help with an out of memory error please?

Post by kevwalsh »

Hi,

I would be very grateful for some help with a bug.

I select a ship's aircraft, then click on an individual squadron, I get a game message saying OUT OF MEMORY. Can anybody suggest some help with this one?

Many thanks,

Kevin

Yes, it means your're out of memory. ;)
Basically, you have two choices:

a) ignore it. you can probably change the air squad options by just manually entering the shortcut key after you get that error, M to change mission, and I forget what the other option in that menu is.

b) you can try to free more base memory for the game by eliminating any unnecessary loads from your autoexec.bat and config.sys.
Search for out of memory on this message board to get some more detailed suggestions.

In my case, I always get that error when running the game in a DOS box, but I have enough memory when running it in MSDOS mode.

Hello,

I obeserve jus the same error - the strange thing is, it also happens in dos.

'freeing more base memory is one thing, but with current up to date video and sound boards, it is hard to get to the +580 base ram the game needs, and other suggestions in solving this problem?

Also, i have a lot of problems starting the game in dos. i get a black screen and the pc locks up (after the introdcution - just before the scenario selection screen)

The only thing that works for me is adding "REM" in front of each line in the config.sys file.

If you are running W98+ this will probably not hurt any other applications you run, unless you are running other old dos programs in a dos only environment.

Just use any text editor - edit.exe or even notepad - and add "rem" in front of each line in your config.sys file. If you run into problems with other games or programs you can always change it back.

I get an error message when booting my machine that my sound card driver is not loading, but this only affects my dos-only environment. This dose not affect programs running in a windows 98+ environment as far as I can tell.

Everyones PC is different, OS can also
matter, with win95OSRB which I run, my base DOSbox free memory is 609K free

It could be your autoexec.bat and config.sys
is not loding some drivers Into High memory, often the default autoexec/config.sys that get setup by dos-dumb techs isn't optimized for DOS, those with the know how of DOS from 80's know how to tweak it.

Posting your autoexec and config.sys might allow some of use to make suggestions.
