Stealing Home

Post by KG Erwin »

For you in-game managers, have you ever tried it? While I'm a terror at taking advantage of poorly-armed catchers, I tend to stick with stealing second. I seldom try to steal third, and have never tried to steal home.

To me, this seems to be the ultimate "showboating" play. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I just can't see a reason to try, unless the conditions offer a reasonable chance of success.

As a daily simmer like yourself, I can honestly say that Yes- I have stolen home. However... I have very strict guidelines on when I do this. For example, in my fictional association, there's only one guy I try with, Jet Brody (Spd 95). He's in his 2nd year with the team and his stealing home record is 2-8. I've always tried it when we have a good lead, as it IS a showboating play.

I couldn't live with myself if that was a game-winning/losing decision, I had him try and he was thrown out. I shudder to think.

This thread got me thinking....back in the early 80's, "Whitey Ball" was big in St. Louis. Believe it was 1982 one of the Cards pennant winning seasons, when Herzog had Glenn Brummer steal home to win a game.

Brummer was a back-up catcher that played in the BIG's maybe 3-4 seasons if that. Cards had David Green at the plate I believe, not sure though. Here comes Brummer down the line and it was such a SHOCK it worked, Cards won the game.

Strange but true!

Stealing home used to be pretty easy...then at some point Shaun tightened it up and made it much more difficult. Back when it was easy, I had a player with 96 speed steal home about 30 times in a single season (he stole something like 148 bases that year). I haven't tried much since the change, and when I do, the runner is thrown out every time.
