Help with installing Bman's mod files

Post by jclauder »

Does anyone know how to install Bman's mod files? The instructions with it say to unpack system.xxx in the data directory. Thats not a zip file. Unpack it with what? how? When I replaced it with a blank file the game would not start and locked up my computer.

I would really like to use the mods to get more of the original capabilities of the UFO game but I think too many people that post about modding assume everybody knows about it. I have never done it. What is the exact procedure?

Thanks

That link didn't help. Part of the procedure talks about xbig.exe. I have no idea what that is. Its suppose be run on the console but when I try I just get a error saying it doesn't exist. What is xbig? What is it suppose to do? how do I get it? How do I run it?

I got the mods features installed I think but I don't see anyway to alter settings. I saw on previous posts that there should be on the settings screen switches for some things. I don't see them. The game is still operating the same way. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here's a copy of a post I made on the devs forum:(you might want to back up the data folder first). download xbig.exe and the empty xbig from this post:http://www.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1576

1)place xbig.exe in the data directory.
2)create a new txt file in the data directory.name it "Xbig.bat" or something but it must end in .bat
3)right click on it and click on edit.notepad should open.
4)copy and paste (without the quotes): "xbig.exe e system.xbg " (or you can replace system with whatever xbg file you want to open)
5)close notepad. It will ask you to save, say yes.
6)run the batch file.
7)rename the empty xbig file to system.xbg (or whatever you've just extracted) and replace it.
Then follow Bman's instructions.

Shouldn't there be an easier way to install a mod then that...like a regular patch?

I think when someone works on a project a while, things obvious to them are not so clear to morons like me [:o]

I can't get it to work. I got the files but the instructions from different ppl contradict. I don't know how to run a batch file from console, and other such things that are so obvious to everyone else [:o]

Can yall just make this a patch soon and make an installer?

Ima have to call Mr Obvious an see if we can get this figured out. I aint makin the connection.

These instructions worked flawlessly for me. Thank you so much, Plodder!

I followed Plodder's instructions as well and it seemed to work for me. The only thing I'm not getting though, is the menu to change the options. Any help?

Thanks that plodder's directions work.  Its a starting point.  Here's where I'm having a problem.

1)place xbig.exe in the data directory.

So I dl the xbigzip and unzip it into data directory.  I think I got that.

6)run the batch file.

How do I do this?  I double click the notepad.bat file I made.  It just opens.  [:o]

"7)rename the empty xbig file to system.xbg (or whatever you've just extracted) and replace it."

Whatever I just extracted?  I think I'm trying to extract a thing that messes w/ the exe and makes mods then work [:o]

The batch file you need to run is included in the same zip you got xbig.exe from.

How do I run a batch.  Double click it?

rename the empty xbig file to system.xbg (or whatever you've just extracted) and replace it.

Where is the empty xbig file?

I believe the problem you are having with the batch file is that you have windows set to hide extensions for known file types. So what's going on is you have a file that is actually named whatever.bat.txt but the '.txt' is hidden from view. Thus, when you double click on it, it's opening a simple text file, rather than running a batch file. You need to either unset the option to hide known file types, or you need to open the text file, choose 'save as', and then name it "filename.bat" the quotes are important here, actually put them in the 'save as' name box. Filename can be whatever, I chose xbig myself, but it doesn't really matter.

The empty xbig file is one of the two things you needed to download from that other thread.

Its alive.  Thanks guys.

Showing the extensions helped.

The batch file was kicking my butt.  I think it was xbig.bat.txt [8|]

I have no idea. On mine, it's right there on the main menu. In addition to load game, save game, settings and so on there's an option for Bman's usability settings (or something to that effect).
