Japs Assault in China 7/10/40

10 July 1940
China
0400 Hours

We have been pulled out of Russia and transported to the Chinese mainland. We have been given the honor of assaulting the defenses of the Chinese nationalists. They are well dug in and are ready to defend against us. This is going to be a very tough battle as we have to cut our way thru a very heavy minefield line. Each company has been givin 3 platoons of Engineers to help them plus they will have at least 6 flame tanks to try and cut thru as fast as possible for the rest of the troops to get thru.

We are to begin our assault at 0400 hours. This will be preceded by a heavy bombardment of the suspected mine field and surrounding area to try and soften up some of there front line strength.

A will move along a road to get to the mine field as soon as possible in the center. They have been given the honor of moving up the middle and taking the objective there. C company will be on there right to take the northern objective. And B is far to the south taking the objective there.

Each company will have at least 2 or three platoons of tanks on there right and left flanks. They will move up and try to shield the companys from small and heavy fire from the enemy. They will move as close to the mine field as possible and lay down covering fire.

Our big guns have already begun to lay down fire on the suspected mine field as I type this report. It is very reassuring to hear the deep bass rumbling as they begin there fire. It is a beautiful day as we begin this battle the weather is clear and visability is around 700 yards. This will help us but also allow the enemy to see us coming from way off. Will have the morters lay in some smoke as we get closer to the mines. This should help us a lot and give our Engineers time towork the mines.

0415 Hours

Our men began there advance at 0400 hours. We are moving well as can be expected. They have begun to drop some 75mm shells in amongst some of the Engineers. The lead elements of all three companys have moved to within 50 yards of the begining of the minefields. Most of the tanks are in position and waiting for the Engineers to begin there work. The tanks on the left flank of A have already engaged some of the enemy. We lost a light tank already to a hiddin IG bunker. Still have not located it at this time. Have called down some 150 morter fire on the suspected location.

The men I have with me are not the green troops I went into Russia with. The core is made up of Vets and Elite troops with no green troops anymore at all. I have told the troops following the Engineers to slow down on there march forward so as to give them time to open up a lane thru the mines. I dont want the gongestion we had in Russia when we lost so many men as they tried to move thru. Other then the IG which no one seems to be able to locate most of the fire coming our way has been small arm fire. No losses other then the one tank to report. The tanks have engaged several LMG sections and sent them packing along with at least 2 squads of infantry.

Our support guns are going to have along day im sure. So I have begun to ration the time that the companys can be using them. Instead of having 6 batterys to call on they will only have three at a time. This should increase the total amount of time we will be able to call on them. Also cut down on the amount of morters they can call down from the company to 3 batterys at a time as we do not have any ammo dumps for this fight.

Will let you know how this works out as sometime it seems we never have enough artty at our disposal. We know we have along and very diffacult battle before us. But we will win out and I know a lot of our brave men will not be with us after this battle. But this is something we know and yet these men will continue to do there job and do it well.

For the emporer and the glory of Japan. Banzai!! Banzai!! Banzai!!!

0505 Hours

Took us 55 minutes to break thru the minefield. C in the north were the first thru and are advancing on the north objectives. Even after all the heavy bombardments I laid down there still seems to be a heck of alot of Chinese we are running into there. Our flame tanks are working overtime trying to clear some kind of a whole thru them to the objectives. They have alone taken out at least 15 squads of the enemy including at least 10 LMG sections along the way. The lead elements of the Engineers have moved to with in 400 yards of the flags. One of the flames was put out of action by a die hard Chinese squad a few minutes ago. He still managed to take out the squad along with another LMG.

B meanwhile in the south have gotten thru and lead elements are within 500 yards of the flags there. Our Engineers are in the lead after clearing a path thru I sent them towards the north flank. Have been recieving a lot of small arm fire from a small hill on there right flank. So sent the Engineers towards that hill to clear it. The main body is to proceed to the south objective and secure it before turning NE towards the rear objective.

A in the center has been hampered by alot of artty dropping on them. Due to this they just now broke thru and will be moving very soon. Have sent there Engineers slightly NE towards a large IG bunker they are to take it out so our tanks can begin to move forward along with the infantry.

Things are going along fairly well so far. We have no losses other then 2 tanks being shut down from long range fire from this bunker. We have lost at least 50 men to the constant artty fire from the enemy. This battle is not over by along shot and we are sure to lose some more men. They have not given up by no means even tho we are inflicting heavy losses to them. At this time we have not seen any armor from there side. A flame tank took out a log bunker five minutes ago from a hundred yards. Although the visability is at least 700 yards most of the fighting is being done from only 100 yards or less. The smoke laying over the battle field really shuts down the visability. You have to be within 100 yards to make out the enemy as he is using every bit of cover he can find.

0600

Two hours we have been going at it and the Chinese show no signs of giving up. B in the south has moved all the way to the rear and has captured the rear south objectives. Have moved my tanks are at least a good part of them to there right flank. They are moving to the rear in between A CO in the center and B company in the south. Good thing I did as they came close to the center and the south objectives several enemy tanks began to show up. Have run into at least 3 88mm ATG which we took out with no losses. Also have spotted and eliminated at least 4 37mm ATG.

A in the center have run into a lot of MG and log bunkers as they approach the center objective. Have taken out 3 heavy IG bunkers on the way. And am in the process of knocking out two more. The center objectives have 5 log bunkers one on each flank and two in the center with a fifth sitting south about 100 yards as a flanker.

Its tough to flank these bunkers as you move right or left to flank they have another one sitting there to cut you to pieces. Still a hell of a lot of Chinese milling around and giving us trouble. Compounding the issue is al my morters and off board artty has run out of ammo. I can no longer call for help from them to move forward.

Another problem that has cropped up over the last five minutes is our flame tanks are beginning to run out of ammo as well. The flames that we have has been wrecking havoc on the enemy. They have accounted for at least 130 units thats near 1300 kills for them. We figure with the arty and all the other units taking out the enmey. Our body count has to be up some where near 3000 kills during this battle.

Several tanks have been knocked out of commision so far but we managed to save all the crews. At least 4 flame tanks have been taken out as well but no loss to crew. Outside of the artty bombardments we have had to endure we are doing very well. I guess close to 200 men have been killed from our side. All in all our men are performing there duties very well today. I am extremely proud of them.

Took a little over 2 hours to beat them but beat them we did. They lost almost 3000 men 2763 to be exact. Plus we found and blowed 43 of those dam pesky artty to hell and back. Did not see much in the way of armor but found five of them and sent them along with the artty to the same place. 254 brave men went with them from our side. Plus we lost 15 of our tanks most of them to heavy IG bunkers.

The hills today were full of bunkers. We took out 22 bunkers plus we counted 17 we never even got to. Around the center there was at least 11 of them. In one 300 by 300 yard area alone there was 9 of them plus two 76.2 guns amongst them. We were able to get the 2 guns plus take out 5 of the bunkers. But we lost 2 tanks there as it was hard to make out where exactly the guns were located due to all the smoke and fire from our flame tanks.

We have been told we are to stay here in China until next year as an occupation force. There will be leave and such but mostly we are to police the Cinese for a few months. Word has come down from home we are to recieve a unit citation for our work in Russia and here. All the men are elated about the news and im sure the Saki will flow freely tonight. Our unit begins to grow in Veterans and elite troops. Soon there will be no force that can beat us in battle.
