How effective is the AI, even into v1.8?

Post by stljeffbb »

Hello everyone....I've owned this game pretty much since it came out, but it was just too huge for me to tackle....I played the be-jeezus out of Grigsby's original Pacific War, and I did a little modding of WitP adding a Kikka and G3N, but anyway, how is the AI in this game? I remember reading on these boards (it looks like all posts before August 2006 are now gone) that China was still too easy to take over (a problem I see in most WWII grand strategy games like Hearts of Iron II, etc.)....is this AI formindable? Does it handle unorthodox strategies well or at all? Thanks for any replies.

AI does not handles unorthodox strategies well at all.  It is not bad for Japanese expansion period.  That is about all.  Maybe a little on the defensive for the Japanese in the late war if you do not pull really out of the ballpark stuff - ie stick to historical and it does maybe OK.

Other thing I am experimenting with is changing the VP values of different locations to make the AI defend certain positions more strongly or direct its attack.  The AI logic seems to be to set target bases to attack or defend and then make some judgement on outlying bases and their importance relative to the main objective base (either offensive or defensive).  This is an ongoing test - not sure how well it is working yet.

Hey Donnie, that's a terrific concept [8D], keep us informed on what you discover..

Agreed on all thoughts.  I will keep you posted on the VP changes.  Of course, when playing the AI, one cannot then play for victory by victory points, but, I don't think any of us do that anyway.

AI - I'm not sure anything can stop it from doing some incredibly dense stuff - especially when it comes to excessive fragmenting of land units and tiny unescorted convoys.  Also, it will never do anything super slick like sending a small carrier group to interdict your supply lines between San Fran and Pearl late in the war.

Allied AI is very dumb. It cannot handle complex amphibious operations needed in later war very well. IJN AI does better job during expansion in 41-42, but is easy to "derail" if playing "unhistorically/unrealistically" against it.

Jeff,

As I'm a PBEM outcast I play against the AI. It accepts abuse far better than a real opponent.

As mentioned, it plays a good game up to 1943 as Japan, I have less experience playing against the Allied AI but it did Ok for the first 6 mths.

If you keep to the script its good, Betties & Zero's still rule the Air & Sea.  If you get too smart, you'll find the AI dfeneding points despite your attacks in other areas.

The AI for Japan has some defensive surprises..I played a CHS mod into approx 10/44, and had 3 different Allied carrier groups cruising off the Japanese mainland,(including one just off Korea.).The one off Korea was hit by approx 200 bombers/fighters and transport/Kamikazes the AI had been hording on the mainland...It did not alter where the outcome was going to be, but as in real life, it was not going to give me the victory for free..
