Sounds and Visuals

Post by KG Erwin »

Have you ever played out the SPWaW snd folder just to hear the astonishing variety of aural (no , not oral [:D]) stimulations that this warhorse provides? I'm doing that now.

Then there's going through the photos in the encyclopedia. Damn. Some of the modders did a hell of a lot of research to come up with these.

Even as a regular player, I don't often get to experience the whole gamut of what the game has to offer.

Back to the sound -- to me, this is the one thing that makes the game so immersive. Just to hear those wicked flamethrower SFX, rocket artillery, a mine suddenly going up, the sound of a bolt-action rifle, or even better, that awesome M1 Garand is enough to take you there.

I know, Alby. I've made some choices that, in-game, didn't work out. A prime example is the BAR. The Enhanced version just didn't do it for me, so I went back to the original SPR sound. It's a subjective thing, but the options exist, and that's good. To me, the BAR was the prime squad automatic weapon for my Marines throughout the war, so it needs to sound "authoritative".

As for Preregine Falcon's new arty/bomb explosion sounds, I explained it to you, but for the general population, here's my review:

The Enhanced sounds for arty/bomb explosions are in your face, as if the stuff is coming down on your head. PF's version is more subtle: the sound is as if you are looking through your binoculars and watching the rounds fall in the distance. Personally, I prefer this perspective.

That's the beautiful thing, though -- the player has a multitude of options, and once familiar with the game routines, can customize it to his or her liking.
