Graphics refresh...

Post by treespider »

Question for you computer minded folks -

I can currently run Witp fine on a restart of my PC with no problems...however when I exit out of the WitP program and restart the game without restarting the PC the graphics within the game seem to not want to refresh at certain points...I may see the remains of an A2A battle window in the bottom menu bar or text that will not refresh and just gets "written" over unit info screens apper without their backgrounds etc...

I assume these problems are caused by a memory problem somewhere...and I think it is being caused by my the firewall and virus package by Norton running in the background as it started shortly after install...Currently operating XP with 2.5 Gigs of Ram...

Any suggestions...restarting the PC each time I want to play is a pain...but not a showstopper...

I suppose your anti-virus and such could be the culprit; they normally don't like to play nice with other programs.

Here's a thought: have you considered playing WitP in windowed mode (using the extension -w)? I had graphics artifacts on many occasions before I made the switch, but they're long gone.

2.5 Gigs of RAM should be plenty, but it's true that you never know with anti-virus software.  Some AV programs have a "throttle" setting where you can control the % of CPU time it is allowed to use.  With that being said, I have 2 Gig of RAM on my laptop, and it has lots of firewall/AV stuff running on it, since it's a work laptop.  I've been running WitP in windowed mode with no issues.  I'm a big fan of it.

Create a shortcut and in the properties, make the Target string look like:

Code: Select all

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific\War in the Pacific.exe" -w
Mine looks like:

Code: Select all

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific\War in the Pacific.exe" -w -altFont -deepcolor
Delete the trackerdb.* files.
Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

I run in windowed mode and sometimes get a similar problem when the game has been running too long (and after a lot of "Hibernate"s on the PC). The map goes loopy and icons and hex sides appear all over the place.
I restart the game and it seems to fix the problem.
Delete the trackerdb.* files.
Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

I get the same weird graphics - icons everywhere when I minimize my windowed mode WitP and change resolution to view something else. I usually run at 1920 x 1200, but when starting WitP I change to 1152 x 864. but I change back to 1920 x 1200 to use Excel and then when I change back and open WitP I sometimes get strange things. But they go away with a game restart. I think WitP doesn't redraw the entire screen and things get left in video memory.

Well, if you try running a replay without rebooting, you are asking for a replay bug... you can usually just enter orders without a problem without a reboot.

However: WINDOWS and WITP don't seem to clean out the memory very well without a reboot which may be aggravated by other programs. Norton is rather notorious for insinuating itself everywhere in the system and can hog resources.

If you turn off the Norton (temporarily) - does the problem persist? i don't know if this will solve the problem, but it might. (You'd have to disconnect from the internet to make sure you don't get a virus).

I think you are missing some art files. Are you using one of the mods? If so, reinstall the art files.

You need to get rid of this iun6002.exe - it can record keystrokes, which means someone potentially has access to anything you do on your computer, including access to any financial accounts you have, passwords, the works. [X(]

Try getting rid of the spyware and see if that helps.

It appears your machine is infected somehow... you shouldn't get the file unless it has somehow infected the installation program, or is otherwise hidden on your machine... where do you get the WITP files installation from?

tonedog, i had the SAME exact trouble you have .
Here is my thread, it's a bit down the tech support list.
tm.asp?m=1833565&mpage=2&#1839332
Only way i fixed it was to do a complete wipe of my hard drive and re-install windows.
It drove me batty trying to figure out what caused it.
Good luck.[8D]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?
