Good Guys vs Bad Guys

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Good Guys vs Bad Guys

Post by KG Erwin »

Is there such a thing in SPWaW? We don't deal with the larger strategic/geopolitical issues. This is simply a test of wills between common soldiers and their combat leadership against an enemy.

I've thought about this a lot, and I have my sentimental favorites, but when it gets down to it, all we have are our troops and a mission to accomplish.

Yeah, the Gunny wears his loyalty on his sleeve, but that doesn't mean that any of the other fighting men are good or bad.

It's an old cliche -- "Theirs is not to question why. Theirs is just to do or die".

Erwin, why do you struggle with this? [&:]
There is no "ideology" in SPWAW...it doesn't matter what the "socio-political factors" are between the various nations; anyone who has even briefly studied the history of WWII knows who the "good guys" are and who the "bad guys" are. Besides, those terms are subjective, depending on whose viewpoint you are "looking through". For example, the USMC is the "bad guy" when seen through the eyes of the Japanese soldier defending his homeland. [;)]

Forget about the "cosmic influences" and "startegic deliberations" and all that other *crap*, and play the game for what it is...a combat simulation focused on WWII. [8D]

Kevin, that's exactly what I was trying to say in my original post.

Glenn,

Does that mean you've reconsidered and are willing to play KG Kruger in a Cataclysm Campaign?

Glenn,

No. I'll still insist on playing with a reasonably "historic" force, i.e., not with a Finnish core of ski troops and Sissi guerrillas, nor a completely mechanized German force in 1939. That's fantasy. Sorry.

What if you and I design a core together for Kamfgruppe Erwin for a Cataclysm Campaign?

If we can come with a core that is satisfactory as a reasonable compromise to both of us, then will you play a Cataclysm Campaign as Kampfgruppe Erwin?

UndercoverNotChickenSalad,

I think the point of this thread is that taking the "moral high ground" is problematic, to say the least.

There are good guys and bad guys in every army. There is no such thing as a good army or bad army or whatever. There is the same ratio of good to bad people in every army as there is in any group of people just like the members of this forum for example.

Bad people look like this:

Good people, like me for example, look like this:

You should all read,"The end of war" by David L. Robbins,, gives an excellent depiction of just this type of morale delema, and how some things that happen during war can start out with a very cloudy interpretation,,,and end up working themselves out with the influence of other occurances in the same war, that shock or educate u back into civil ethecal morale return of mindset. a long but really good read.RT

You almost had to think about it when you sent that cardboard platoon of trucks down a road to their doom, just to slow the enemy advance.

Now it's just a click of the mouse.
