online play problems

Post by Mehring »

Was playing H2H the other day and found the following-
My opponent was unable to host as I could not find their IP. When I hosted it worked fine in the opening screen. In the game screen, however, while I could see my opponent's messages, he could not see mine, only heard an sfx when I posted. My opponent has a router as well as firewall. I just have zonealarm. Any ideas what's causing this?

Mehring,

Welcome.

First off. If you are trying to host from behind a router you must open the correct port for the game to communicate ( ie you let the router know that it is OK to let through comms using the specified port. The router by default denies all comms unless it knows to let them through.

As to how you open the port, well each router is different but the general principle is the same. Go to the section entitled Firewalls, Internet Connection Sharing and Port Forwading on page 18 of the Reference Manual for detailed instructions.

Also note that Zone Alarms doesn't allow you to open a specific port but it does allow you to grant access to specified program. This is covered in that section of the Ref manual.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for advice. I granted zonealarm all the permissions so I suspect it's my opponent's router. I'll refer him to your post. Looking forward to continuing the battle with a bit of chat :)

Yes it's great fun playing online with another human opponent and sending a nice little "Surprise" message just before your tanks roll over the hill into his flank. [:)]

I got the message ;)

I will try to fiddle around with my router until next time. Some chat would really liven up the game, and take my mind away from all those brave NZ soldiers lying wounded all over the place, praying for that their commander gets his act together [8|]

Fat lady hasn't sung yet. We can always swap sides for the next one anyway
