time. Explosions especially.
Stargate - this is one of the corniest shows around.... don't really like it but its better than other things on TV
Space Above and Beyond - corny acting but good show. Little variety in ships again. Think only one fighter type and two cap ship types seen. This was never finished, i recommend it to anyone who has not seen it.
Strange idea for a unit... sort of like mounted infantry..... surely no organisation can afford to use pilots as marines.
Andromeda - not seen much of this.... seemed corny??
Starship Troopers good fun and awesome looking cap ships... shame the troopers were not wearing power armour as in the books
Aliens Nostromo anyone.... 5 by 5 i'm in the pipe.... aliens is one of my favorite films of all time.

Can't think of anymore at the moment.... there are a lot of sub-varients of the ones mentioned above off course

The only one I'm particularly surprised by is Space Above and beyond. All the others are pretty main stream but there are plenty of less-known sci-fi series that are pretty good. At present I'm watching Charlie Jade ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Jade ) which is a joint south-african / Canadian production and has some "different" filming techniques behind it. Quite liking it.

If you want a REALLY comprehensive list of sci-fi, try: http://www.magicdragon.com/UltimateSF/tv.html - though it's only good up to about 2000.

But off the top of my head I'd recommend Starhunter / starhunter 2300 (second series name), I quite liked it anyway. Also there's Doctor Who, but most non-brits won't have much access to that.
And of course StarShip troopers - not just the movie (which I like), but there is a nifty (computer) animated series too.

You forgot mention book, written by Robert Heinlein 1959.

True, but seeing as we're talking about "series/flicks" here I thought I'd skip mentioning that.

Battlestargalactica NEW series - like it a lot, but the realism is spoiled by the cornyness of the plot at times.

That about sums it up. The style is inspired and the actors try their hardest (mostly) but the whole lot is resting on a plot so utterly ludicrous that the show never quite makes it to 'quality'.
Babylon5 - again very bad acting but I enjoyed it especially the movies... the ships in this for the most part look cool and remind me of Nexus TJI. I played I've Found Her for this reason but never really got into it due to the lack of ship variety and old style linear campaign

Pfff... what bad acting? B5 rocketh in all departments. Well, OK, maybe there was some dodgy thespianism on occasion but I could put up with that just to see Katsulas (RIP) and Jurasik hamming it up in the best possible way. Pure class!
Star Wars - This used to really be great as a kid but since the new movies I cannot bring myself to enjoy it. PErhaps its just too kiddy.

Too kiddy until it stopped, whereupon it started taking itself far too seriously.
Wing Commander - the main characters in this movie were damned annoying but I liked the supporting cast.... ww2 in space again, pinging in space and keeping the volume down in case sound travels in space!!! Ship Special effects in this though imho were amazing for the time. Explosions especially.

Probably the best proof to date that making movies based on video games in a truly lousy idea. At least Tomb Raider had Angelina Jolie in it.
Stargate - this is one of the corniest shows around....

It is indeed. Absolute tripe, in fact, and how it has survived so long is one of TV's greatest mysteries. Should maybe whisper that though, some people around here are fans. Important people..
Can't think of anymore at the moment.... there are a lot of sub-varients of the ones mentioned above off course

Get hold of Firefly and Serenity if you can. Good stuff. Farscape is bearable as well, and watching Claudia Black's vastly superior performance in that gives a pretty good impression of what she thinks of Stargate, too.. [;)]

Nice to see another fan of Nexus:TJP. Easily the best space game of the last few years IMHO, yet pretty much bombed at retail despite good reviews. Pity.

I liked nexus too, but it was over far too quickly and lacked any real replayability.

I don't know - Personally I thought Ka-Dargo was the best of the bunch on Farscape. I wasn't too impressed by CB but then I didn't have any particular interest in that character.

I must agree with your firefly point - it's certainly watching at least once.

Oh, and Personally I quite like Stargate - unlike most sci-fi they don't take themselves too seriously. (just like Farscape actually)

The complete Firefly series and its movie Serenity (which can be considered as a series finale) are quite possibly the very best space-adventure science fiction of all time.  Be absolutely sure you pick up the DVD set and watch them in order.  Fox screwed things up royally by broadcasting the episodes out of order; "The Train Job" (3rd episode) was the episode they premiered with and they completely missed/ignored/censored the first episode, "Serenity", which made a lot of the viewers completely unaware of the intricacies of the plot.  Admittedly, The Train Job was a pretty cool episode, however. ;-)

The new BSG has excellent acting but is going way too far into the unbelievable (a gynoid impregnated by a human? give me a break).  I didn't have Space channel until the start of the second season, either, so I'm going to have to pick it up on DVD to get the full picture (hopefully I'll be able to pick up the pilot movies along with it).

Andromeda is the very worst science-fiction show of all time.  It's perfect if you're a 12-year-old whose voice is cracking (especially because you can ogle Michael Shanks' wife), but otherwise it's nonsense.  Pretty lights and pictures don't make good watching unless you're on LSD, crack, meth, THC, or all four.

I like Stargate SG-1 -- I actually think it does a better job of founding things in realism than other series who just do anything they want, and besides all that it has Macguyver! ;-)  Stargate Atlantis is also good in my opinion, particularly because David Hewlett plays an awesome asshole/geek (rather similar to me, I'm afraid).

Farscape is good if you want something different, but I never got into it -- too strange for my tastes.

Gundam Wing (anime) isn't bad if you can get over the whole Japanese translation synching stuff, where the voice actors try to synch up their English words to the way the Japanese characters are moving their mouths on the screen, which just sounds abhorrent.  You have to watch it from the beginning, though.  Ordinarily I hate anime, but Gundam Wing isn't bad.
Starshatter: The Gathering Storm is brought to you in part by Whoop-Ass -- When the Hegemony gets you down, open up a can of Whoop-Ass! Now with extra chutzpah!

I would have to agree, I have been watching sci-fi since the 60s and this has been my all time fav. As JT said, the missed episodes tell so much of what wasn't known.

Call it campy, cheesy, or just another spaghetti western set in a sci-fi world...I doubt anything will come out anytime soon to rival it.

I did enjoy most of the Stargate series and it's spinoffs. O'Neil and Rodney were my favs for characters, nothing like some sarcastic humor to lighten any life-threating situation.

I was impartial to many of the others, never really got hooked on the anime either. Cowboy Beebop was perhaps one that I might say was entertaining.

Good one!

But did someone say anime? You might try out Planetes. I haven't seen anime version, but manga serie rocks hard!

I'm suprised no one has suggested creating an Honorverse mod. Anyone read the books?

nothing for TGS, but the mod from 4.5 was one of the best there was, it should work ok in 5.0.

Currently there is no hosting location the has been active. Pheagey has a site, but I dont think he is able to do much with it now. here's the link.

Unless somebody starts something from scratch I doubt anything be done with the original.

DamoclesX created the one for the original SS, but he is now a graphics designer for Matrix and likely, is very busy.

Yes I have. This would be a good vehicle to make a Mod for Weber's creation. But its not film,so we should probably discuss it in another thread. Though few enough pass through here to notice.

Thanks for the site link! I'm going to download the two B5 fleet files i found there and see whats avaliable.I would actually be motivated to try and make a B5 Mod.

Can you create new systems and rename systems and planets? Is there an overall Galactic map?

For something quick and dirty,(how quick would depend),can you swap ships out of the existing game and replace with different models?

galaxies can also be created, just like ships. I have a version of the Sol system created a couple of years ago.

use the Starmod tool to crack the dat and see what's there, it should give you a start.

I have a latest B5 mod out, (HTL), which is actually 2 years old...if anybody would like it then send me an email and I can set it up for you to collect at yousendit.com

this has been done prior to the Starmod tool, but now it should be quite easy.

Good! it would be a nice way to inject some life back into this forum section. Seemed there was a long lull in the active posting in this section. Is the increase all due to GS and the 5.01 patch being released? Or are many of you running an older version of the game?

The activity has increased since the release of 5.01, mostly new players though. Off the top of my head I would have to say there are about 10 people that were from the old regime active here currently...posting that is.

Others may be stopping in to see what is getting posted...but who's to know for sure.

As far as old players with the new release...hard telling, not knowing. I currently have both installed and I still use both simply because many of the mods from 4.5 dont work as well in 5.01.

I still work in 4.5 myself, recently I created a new TOS mission using TurgotZ's mod for 4.5. The TOS mod does work in TGS, but the textures tend to do weird stuff once and a while. I transposed the mission over to 5.01 as well, but I have found some things get confused with the transfer.

Me? I'm old timer and knew game when newest available version was 3.7.6 (a long time ago). I tried even modding, but gave it up becouse AI couldn't handle short range combat: too much zig-zag and too little shooting. I used to play Starshatter 4.5 from time to time, but right now my joystick has worn out and I'm not going buy another one soon becouse I have got fed up by game and want play some other games + buy some more Classic BattleTech stuff. I just need find someone to play it which seems to be as hard as finding BattleTech novels [:(]
