Probably the saddest example of a memorable USN ship deserving of museum status going to breakers while other less worthy and historically significant ships get preserved, many even redundant examples like Alabama/Massachusetts, the multiple Essexes and the 2-3 Iowas. Oh well, who was to know that there was no missile gap in the 1950s or ever and that we really did not require tens of thousands of nuclear warhaeds, eh?[8|] The massive scrapping of mothballed veteran warships in '58 and '59 as a result was truly unfortunate historically.

Yeah, pretty sad and short sighted (from an historical perspective).
Of all the ships I wish they would have preserved for museum status - Big E, Saratoga, and San Francisco would have been my wish. (of course all of those are gone).

I totally concur.  It damn near broke Bill Halsey's heart to see Enterprise go to the breakers.  Big B--I agree about those ships you listed.  Wouldn't be great to be able to see those vessels?  Oh, well...

I'd put the Goeben in that list. Don't know offhand what it was known as in the Turkish navy.

I agree with you Hawker and anarchyintheuk,
When I read back in the 70s she was being scrapped I was amazaed and quietly outraged that no one thought to save her - a perfect WWI German BC.... like they grow on trees...

You can still get a chance to see the Saratoga, not just above the waves. One of my co-workers just did the trip. He flew out to Guam and they charter dive trips now up to Bikini Atoll National Historical Park. He said it was more expensive then take a trip out to Pearl and diving on the Utah and Arizonia. According to the park rangers there the radiation is down to below what you would get from natural sources, so it is safe. Link to the service he use, http://www.bikiniatoll.com/divetour.html

Hmm..The same nonchalance and lack of concern for history as the decision to conclude Agent Orange was not a catalyst for other health problems?

I agree with above poster that Bikini Atoll is (was) a true museum to the same late great ships.[:(]
