Problem in Win ME

Post by Jimmywax »

I spent about a week downloading this damn program and now that I have it, it will not work. It will load up, but when I try to start the game, the movie and the game freeze up. Will SPWaW not work under ME? Do I need to uninstall it and go back to Win 98? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

The only known issue with ME is the megacampaign with C&C on. Others have it working. Be aware most lockups are sound card issues. Be sure to have the most up to date drivers for that and check dxdiag for it's suggestions.
thanks, John.

dxdiag.exe is in the directx directory, it is the diagnostic program for directx. If you run it, it can tell you what drivers are having problems with directx. It also checks a few other things and it also has links to other system utilities.

The first thing I do when loading a new driver or new version of directx is run this to find potential problems.
thanks, John.

Note the the issue with C2 on in the MegaCampaign is a WIN NT/2K - not WIN ME. Win ME right now is actually the preferred platform for SP:WaW (at least until Win XP comes out - highly recommended)

Sorry for the misinformation in my post. Though I thought from what I have read XP will be the platform of choice for viruses and worms due to the way it will handle the tcpip stack. Distributed denial of Service attacks from XP systems are the nightmare of the future, unless every one of them runs behind a firewall they have the potential to clog the internet to the point of stopping.

Hello, I have Win ME and it works fine. What I did was make a shortcut direct to the mech.exe file, and also make sure you are running at least direct x 6!

O.K. thanks for that but I am still having problems. After I ran DXDIAG, it said that i81xdw9x.drv was uncertified and that I should check the manufacturer.

Also, I have an icon for 'Intel Graphics Technology'in my control panel. It doesn't work though and it tells me that the driver for it is not working or unavailible. Has anyone else had this problem?

P.S. I found out last night that several other games have started freezing up too, along with 'ZCast' which is my internet program. Sometimes it freezes up and somtimes it doesn't. <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

P.S.S. I have DirectX 8

So it sounds like you have an Intel 3d chipset (I would guess your video adapter is built into motherboard) good luck, I have seen lots of problems with the Intel chipsets with 3d games, and in this case with a 2d game.

Directx 8 has no problems with SPWAW (I run dx8 with Win98se).

I just checked Intel's site and for the i810 and i815 the newest driver is v6.4
http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_Desc.asp?ProductID=178&DwnldID=2987

You might try that if you indeed are supposed to be using the i810 driver.

Though at least they are still in business, my poor voodoo3 3000 is now unsupported since 3dfx went belly up.

I do however have a stable driver that was directx7 certified that still works for dx8.
thanks, John.

Thanks for your guys' help. I got it whipped though. After I posted last, I remembered the update driver wizard in System properties. I downloaded a new driver from the windows library and now everything is peachy. I forgot to mention that last week my desktop was wiped out by a virus. All the game problems happened after I had to recover and reinstall Win ME.

P.S. I didn't know 3DFX went kaput, I was looking at a Voodoo 3 today and I was thinking of buying it. Good thing I didn't. <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
