Christian Gets Spanked (or How to Lose a game!)

Post by christian brown »

Here is an AAR of shame (yep, I can already tell how this one is going to turn out, only the end date is in question.)
I (Axis) am playing Avatar47 (Allied) in this game and after some fairly routine moves had an upset:

Greece flips at the worst possible moment, Barbarossa was supposed to kick off this turn! After attempting to retake it with all the MILs, air/sea power (and an art brought in amphib style) this fails with a 51 % chance.

Partly due to overconfidece and partly to this autohit, Southern Italy is successfully invaded.  Now I have a 2nd front in the Med!

That's all I have for now, I just attacked Russia (even though there are 15+ WA units on the Continent) and my bid to take Kharkov failed. Japan is not doing all that well, I mismanaged supply and am now unready for major takeover ops, perhaps in 2 turns things will be prepared reasonably well....I hope I have that much time before the WR counter ticks too far...

Interestingly, Hitler wanted to invade Russia in Spring of 41. He delayed the attack so as to deal with Greece so that he didn't have to worry about them going over to the Brits and opening a southern front against him (and threatening the Rumanian oil fields with bombers). Ideally, Italy was going to deal with Greece but couldnt even get out of Albania. Hitler felt it was better to handle the problem quickly rather than let it fester.

Its amusing how the same situation can crop up in the game.

Looking at your situation, if you can trap and kill those units you might be able to stall it out to at least a draw. But losing the Italians that early is probably going to hurt quite a bit.

Amusing indeed. So amusing in fact, I won't be getting to round 2, lol.

Lesson learned: Do take Greece before launching an invasion vs the Soviet Union.

Wi42, things not looking good for the Germans. Although the Germans took Belorussia this turn, they took it with heavy casualties. On the USSRs turn, we manage counter-attack in Kiev with forces from Kharkov. I managed to barely get the Combined Arms bonus, which was good, because casualties were heavy:

End of turn screenshot. Germany has 1 Fighter in play, 7 damaged, against 25 Ussr+WAllies. A german army of 8 pz and 4 inf was surrounded in Belorussia, hopefully my encirclement will hold, as they only have 1 supply. I placed Fighters all around to prevent the 2 ger HBs delivering supplies to these beleaguered troops.... Stalin will be pleased, as his carefully planned winter counter-attack went so well...

The Allies have 5 bombers within range of germany, where it is especially vulnerable to bombing missions of the 2 HBs+1 TB air fleets in S Italy. Bomber Command targeted Luftwaffe bases all along the interior of Central Europe, damaging 2xHB... reinforcements were moved to India as well to prepare against Japan. As well, the majority of the RN was moved into defensive and offensive postions through the Indian ocean. The Americans completed their first 2 ACs in SW USA. To thwart any daring Japanese aggression against San Francisco, 4 Fighter units were built previously as a measure of defense. Only the most calculated Japanese attack will have a chance to put the USA on defensive in the Pacific.... China is strong as well, and had taken Kwangton 2 turns ago. Russia also moved many excess troops into Irkutsk to prevent being blind-sided by the 14 japanese units in Manchuria...

And there you have it, how quickly things can come apart!  The loss of Kiev was clearly a possibility (hence the HBs and fighters standing by at the end of my turn, it would appear that all my fighter escorts have been destroyed and that the pocket will remain isolated, yikes!  Japan is still muddling around getting ready, I may have enough time before the US' DoW to get everything fully in place.  Avatar's daring use of both the WA field army and China have been refreshingly devastating....A feather in my cap if I last until 1945 at this point (and 3 feathers for Avatar who has thus far played almost flawlessly!)  Have to wait until I get home to measure the true magnitude of these reverses.....hopefully the WA commitment in Southern Eurrope will have weakened him somewhat in Asia (but I doubt it!)
