strange airplanes upgrade path ?

Post by crocodile »

I sew by the database editor that Ki-32 Mary (dive bomber) is updated as Ki-48 Lily (level bomber), and finaly Ki-48 Lily is updated as Ki-102a Randy (fighter bomber).
Is it an error in the database (campain 15 - the War in the Pacific Campain) or an historical strange path ?

There's been lots of talk about this. All three plane types equipped IJAAF light Sentais during the war, so it's meant to be that way, i.e. not a DB error. The path isn't that strange: the Luftwaffe had units equipped with Ju-87's which later transitioned to Fw-190's (dive bomber to fighter bomber)...

dive bomber to fighter bomber : Ok
I was surprised by the level bomber in the path, that is not exactly the same mission.

But, if it's historical...

The Ki-48 was a very, very light bomber...[;)]

I also question whether the Mary was in fact a "dive" bomber. Afterall it had an internal fuselage bomb-bay..and it was refered to as the Army Type 98 Single-engined "Light" Bomber

The Helldiver had an internal fuselage bomb bay as well... But the Mary is probably more correctly called an "Army Co-operation Aircraft", like the Fairey Battle, and about as effective...
