AAR Multiplayer: Power Sweep

Post by Anonymous »

The fourth scenario we played was "Power Sweep". This one is not shipped with ANW; it was designed by Dave Steinmeyer. It is a small sub vs. sub scenario, nevertheless it is really a great one in my opinion.

My friend played Nato; I the Soviet side. It was an uneven, unfair match though. While he knew the three other scens from Harpoon 2 and 3, he had never played anything like Power Sweep. I, on the other side, had learnt it the hard way.

My tactics - built on experience - were simple, mean, and, yes, "unrealistisc": I let my three subs creep along with 2 or 3 knots, splitting them up over the whole map. By going below normal creep speed of 5 knots my subs compensated that two-sided disadvantage: being too loud and too deaf at the same time. I think now the match was even concerning the double noise problem. What remained was my 3:2 advantage and my nasty long range weapons.

His first sub - the British SSN - was detected doing 14 knots. I quickly fired a SSN-15 Starfish and the missile dropped its torp just above his head. "Boom"!

Then he became more cautious. His diesel sub crept too and I hardly got any contact. It had to be in the East because my subs controlled the West. Thus I swept East with my Charlie; the Tango trailing. When I got a weak signal I fired another SSN-15. It did miss him, but he went on full speed in order to evade.

That was what I had been waiting for.

Two more missilies, one a nuke, finished him off. [:D]

"The Queen was not amused". The next scen surely will be another US CVBG (he will play that side of course) vs. Soviet CVBG plus land base (it will be me again).

Well, he learnt that there are other scens and other problems in naval warfare than killing inferior Soviet assets. [;)]

This was our first ANW LAN session; more to follow!
