Off to GREECE on Thursday...

Post by Ron Saueracker »

I'll chat with you soon. I'm thinking of starting a blog from the bridge of the armoured cruiser GEORGIOS AVEROFF a few miles away at Piraeus. Being a constant pain in the arse critic...what better place than form a Greek museum warship?[8D] All bluster...no clusters...[;)]

As soon as I get sorted I'll start posting interesting military history pics. Being in the heart of the Med...anyone have any specific requests for military history tours? I'd be more that glad to oblige.

Had the opportunity to go to Greece back in 2004.  You'll get to walk in places you never dreamed of seeing.  Have fun.  It's wonderful.

A Jewish gentleman once said that the difference between the Parthenon and the Coliseum was that the Parthenon represented the font of human intellectual achievement; the Coliseum is where they fed you Christians to lions for entertainment.

I know it ain't a good thing on the passport, but if you can get over to the Turkish coast and see the wonders of ancient Ionian Greece, you will be impressed (oh gosh, if you can get to Lesbos, Miletus, and Rhodes). After Athens, Sparta, Thebes and Corinth, go to Crete (Knossos), Mycenae (close to Tyrins/Argos), and (if the Turks allow) the digs at Troy.

I envy you. All my best.

Ron, you lucky guy!

Let me also wish you best of luck, and assure you - Oh, how I wish I were going with you!

Greece, the cradle of Western Civilization, has so much to offer. As others have said - Thermopolye, Athens, Sparta, Platea!
(Not to mention Greek wines!)

Make sure you have your copies of Homer, Xenophon, Thucydides, Aeschylus, and Herodotus packed up!

Best of luck old man,
Brian

Ron, since you offered, if you ever get the chance - I would love to see some "Battlefield Today" photos of Thermopolye... the pass the Persians took over the mountains (guarded by the Phocians as I recall), the "Last Stand" position on the hillock the Spartans took after Leonidas's death, the Hot Gates, as well as the Platea Battlefield, and the Battlefield at Marathon in SW Attica.
I know time has moved the shorelines out since ancient times, but it would be fascinating to see today.

Also, if you ever get over to NE Turkey, it would be cool to see what the archiologists have uncovered at Troy. (and I want you to bring me back an "1150 BC Achilles Victory Tour" T-Shirt from Troy!...LOL Hey, in exchange I'll let you borrow my Panhead to go out to biker bars and pick up chicks if you come out to So.Cal.[:D])

All the best,
Brian

Well, bought a laptop and a digital camera. Now I can actually do what I promised and post some pics when I return to Greece next month. I'll be in Crete most of the time on business...lots of militarily significant spots there.
