5.01 slowdown!!!

Post by KDiggity »

Hey all,

Hopefully a problem you can help me with. I'm running SPWAW 5.01, a great game of course. Nary a problem. Now, randomly, it has slowed down to an annoying level. On the menu screens the mouse pointer becomes jerky, and during battles the projectiles, explosions and gun 'sparks' all look like they're taking place in slow motion compared to before. I've been running 5.01 for some time now, and it's only just happened. Also, I haven't done anything to my computer that I can think of to trigger this. I've tried getting rid of all the background programs, with no luck... Any ideas????

DO you have norton utilities installed? There is a particularly nasty piece of that that seemingly at random to thrash my disk and casue me those very same symptons. I have stopped the Norton Monitor thint (withthe red and green stoplight) and this thing STILL takes up 99% of my system resources for 5 or 10 min at a crack..for a short while i thought it was a trojon horse of something...but no just this screwy Norton thingy going off on its own to bring my machine to its knees

Nope, not Norton. I don't have it. (At least that I know of :) ) Thanks for the quick reply, though. That's what I love about these forums ya got here! Anyways, it's the damndest thing. None of my other games are experiencing a slowdown. I may just redownload it and reinstall it if necessary. On my DSL it'll take a coupla' hours, but oh well!! Well worth it!

Kieran

Thanks again for the quick response!

It must be your machine, Kieran. I run SPWaW on 32megs, and since getting 5.01 it's performance has improved remarkably. It runs alot faster than v4.5 ever did.

Try running a defrag and making sure you have at least 300megs free on your hard drive.

It really is bizarre. I fixed it by going into msconfig and shutting down all the startup programs. It worked, although I haven't pinpointed the exact problem. I'm running
a K2 450 w/ a voodoo3 and 256m RAM, so there shouldn't be a problem. Oh well, it's 'fixed' for now! :-)

Thanks for the feedback,

Kieran

I too am having problems with the mouse slowdown after updating to 5.01. I don't have Norton and there are no programs running in the background.I have a Gig Athlon with 256 Meg ram,and about 8 Gigs hard drive space left.
I also had to download the 60M video "patch".I also had to add spwaw.exe to my Program, which was no big deal.
Except for the mouse slowdown it runs fine.
