I am wondering if the alphabetical priority used for same rank generals in containers could be contributing to an error that has occurred a few times whereby a more junior commander is named instead of the senior officer present on the scouting/terrain options screens. Examples are Carter (2 star) in a force of two corps commanded by Longstreet and Hood (each 3 star) and Hill (3 star) for the ANV commanded by Johnston (4 star).

I could be wrong, but I recall Eric saying that this is not a bug - that any container commander can possibly "win" the scouting check and thus contribute to victory for his side, but it's far more likely for the highest rank commanders. So that would mean that the highest ranks failed, but a lower rank stepped up.

Interesting. I suppose its replicating those real life situations where a subordinate not the supremo initiates action or chooses what to hold.

Yes, rank multiplies the rating, but a subordinate with a higher rating can be the one who makes the initiative check.
