Campaign Reinforcements or...

Post by Windo von Paene »

So I'm playing WWII campaign as the russians. I'm in the third mission, (my first assult mission). Now I read somewhere that there is the chance that the computer player will get reinforcements on occassion when playing a campaign. Which leads me to this: What are the general numbers of reinforcements the CPU is likely to get?

AS I said, this is an assult. Two clumps of VH near the center of the map near the fron lines, with one way south near the bottom. As things develop, it appears that the CPU is sandbagged all along a line in front of the two VH clumps, with some more north of a large hill right near the top of the map. The southern VH clump appears to be non-defended. I've got about 10 squads of Engineers, rifle and Guard Inf heading towards the south clump, with a scout ahead of them. No enemies spotted.

Right before they are about to come over a hill directly to the east of this clump of VHs,(somewhere around turn 10), what do I see
but about 5 Halftracks rolling up into the woods directly to the west of the VH. These are all fully loaded with a mixture of SS, Rifle and even one MMG. In other parts of the map I see 4 or 5 more HT's rolling up, also fully loaded with Inf and another MMG.

So the question is, were these "campaign reinforcements"? Or were these most likely simply being held back out of my LOS until the CPU decided where it needed them? Because frankly, this was a hell of a lot of troops to be rolling in as reinforcements.

As an aside - Damn those halftracks are kilers! All of the squads in the southern assult have been eliminated except for 1 lone engineer. Of course we toasted all of the halftracks! Gotta love it when your one lone remaining man is hiding in the woods, biding his time, waiting for the last halftrack to come just a little too close....FLAME ON! Boom!

I've not seen reinforcements in about 12 campaign games. I have seen the AIP hold back forces as you have mentioned.

Yes, those halftracks are killers but think about it. They have fixed mount so the barrell doesn't rise if you hold the stock firmly. They have loads of ammo (more onboard than a foot mobile team could carry) so they can use longer bursts. The firers are directly spotting their targets unlike on a tank where you are looking through a vision block or small vision port. Its so easy to hose down moving troops.

OK, maybe just a bit faded.

Well it certainly seemed to me that that was an awful lot of "reinforcements" if that was what they were. I have to agree that it was the AIP holding back. Although how they knew to go the the southern VH clump I don't know, as I had no SPOTTED units in the area. And the battle wasn't going particularly well for the Germans in other parts of the map...
