Accuracy at 2000 yards

Post by robot »

Has anyone found out that your 81 mortars lose accrucy after 2000 yards. And the rounds hit all over the place around this distance. Prior to this range they seem to hit more often right in the 50 yard hex. Makes me want to have a mobile ammo carrier. So that I can move them closer to the front line and maintain there deadly accrucy. I have been using the static bomb dump and have been unable to move forward as our front lines advance. Are the ammo carriers as fast as a bomb dump in maintaining full load outs. The 40 50 and 60mm morters I try and make sure they never fire over 250 yards so as to keep them at peak killing ranges. Does anyone else find this to be true as far as maintaining good ranges for your morters and getting the best bang for the buck.

I usually forgive the computer with that tendancy of inaccuracy because the games randomness of weather sellection doesn't give any wind velosities,,, a thunderstorm,or bright clear day gives no bearing on what the upper level gusts might be,hence some windage is sort of assured.

Robot -- it seems to me that the caliber of the mortar vis a vis its effectiveness is pretty obvious. My Marine 60mm are right there , one hex behind the front line. At 100-200 yards they are killers. The 81mm are not much further behind. Keep the range under 1000 yards and you're gonna get a few kills. Counterbattery and deep suppression is the job of the 105 and 155 mm off-board artillery.

Once in a while, I'll a buy a couple of 75mm pack howitzers as on-board support. That's what they were meant for. They can fire direct or indirect, dependent upon the tactical situation.

Remember this about Marine doctrine -- there is never too much supporting firepower to soften up the enemy -- the infantry's job is to neutralize the surviving enemy . It sounds so simple, but that is seldom how it worked in practice.

IIRC, Mortars were meant (in WWII at least) to be an uplcose fast support weapon for the main line of infantry. I keep all mortars as close as possible to the line, using terrain for concealment and smoke when that's not available. I treat them like I do my riflemen, 500 yards max.

For on-board support, I've started buying a few 75mm pack howitzers. They don't belong in the core force, BUT, what I'm doing is placing two 75s right beside my two 81mm mortar sections -- that's eight tubes for close-support of the rifle companies. Historically acceptable, and in-battle life-savers.

As for ranges, yeah, within 1000 yards they are deadly.

For my company light 60mm mortars, 150-200 yards are the max effective range. Stack killers.

In infantry fights, you rapidly discover why dispersion is essential.
